1. A, B, C, D and E play a game of cards. A says to B, "If you give me three cards, you will have as many as E has and if I give you three cards, you will have as many as D has." A and B together have 10 cards more than what D and E together have. If B has two cards more than what C has and the total number of cards be 133, how many cards does B have ?

Clearly, we have :

B-3 = E ...(i)

B + 3 = D ...(ii)

A+B = D + E+10 ...(iii)

B = C + 2 ...(iv)

A+B + C + D + E= 133 ...(v)

From (i) and (ii), we have : 2 B = D + E ...(vi)

From (iii) and (vi), we have : A = B + 10 ...(vii)

Using (iv), (vi) and (vii) in (v), we get:

(B + 10) + B + (B - 2) + 2B = 133 5B = 125 B = 25.

2. The total of the ages of Amar, Akbar and Anthony is 80 years. What was the total of their ages three years ago ?

Required sum = (80 - 3 x 3) years = (80 - 9) years = 71 years.

3. In a group of 15 people, 7 read French, 8 read English while 3 of them read none of these two. How many of them read French and English both ?

5. A is three times as old as B. C was twice-as old as A four years ago. In four years' time, A will be 31. What are the present ages of B and C ?

A = 3B --- (i)

Also, A + 4 = 31
or A = 31-4 = 27

Putting A = 27 in (i) we get
B = 9

6. In a caravan, in addition to 50 hens, there are 45 goats and 8 camels with some keepers. If the total number of feet be 224 more than the number of heads in the caravan, the number of keepers is

18. Reena is twice as old as Sunita. Three years ago, she was three times as old as Sunita. How old is Reena now ?

Let Sunita's present age = x years

Three years ago
(2x-3) = 3(x-3)
2x - 3 = 3x - 9
or x = 6

Reena age = 2x = 2*6 = 12 year.

19. A, B, C and D play a game of cards. A says to B. "If I give you 8 cards, you will have as many as C has and I shall have 3 less than what C has. Also if I take 8 cards from C, I shall have twice as many as D has." If B and D together have 50 cards, how many cards have A got?

If we read given question carefully, we get,
B+8 = C ---(i)
A-8 = C-3 ---(ii)
A+6 = 2D ---(iii)
B+D = 50 ---(iv)

Putting C = A -5 from (ii) into (i), we have :
B+8 = A-5 or A-B = 13 ---(v)

Putting D = 50-B from (iv) and (iii), we have :

A+6 = 100-2B or A+2B = 94 ---(vi)

Solving (v) and (vi), we get
B = 27 and A = 40

20. In a chess tournament each of six players will play every other player exactly once. How many matches will be played during the tournament ?
