A senior Samajwadi Party leader and a cabinet Minister in the present Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh died on Tuesday after failing to recover from a brain haemorrhage.
Kailash Yadav, MLA from the Jangipur constituency in Ghazipur, passed away at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. He suffered a paralysis attack while he was sitting in the lawn of his residence when he fainted. He was rushed to the Medanta Hospital in an air-ambulance.
Mr. Yadav held the Panchayati Raj portfolio in the Akhilesh cabinet.
Born in 1951 in a village in East UP’s Ghazipur district, Mr. Yadav started his political career from a rural background, holding the post of a gram pradhan, before becoming a member of the UP Legislative Assembly on three occasions. He was a Minister of State for Revenue and Industrial Development under the Mulayam Singh regime 2003-07 and was considered close to the supremo.
The leader enjoyed much clout in East UP and his death would be a setback for the SP.
Expressing deep shock at Mr. Yadav’s demise, SP supremo Mulayam Singh said it was a personal loss for him. “His contribution to the Socialist movement was immense,” the party said in a statement. CM Akhilesh Yadav offered his condolences to the leader’s family. The government has lost an “industrious minister” and the party a “committed worker,” Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.
