Centre moves to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare inaugurated a one day National Symposium on 30 October. The theme of the symposium is United to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis.

Call to Action to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by 2021

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized a one day National Symposium on 30 October. The theme of the symposium is United to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis. The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare. He signed the Call to Action to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by 2021.

Highlights:

The symposium discussed that planning, commitment, vision, societal involvement, and past experiences would help the country to achieve the goal to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis from the country by 2021. It was suggested that all health partners and stakeholders across India should actively work on cross-sector collaboration because to tackle NTDs. India has planned to scale-up the use of Triple Drug Therapy, known as IDA, in a phased manner. It will start from November 2019. All the state governments, Union Territories (UTs), and partners will ensure a high level of compliance with these drugs by communities living in endemic districts.

Centre's move:

India is committed to eliminating two of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), namely Lymphatic Filariasis (Hathipaon) and Visceral Leishmaniases (Kala-Azar). These two diseases put the future of our children at high risk.

Lymphatic Filariasis:

Lymphatic filariasis is considered globally as a neglected tropical disease. It is a parasitic disease caused by microscopic, thread-like worms. The adult worms live only in the human lymph system. The lymph system maintains the body's fluid balance and fights infections. The disease is spread from person to person by mosquitoes. The infected people suffer from lymphedema, elephantiasis, and swelling of the scrotum in men called hydrocele.
