What is an Aadhar Card or Unique Identification Number or UIN?

Many countries across the world has adapted the Unique Identity System and provided its citizens with an unique identity number, which holds number of information pertaining to the card holder’s identity. Likewise, Indian Government has also come up with the issuance of National Identity Card i.e. Adhaar Card or Unique Identification Number (UID) for each of its citizens in the view of providing targeted services, ensure national security, and other multiple uses. Adhaar Card is issued under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. It aims at providing subsidies, benefits, and services to individuals residing in India by issuing Unique Identity Number. Aadhar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued to every individual resident of India by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under Aadhaar Act, 2016. UID/Aadhar holds the biometric and demographic information of an individual.

What are the Information Available in Adhaar Card?

The main purpose of introducing Aadhar card is for the unique identity card across the nation and for availing services many organisations and processes requires the Aadhar card as proof of identity. Aadhar card is requested as proof because there are number of information related to an individual which are well verified by the UIDAI and no chances of fraudulent can be done. Is Aadhar Card Mandatory or Not? 

Adhaar card serves as yet another proof of identity and an unique national identity card. But to note, it does not replace or work as an alternate in place of driving license, Voter ID, PAN, etc. Holding an Adhaar Card is voluntary but has become mandatory in order to avail number of subsidies and schemes linked with it. There are number of schemes and subsidies by government sectors, banks, and many other institutions where holding an Aadhar card is mandatory in order to avail the benefits provided by the respective institutions. We have given the readers a list on some of the schemes and subsidies where Aadhar is Mandatory.

  • For availing LPG and Kerosene subsidy benefits, linking of Aadhar to these services are mandatory as you will not receive the subsidy to your bank account if your Aadhar is not linked.
  • For those specific group of workers who are seeking Housing subsidy, Aadhar card is mandatory under Integrated Housing Scheme in order to avail higher housing subsidy.
  • It is mandatory to link Aadhar with Supplementary Nutrition Program under Integrated Child Development Services Scheme to avail the subsidies given.
  • For the farmers to avail Crop Insurance benefits and other eligible people to avail cash subsidy and subsidised food grains, it is mandatory to link Aadhar card 
  • There are certain benefits given by Soil Health Card Scheme and Soil Health Management Scheme and to continue enjoying these benefits, Aadhar card linking is mandatory.
  • Pregnant women are eligible for cash assistance from the government under Janani Suraksha Yojana and in order to avail this subsidy it is mandatory to link Aadhar card of the pregnant woman.
  • Under National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW), linking Aadhar is mandatory for financial support provided under this scheme.
  • Under National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, it is mandatory for the students to link their Aadhar number in order to avail central scholarship and financial support provided.

Who Can Apply for Aadhar Card and the Eligibility Criteria? 

Aadhar card is the unified identity across the Nation and any Indian resident irrespective of gender, religion, occupation, or any categories can apply for UID or Aadhar. Aadhar card is not a proof of citizenship or a replacement of driving license or PAN card or Voter ID, etc. It is an Unique ID where 

  • Every individual residing in India, NRIs, and foreigners residing in India can apply. For registration of children it is divided into two types as given below.
  • Children below 5 years of age - enrolment is done and the Aadhar is linked to the parent’s Aadhar. No biometric is needed and just the photograph of the child is sufficient. Aadhar for a child will not issued if the parent doesn’t have the Aadhar Card.
  • For child above 5 years, both biometric and photograph is taken and a school ID is required. 
  • Biometric update for child enrolled for Aadhar card should be updated when the the child turns 5 years and 15 years.

Eligibility

  • Any Indian citizen residing in India
  • Non-resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Foreigners who are residing in India 
  • Children below 3 years of age need to apply but need not give biometric information.
  • For children below 5 years biometric data will not be captured, but a child has to update the biometric data once he/she turns 5 and another update at the age of 15.
     

What is Aadhar Enrolment Process and Enrolment ID?

Like any other identification cards, there are certain standard steps to get an Aadhar card. Before you could start with the enrolment procedure, make sure you have Proof of Address and Proof of Identity in hand.

  • The first thing that you have to do is locate the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre that is authorised by the UIDAI. Check - Aadhar Enrolment Center for your locality
  • Application for Aadhar Enrolment is available both Offline and Online.
    • In Offline mode, enrolment form can be got from the authorized Aadhar enrolment center, filled in and submitted. 
    • In Online mode, application is available in the official site. Download the Application, Fill in and Submit the filled in Form in the enrolment center - Application Form Online 
  • Once the Application is accepted, demographic and biographic data of the applicant is collected at the enrolment center.
  • On completion of the enrolment, an acknowledgement enrolment number/enrolment ID is given for each applicant. Keep the enrolment number safe until you receive the Aadhar Card.
  • In the backend process, UIDAI then checks and authenticates the information provided by the applicant and issues the Adhaar Card.

Once the Aadhar card is generated, the Aadhar card download can be immediately done and the applicant need not wait until he/she receives the physical Aadhar card through the Indian postal service. Check the various download methods from Aadhar Card Download.
Enrolment ID is the combination of the 14-digit enrolment number and the 14-digit date and time of enrolment. This 28-digit number will be required to check the Aadhaar card status and should be kept safe till the applicant receives the Aadhar. Applicants can retrieve the enrolment ID only if they had provided their mobile numbers during the enrolment process earlier.

Aadhar Card related Updations and Corrections

When a proof is being given by the government there will be different reasons where a person will need to make updates with respect to change in address, name, or biometric, etc and in case the information furnished are not printed correctly in the Aadhar issued one can apply for corrections. So UIDAI has provided different modes to make updates and corrections as mentioned below.

  • An Aadhar Enrolment Centre (or)
  • Through Online (or)
  • Through Post

Who is the Aadhar Card Issuing Authority?

Under the Aadhaar Act 2016, UIDAI is responsible for entire Aadhar enrolment and related services. Right from application form, enrolment, authenticating the information given by the applicant, developing the policies related to Aadhar, UIDAI takes up the entire process. Every Indian resident is entitled to obtain an Aadhaar number by submitting his/her demographic information and biometric information by undergoing the process of enrolment. What is an mAadhar?

UIDAI has officially launched an mobile app for Aadhar Number holders and named it as mAadhar. Aadhar Number holder can carry around their digital copy of their Aadhar via the mobile app i.e., mAadhar and is now accepted as proof of identity to enter airports across the nation and for train journeys in reserved class. The main advantage of mAadhar app will be that the cardholder need not carry physical document all the time.
