After parting ways with the Marlins in October 2022, Mattingly was not expecting to work in the upcoming season and instead planned to spend time with his 8-year-old son. However, he was presented with a new opportunity when the Toronto Blue Jays offered him the role of bench coach. Despite receiving other offers, Mattingly was particularly drawn to the chance to work alongside Toronto's manager, John Schneider, with whom he shares a strong relationship. Mattingly brings a wealth of experience to the Blue Jays, having had a successful career as a player with the New York Yankees, winning multiple awards and accolades, and leading the Dodgers to several winning seasons during his tenure as manager.

This marks a step back for Mattingly, who has spent the past 12 seasons as a manager. He was previously the skipper of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011-2015, during which time he won the NL West three times but was let go after being eliminated in the NLDS in back-to-back seasons. He then became the manager of the Miami Marlins and led them to a playoff appearance in 2020, earning Manager of the Year honors.
