New Update on 25-01-2023: IELTS Syllabus 2023 - There are several IELTS exam variants. The two most common subtypes are IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. Candidates must approach IELTS preparation with the syllabus and test format in mind. The Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections of the IELTS exam will all be required in 2023. The listening and reading components of the IELTS syllabus 2023, IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic, will remain unchanged. However, the test topics for the speaking and listening sections will be different. The IELTS is designed to assess a candidate's command of the English language in academic, professional, and social settings. IELTS scores are expressed on a unique 9-band scale.

What is the IELTS Syllabus 2023?

The syllabus for IELTS covers all the different test sections. All four sections are covered in the syllabus. IELTS Academic and IELTS General training have the same speaking and listening parts, only the reading and writing syllabus varies. The general syllabus is mentioned below.

• Listening: It has conversations and monologues which the candidates are allowed to listen to once. After that, they have to answer questions related to the conversation/monologue that they heard and do so in a limited time.

• Reading: In the reading section, passages are given that may include charts/diagrams. Candidates have to carefully study the passages and diagrams and answer related questions.

• Writing: This section comprises two writing tasks. One task has a word limit of 150 words and the other has a limit of 250 words.

• Speaking: In this, candidates

• have to sit in a face-to-face interview. They have to answer questions, speak on something they know about and have structured discussions.

Highlights of IELTS Syllabus 2023

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which is used by students and other people for migrating to different countries or join in universities of different countries. IELTS is used to test the English listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills of an individual. Students are analysed based on their scores in each English test in the IELTS exam. IELTS test can be taken in any one mode namely computer or paper mode. Some of the highlighted information related to the IELTS exam and pattern are provided in the table below.

Section-wise Information of IELTS Syllabus 2023

IELTS exam is conducted for all the people who wish to work in foreign countries, people who wish to settle in foreign countries as well as the students. So the IELTS exams are conducted differently for academic and general. Students and people who migrate due to work-related purposes will have to opt for the academic and others will have to choose the general. But for both general and academic, listening and the speaking part will be the same. Only the IELTS Reading and Writing test varies for general and academic training.

Information on IELTS Listening Test

IELTS listening test is conducted to test the listening and understanding ability of the students as the accent may differ in different countries. The listening test in IELTS exam is conducted for 30 minutes in which students will have to answer 40 questions. There are four sections in the IELTS listening test and they are listed below.

• Section A-A conversation between two persons in a general context. (mostly telephonic conversation)

• Section B - A speech

• Section C - A group discussion

• Section D - Some subject-oriented lecture

Few formats in which the listening test questions are asked are given below.

• Multiple-choice questions

Students should provide mostly short and to the point answers for these questions asked in the listening tests. Elaborate answers are not required.

Information on IELTS Reading Test

IELTS reading test is conducted with different topics for academic and general students. In the reading test, there are about 40 questions that are to be answered within 60 minutes. The questions may be either multiple-choice or fill-ups or to be searched for any numeric detail or year. Any comprehension of paragraphs is given from any book or journal or newspaper and is mostly upon general topics. The different types of questions that are asked in the IELTS reading test are listed below.

Information on IELTS Writing Test

IELTS writing test has two tasks for both general and academic sections. The method of writing is the same for both general and academic students but the questions differ. Both tasks are to be completed within one hour. Some important points related to each task are listed below.

Academic Writing:

Task 1:

• Students who had opted for academic writing would have to write an essay for not more than 150 words.

• The question would have a chart or table or graph or diagram. It should be clearly depicted in words.

• The essay should be clearly written without any mistakes.

• Task 1 must be completed within 20 minutes.

Task 2:

• Content should be written with not more than 250 words.

• The points are written should be relevant to the question.

• The duration for task 2 is 40 minutes.

General Writing:

Task 1:

• Task 1 of the IELTS writing test has to be in the form of a letter to someone requesting information or addressing some situation based on the question.
• Students will have to read the question well, understand, and then frame their letter with to the point words.
• Words used in task 1 should not exceed 150 words.
• Task 1 should be completed within 20 minutes so that there is enough time for attempting task 2.
• Mostly the situation provided in the question is based on general topics.
• Students can use bullet points in their letter for better presentation (if required).

Task 2:

• Task 2 essay should not exceed 250 words.
• Answers should be relevant to the question and should be completed within 40 minutes.
• Answers should be written without grammatical errors to score good points.

Information on IELTS Speaking Test

IELTS speaking test is the same for both academic and general candidates. IELTS speaking test is conducted for nearly 11 to 14 minutes. The students will get questions about themselves, followed by their interests, and so on. This test is conducted to check the English fluency of the candidates. Students can give elaborate answers when needed during the last few minutes when the detailed answers are expected but should ensure that it does not cross the test duration and also it is important and relevant to the question.

• Part 1 involves the questions to get to know details about the candidate.
• Part 2 is where the candidate is asked to speak on a topic for about 1 to 2 minutes.
• Part 3 is where the questioner asks more questions related to the topic on which the candidate had already spoken.
