The International English Language Testing System (IELTS exam) can be given in two formats namely IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Test. Candidates should check the requirement of the college/university they are applying to and then prepare accordingly. IELTS Academic is recognized by universities all around the world where students apply for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The IELTS exam design is divided into four portions, each of which assesses a candidate's ability on a number of different criteria.

What is the passing score for IELTS?

IELTS does not have a minimum passing score. For admissions, each university has a separate IELTS band score criteria. Everyone with a score between 1 and 9 receives an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF). If a test-taker fails to show up for IELTS, he or she will receive a band 0 score. The IELTS pattern is created for two distinct groups of people, and the substance of the parts changes slightly. Each format's IELTS reading and writing components follow a different structure. For IELTS Academic and IELTS general training, the sources of passages for IELTS reading are different.

IELTS conducted by British Council or IDP in India for English Language Proficiency test takers. IELTS has two exam patterns, like General Training and Academic, it measures skills of reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. IELTS is a Computer-delivered pattern and paper-delivered.

Type 1 (Multiple choice)

The test taker chooses 1 option correct from the three options A, B, and C as was given.

Type 2 (Matching)

Answers have to mark in the question paper.

Type 3 (Plan, map, diagram labeling)

The ability to complete the visuals from the recording heard checked. A set of pictures given and the candidate selects the right kind of diagram from the set given and mark in the answer sheet.

Type 4 (Form, note, table, flowchart, summary completion)

A variety is possible in this case. The ability to complete the exact word details checked. The details numeric, directive, or inductive.

Type 5 (Sentence completion)

The completion of the sentence is done using one word/number. A part of the sentence is given, and the other part has to complete.

Type 6 (Short-answer questions)

The phrase has to written just to complete the sentence. The group of 3 words/numbers has to write based on the recording head. The penalty charged for more terms.

IELTS Writing

IELTS Reading is different for both Academic and General Training test takers. Test takers have to complete 2 tasks in 60 minutes Word limit for Task 1 is 150 words and Task 2 is 250 words.

IELTS Academic Writing Test

Type 1(Multiple choice)

  • Select the answer from the four options and the best two responses from the five options and seven options from the best three solutions.

Type 2 (Identifying information)

  • Candidates read the passage and answer the questions.

Type 3 (Identifying writer’s views/claims)

  • Candidates do the following statements agree with the views/claims of the writer and Complete agreement if yes means then no means the view is opposite.

Type 4(Matching information)

  • Information located in these to identify more than one piece of data from the given set of data. The data can designate in multiple paragraphs of ways. The use of alphabets is allowed in such cases.

Type 5(Matching heading)

  • To identify the information related to the question has to be obtained from the paragraph. The letters will used to mark the correct passage from which the data has derived. The letters have to fill in the answer sheet.

Type 6 (Matching features)

  • The candidate has to match the information given in the two sets of columns.

Type 7 (Matching sentence endings)

  • The first half of the sentence given, and the second half select by the candidate.

Type 8 (Sentence completion)

  • A specific number of words like 2 or 3 can use complete the task given. The penalty is there if more names used. The ability to identify the information as asked in the question tested.

Type 9 (Summary, note, table, flow-chart completion)

  • The answers are to fill in the format it asked in the question. The solutions in one section of the passage. The answers will appear in order. There can two types of items that asked. The answers have to completed in the defined number of words. The marks will lost if more words used to describe an answer. The solutions can include the number, figures, or names. If a list is given, a single word answer has to write. The ability to identify summary, notes, main idea, and additional information tested.

Type 10 (Diagram label completion)

  • The labels have to complete based on the description given in the text. The word limit is defined. The ability to identify the primary information or relation to the same tested.

Type 11 (Short-answer questions)

  • The questions based on the facts given in the text. The answer has to be written in the form of words or numbers, as asked in the answer sheet. Numbers can written using figures or words. Contracted words not tested. Hyphenated words count as single words.

IELTS General Training Writing Test

Type 1(Multiple choice)

  • The candidate selects the best answer from the four options/ best two responses from the five possibilities/ best three responses from the seven options. The answers occur in the order they given in the choices. The candidate must complete the stem given. The ability to understand the primary, as well as the subject information, is tested.

Type 2 (Identifying information)

  • The right/false/not given are the three choices offered in the IELTS answer sheet. The candidate has to analyze the nature of the passage and then answer the question. Just to note that “false” is different from the not given option. By false, they mean that the problem is opposite to what asked in the passage. By “not given,” they say that the data not provided in the journey. Ability to identify the primary information test.

Type 3(Identifying writer’s views/claims)

  • The options are yes/no/not given. The choice based on the answer to the question, Do the following statements agree with the views/claims of the writer. Yes means complete agreement. No means the view is opposite to what is expressed in the passage. “not given” means that you cannot conclude as the pictures are neither confirmed nor contradicted. The ability to identify the main opinion tested. These types of questions examine the discursive or argumentative texts.

Type 4(Matching information)

  • The crux information provided on the answer sheet. The correct information crux has to match with each paragraph. The use of alphabets is allowed.The ability to match the accurate idea tested.

Type 5(Matching heading)

  • The heading is to identify each of the paragraphs given. The titles give in sequence in the answer sheet. Ability to identify the crux of each section in the text is tested and not the central theme.

Type 6 (Matching features)

  • Match the information given in the first column to the information provided in the question. The best halves have to match. The items may not appear in order. The ability to identify the relationship between the facts given in the text tested.

Type 7 (Matching sentence endings

  • The first part of the text given, and the second has to be filled by the candidate. The best option from the list given has to choose. Ability to identify the main idea of the text tested.

Type 8 (Sentence completion)

  • The test taker has to complete the text in the given number of words. The answer is the version provided. The upper limit defined on the word limit must be kept in mind. Ability to identify the primary information tested.

Type 9 (Summary, note, table, flow-chart completion)

  • The summary has to complete a particular section of the text. Only one part of the version tested. The information can in the form of several connected sentences of paragraph (referred to as a summary), several notes (referred to as notes), a table with some of its cells empty or partially empty (covered to as a table), a series of boxes or steps linked by arrows to show a sequence of events, with some of the boxes or steps empty or partially empty (referred to as a flow-chart). The answer has to select from the list given. The blanks are more than the words allowed, as the text is descriptive nature. Assess the main idea of the document and to convert it in the form of a summary or notes.

Type 10 (diagram label completion)

  • The information has to complete on the labels given on the diagram. Questions have to answer in the defined number of words. Negative marking in case the terms are more than the word limit. The task type is often descriptive in nature and the ability to convert the information flow from theory to the diagram.

Type 11 (Short-answer questions)

  • Questions asked based on the fact given in the text. The use of numbers or figures is allowed. Contracted words not tested. Hyphenated words count as single words. The answer has to write in the word limit given.
