Both the General GRE and the Subject GRE examinations' objectives for the GRE 2023 are completely different. Although the GRE General test syllabus focuses on verbal reasoning, it also assesses quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities. The GRE Subject Test syllabus rates a candidate's proficiency in a variety of subject areas, including Chemistry, Psychology, and Mathematics. The 2023 GRE test syllabus accounts for the differences between the two versions. Additionally, the proficiency of candidates is assessed using distinct criteria on each of the two GRE exams.

GRE Subject Test
Students are assigned a raw score for only correct responses. Wrong answer, multiple answers, and leaving any question unanswered will consider as incorrect, but there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. GRE Raw scores will then convert into a scaled score through the process called equating. The process helps in evaluating a normalized score keeping in mind the difficulty level of the paper.
-
All the subject tests scored on a range of 200 to 990 with 10 point increments.
-
The Biology and Psychology also have subscore range on a 20–99 score scale, in one-point increments.

GRE General Test
For the computer-based general test, the verbal and quantitative sections will be section-level adaptive. It means the computer will choose the second section depending upon a candidate’s performance in the first section. Questions asked in all the parts will contribute to the final raw score calculation. The raw score will convert into a scaled score.
-
The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning parts scored on a range of 130-170, in 1 point increments.
-
Analytical Reasoning scored in a range of 0–6, in half-point increments.
-
If candidates do not answer any questions of any/all measures, then a No Score (NS) is stated for that measure.
