New Update on 30.01.2023: CLAT Syllabus 2023 - CLAT Syllabus 2023 covers a wide range of subjects, including English, mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning, and more. CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is a national entrance exam for law school. It is set up to provide admissions to law programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Consortium of National Law Universities oversees this test. CLAT scores can also be used to get admission to several governments and private law colleges across the country. CLAT Syllabus 2023 - Undergraduate level

The Consortium has designed the CLAT UG syllabus to test candidates on the basis of their aptitude and skills which are considered crucial for legal education. CLAT UG syllabus is divided into the following subjects.

• English language

• Current affairs, including general knowledge

• Legal Reasoning

• Logical reasoning

• Quantitative techniques

CLAT Syllabus 2023 - English language

This section is designed to test the reading ability of students. There will be around four to five comprehension passages of about 450 words each. The content of the passages will be derived from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing. Each passage will be followed by four to five objective-type questions that require the candidates to demonstrate the following skills.

• Read and comprehend the main point discussed in the passage, as well as any arguments and viewpoints discussed or set out in the passage

• Drawing inferences and conclusions from the passage.

• Summarising the passage

• Compare and contrast the different arguments or viewpoints given in the passage.

• Understand the meaning of various words and phrases used in the passage.

CLAT syllabus for current affairs, including general knowledge

The general knowledge and current affairs section will also have comprehension passages of up to 450 words each. A series of objective types of questions will follow each passage. Overall, there will be around 35-39 questions, making around 25% of the test paper. The content of comprehension passages will be drawn from the following topics.

• News

• Legal editorials and opinions

• Journalistic sources

• Other non-fiction writing

• Contemporary events of significance from India and the world;

• Arts and culture;

• International affairs; and

• Historical events of continuing significance.

The questions from CLAT current affairs and general knowledge may include an examination of legal information or knowledge.

CLAT syllabus for logical reasoning

The CLAT reasoning will be designed to test the candidates' critical thinking and analytical skills. Around 28-32 objective-type questions will require the candidates to demonstrate the following skills.

• Recognizing the arguments, their premises and drawing conclusions

• Reading and identifying the arguments set out in the passage

• Critical examination of the patterns of reasoning, and assessing evidence and premises on which a particular conclusion can be based.

• Infer what follows from the passage and apply these inferences to new situations

• Drawing relationships and analogies, identifying contradictions and equivalence, and assessing the effectiveness of arguments.

CLAT 2023 syllabus for legal aptitude

This section will have 25% weightage in the paper. There will be around four to five comprehension passages of around 450 words each. The passages may be drawn from various fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions or moral philosophical enquiries. Candidates are expected to have prior knowledge of law. However, some basic understanding and awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues will be helpful in answering the questions.

Types of questions asked in CLAT legal aptitude.

The CLAT legal aptitude may have questions revolving around the following theme;

• Identify and infer the rules and principles set out in the passage;

• Apply such rules and principles to various fact situations; and

• Understand how changes to the rules or principles may alter their application to various fact situations.

CLAT syllabus for quantitative aptitude

The maths section will be of Class 10th level. There will be questions from short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial or diagrammatic representations of numerical information. Candidates will be required to derive information from such facts, diagrams, passages, graphs or other representations and apply the mathematical formulas and operations to answer the questions.

Overall, there will be around 13-17 questions.

Topics to be studied: Ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration, and statistical estimation, percentage, loss, profit etc.

CLAT Syllabus 2023 (UG) - Subject-wise marks distribution

Each section of CLAT 2023 syllabus will carry some fixed weightage. The consortium has prescribed the following distribution of questions and marks CLAT UG paper.

CLAT 2023 Syllabus - LLM

For CLAT PG, the test paper will be divided into two sections; the objective section and the descriptive section. It may be noted that the descriptive section has been restored again. Last year, the descriptive section which requires the candidates to write two essays was removed from the syllabus to make the paper suitable for online mode. The present syllabus of CLAT LLM is as follows.

Objective section

The PG-CLAT 2023 objective section will be a comprehension-based test in which extracts from primary legal materials such as important court decisions in various fields of law, statutes or regulations will be provided. Each comprehension passage will be followed by a series of multiple-choice questions that will test the following skills of the candidates.

• Ability to read and understand the legal issues given passage, identifying the arguments and viewpoints in the passage.

• Awareness of the issues discussed in the passage. Legal aspects, facts, and knowledge related to the topic discussed in the passage.

• Awareness of the judgment or statute on which the passage is based on.

• Summarising the passage and ability to apply the knowledge of law discussed in the passage.

Descriptive section

The essay or descriptive section has been restored this year. In this section, candidates will be asked to write essays answering any 2 questions from the list of questions given in the paper. The word count of essays should not be more than 800 words each. In the section, candidates will be required to demonstrate the following aspects.

• Awareness of the legal, factual, and philosophical issues arising out of the questions you choose to answer.

• Ability to structure your answer clearly set out various arguments and perspectives related to the topic in the questions, and draw a conclusion based on the above.

CLAT LLM syllabus 2023

The content of the passages and the questions may be drawn from various legal reports, judgments, status etc. However, the candidates will be required to conceptualize the basic legal subjects mentioned below.

National Law Universities (NLUs) released the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) syllabus 2020 for BA LLB, BSc LLB, BCom LLB, BBA LLB, BSW LLB. Section 1- English Comprehension

This section has proficiency in English is tested based on the questions related to comprehension passages and grammar. The comprehension section evaluated based on their understanding of the passage, the central theme, meanings of words used in the passage, etc. The grammar section requires the correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

• 450 words based on the contemporary, historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing

• 5-7 mins to read and comprehend it, and candidates have to compare and contrast different viewpoints, draw inferences and conclusions, and understand the meaning of words and phrases from the passage to attempt the questions.

Section 2-General Knowledge and Currents Affairs

This section, based on their general awareness with static general knowledge. Current affair questions test about the events happening nationally and internationally.

• 450 words based on news, journalistic sources, and other non-fiction writings

• Legal information and knowledge in India and the world, arts and culture, world affairs, and historical events of continuing significance.

Section 3-Quantitative Techniques

This section, elementary mathematics up to Class 10th standard, will be tested. The section carries passages based on short sets of facts, propositions, graphs, pictorials, textual, or diagrammatic representations of numerical data. Candidates must attempt the objective-type of questions based on calculating the information. The candidates have to derive, infer, and manipulate the numerical data, based on ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration, and statistics.

Section 4- Legal Aptitude

This section has 450 words based on legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries. The questions based on general awareness, legal, and ethical issues. Candidates with law subjects can attempt the section easily.

Section 5- Logical Reasoning

The logical reasoning section of CLAT 2020 has 300 words based on relationships, analogies, logical sequences, and arguments. Candidates required to critically analyze the discussions, the pattern of reasoning, identify contradictions and then conclude the studies.

Constitutional Law:

This section consists of various rules, practices, and doctrines that govern the functioning of a modern state and other political communities. Students are asked questions based on the concepts they studied at graduation.

Jurisprudence

In this part, in a broader sense, it can be called the philosophy of law. It classifies into three branches - analytical, sociological, and theoretical. This section questions are set based on the syllabus prescribed in the graduation degree course.

Tort Law

This section is comparatively a recent common law development in India based on codifying statutes, including statutes related to damages. Some of the crucial tortious obligations like Negligence, Nuisance, and Defamation should revise in detail.

Contract law

This Contract law can refer to a piece of a legal document, which is a mutual agreement made by two or more parties, enforceable by law. Essential decisions made by the Supreme Court and High Court concerning modern-day commercial activities comprise this subject.

Criminal Law

Criminal Law, also called Penal Law aimed at regulating the Social code of conduct and prohibiting any antisocial activity that threatens the safety, property, health and moral welfare of citizens. Essential topics on principles of criminal liability (guilty mind in Criminal Law) should give special attention.

International Law

International Law as a subject focused on the set of legal guidelines and contracts that govern the relations between two states or nations. International Laws can broadly classify into Public International law, Private International Law, and Supranational Law.
