An overview of CAT Exam Eligibility

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) will be conducting CAT 2019 this year in the month of November. IIM-C has announced the CAT Eligibility criteria on its official website and the eligibility details remain same as in previous years. As per the latest news, CAT exam will be held soon. What’s the Eligibility for CAT 2019?

Starting from 2014, there is no change in CAT Eligibility Criteria, except that IIM Indore had announced that it would accept candidates with 2-years graduation course. As per the CAT eligibility criteria announced by the exam convening body, candidates should have completed their graduation with 50% marks and aspirants from reserved category should have scored 45% marks in their graduation to apply for CAT. Students who are pursuing final year should submit a certificate from the principal/registrar of their respective university stating that they have done with all the requirements for acquiring the equivalent qualification at the time of the issue of the certificate.

Can Backlog aspirants apply for CAT?

The most common question raised by the students who are having backlogs is whether they are eligible to apply for CAT or not. It is clear that students with academic backlogs can also apply. During CAT registration 2017, Indian Institute of Management Lucknow received a lot of queries from the students regarding the CAT registration with academic backlogs. Although, the IIM Lucknow did not mention that candidates with backlogs should not apply. It is expected that it will remain the same in this year too, so candidates can apply for CAT and appear for the exam in November 2019.
 
Key points to consider:

  • Candidates with academic backlogs who apply for CAT should select "Yes" to the question "Are you in the final year of Bachelor Degree?"
  • Aspirants who are pursuing their final year should submit a certificate stating that they have appeared for supplementary re-examination and waiting for results.

What are the equivalent degrees to apply for CAT?

You may have a doubt regarding the equivalent degrees qualified to apply for CAT. Candidates who are pursuing any of the equivalent degrees mentioned below are eligible to appear for CAT 2019. Here are equivalent qualifications that are valid for appearing in CAT 2019, 

  • Candidates who have completed undergraduate education in Engineering or Technology of 4-years duration in the order 10+12 or Post B.Sc. or Post Diploma are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have a degree which is equivalent to bachelor degree in Engineering and Technology of Professional Societies recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE such as AMIE by Institution of Engineers, India or AMICE by Institute of Civil Engineers of India can apply for CAT.
  • Aspirants who have CA/CS/ICWA degree with 50% (General) and 45% (SC/ST/PWD) are eligible to apply.
  • Additionally, candidates with any other qualification that is not mentioned here can also apply by submitting an equivalency certificate issued by Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.
  • Aspirants who have an academic qualification which is equivalent to bachelor’s degree recognized by Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi are also eligible to apply.

What is the CAT Eligibility 2019 for Final Year Students?

As we know that, final year students from any bachelor's degree background are eligible to apply for CAT. Though, the candidate who clears their final year exam with 50% of marks is eligible for further rounds. Please note that IIMs verify CAT exam eligibility criteria at various stages of CAT selection procedure. Hence, it is must have graduation with at least 50% marks if you are from general category and 45% marks are needed for candidates from SC/ST/PwD.

What is the CAT Eligibility for candidates with work experience?

As per the CAT Eligibility criteria, it is not necessary to hold any work experience to apply for CAT. The work experience does not play a deciding factor in the final selection process of IIMs. However, the work experience will be given some weightage to the candidates but that will be at the last stage of final selection by the IIMs. The weightage given by the IIMs may vary from one to another.
CAT Reservation Policy
IIMs follows reservation guidelines of Central government for admission of candidates to their MBA programs. As per the reservation guidelines followed by the IIMs, there are two types of reservations of seats.

  • Caste-based reservation
  • Reservation for differently abled individuals

What are the documents needed for Caste based reservation?

Candidates who apply for CAT under the caste-based reservation should possess the following documents,

  • Candidates should upload their SC/ST/NC-OBC certificate while they fill the application form.
  • Aspirants should submit their original caste certificate at the time of personal interview and admission.

Candidates can check the caste certificate format on the official website of CAT.

What is the age limit of CAT?

There is no age limit for applying CAT. The eligibility needed to apply for CAT is that candidates should have their Bachelor’s degree with minimum 50% marks or its equivalent degree from the recognized university or institution.

Essential certificates needed to apply

Candidates who fall under the differently-abled category should upload a valid PwD/DA certificate during filling the CAT application form. The reservation policy for differently abled candidates varies from the caste-based reservation policy. They are as follows,

Please note that the reservation policy for differently abled candidates will be applicable for those who suffer from the following disabilities at least to the extent of 40% or more,
 

  1. (a) Blindness and low vision
  2. (b) Deaf and hard of hearing
  3. (c) Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy.
  4. (d) Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness
  5. Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (d)
  6. Other 'specified disabilities' mentioned in 'The Schedule' of the RPwD Act 2016
