ACT Exam Pattern 2021: The standardized test American College Testing (ACT) is conducted by ACT, Inc., a non-profit organisation. The exam conducting authority prescribes and provides the details of the ACT Exam Pattern 2021. It would be useful for the students who attempt the exam, if they know the ACT Exam Pattern 2021. ACT® Test is conducted to assess the readiness of the high school students who aspire to pursue their undergraduate studies in the US. ACT Exam Pattern 2021 has been designed in a way that the participants can connect with their high school curriculum while preparing for it. As per the ACT Exam Pattern 2021, the candidates can appear in any of the two formats of ACT test namely ACT (without/no writing) and ACT (with writing). 

The choice of the format will depend on the specifications by the preferred colleges in the US to which candidates desire to apply. The ACT test is conducted for 4 hours and the students are required to answer 215 questions. It also assesses the speed and endurance levels of the appearing candidates. As per the ACT Exam Pattern 2021 prescribed by the ACT exam authorities, the paper will consist of four subjects namely Mathematics, Science and English. Section-wise ACT Exam Pattern 2021 Details

The ACT exam will be conducted for 45 minutes. It consists of 75 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The ACT Exam has different sections namely Mathematics, Reading, Science, English, Writing (optional essay). The sections are explained in detail:

English

The English test as per the ACT Exam Pattern 2021 assumes that the candidates are writers who can make decisions to revise and edit a text. This section provides Short texts and essays in different genres to provide a variety of rhetorical situations. The passages will assess writing and language skills and also their interests and experiences. Questions will be as follows

  • Portions of passages will be underlined and alternatives options will be given for the underlined portion. Candidates must decide which choice is most appropriate in the context of the given passage

  • Some questions about the underlined portion will be asked, a section of the passage, or the passage as a whole. Candidates should decide which choice is the best answer to the question posed. 

The scores allotted for English section are a total test score based on all 75 questions. The scores will be given based on three reporting categories on specific knowledge and skills. The approximate percentage of each reporting category is given as follows

1. Production of Writing: This category will hold 29 - 32%. Candidates need to apply their understanding of the purpose and focus of a piece of writing. This section includes:

  • Topic Development 

  • Organization, Unity, and Cohesion

2. Knowledge of Language: This category will hold 13 - 19%. In this section, the questions will show effective language usage. It ensures precision and concision in word choice and maintains consistency in style and tone.

3. Conventions of Standard English: This category will hold 51–56%. Here, students can apply an understanding of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, and mechanics to revise and edit text. It has the following parameters.

  • Sentence Structure and Formation: Candidates should understand sentence structure and formation in a text and make revisions to improve the writing.

  • Punctuation: Candidates should recognize common problems with standard English punctuation and make revisions as needed

  • Usage: Candidates should recognize common problems with the usage of standard English in a text and revisions to improve it

Mathematics

The time duration for the mathematics section is 60 minutes.  A total of 60 questions will be asked in this section. The questions will be of a multiple-choice type in order to assess the candidate’s mathematical capability typically acquired in school courses until Grade 12.

Candidates should use their analytical and reasoning skills to solve practical problems. To solve the problems, the Candidates should apply the basic formulas and computational skills, basic knowledge of the subject. Candidates can use the permitted calculator in the mathematics section alone. So, the candidates should ensure whether their calculator is permitted.

Reading

The reading section will be conducted for 35 minutes. This section of the test comprises 40 multiple-choice questions. This section has been designed to evaluate the ability of the candidates to solve reading comprehension questions. In this section, the candidates are required to derive meaning from several academic text passages that have been:

  • referred to what has been explicitly mentioned

  • Usage of the candidate's reasoning skills to determine the implicit meaning

Science

According to the ACT Exam Pattern 2021, the Science section’s duration is 35 minutes. It comprises 40 questions. The science test will measure the candidate's Analysis, Evaluation, Reasoning, Interpretation, and problem-solving skills, which are considered a prerequisite for admission in the natural sciences. The calculator isn’t allowed during the science test.

Writing (Essay)

The writing section will be conducted for 40 minutes. The writing test (or essay test) includes one writing prompt for judging a student’s writing skills that were acquired in high school and in entry-level college composition courses.

The essay test will describe an issue and presents three alternatives before the student. Students should evaluate and analyze the alternatives and come up with their own perspective. Finally, they need to compare their perspective with those given. Candidate’s scores will not be affected by the nature of the perspective you take.

Marking Scheme of ACT 2021

ACT Exam Pattern 2021, there will be no negative marking. This will provide the candidates with the scope to attempt all the questions. If the candidates are unsure of an answer, they can still make a smart guess as no marks will be deducted for incorrect answers.
