  • Chhattisgarh government reduces interest on loan under Saksham Yojna

    Chhattisgarh State Government has reduced the rate of interest on loan given to women and their self-help groups (SHGs) under ‘Saksham Yojna’ from 6.5 percent to 5 percent. Saksham Yojana too is operated by Chhattisgarh Mahila Kosh, under which loans to the tune of Rs 72 lakh had been distributed to about 111 SHGs during the current fiscal year 2017-18.

    Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu lays foundation stone for TU142M aircraft museum

    Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the TU142M aircraft museum in Visakhapatnam. It is being built at the Beach Road in Visakhapatnam. The TU142M aircraft museum will be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind in December 2017. The Russian aircraft TU142M was decommissioned at INS Rajali in Tamil Nadu after 29 years. It was brought to Visakhapatnam on 8th April 2017 to be converted into a Museum.

The founder of the SM Sehgal Foundation are the other philanthropists who have received this award in the past.

    Indian peacekeepers in South Sudan awarded UN medal

    50 Indian peacekeepers placed in South Sudan were awarded the UN Medal for their service in maintaining peace in South Sudan. The award was presented by UNMISS Force Commander General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi. Indian Ambassador to South Sudan, Srikumar Menon, attended the medal ceremony.

    MCX launches first commodity options trading with gold

    Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) launched trading in Gold option’s contract in presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Underlying for Gold options contract which is currently available for trading are Gold (1 Kg) futures expiring on November 28, 2017, and January 29, 2018. The Options in securities and commodities market are primarily meant for hedging. However they are also used for speculation.

    Pakistan elected among 15 nations to UN Human Rights Council

    The15 member nations including Pakistan have been elected to serve on the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council. 15 new member nations who have been elected are Afghanistan, Angola, Australia, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine.

    Zimbabwe bans Fruit, Vegetable imports as Forex Crunch Deepens

    The east African landlocked country Zimbabwe, with immediate effect, banned the import of fruits and vegetables to preserve the scarce foreign currencies. Last year Zimbabwe spent more than $80 million on fruit and vegetables which included tomatoes, onions, carrots, grapes, apples and oranges. Many of the Zimbabweans are keeping U.S. dollars at home or they are spending in buying Hard Currency on the black market. This same situation was prevailing during the period of hyperinflation a decade ago.

    Ministry of Women and Child Development launches campaign on 'women for women'

    The Ministry of Women and Child Development is undertaking an online campaign #IamThatWoman. The main aim seeks to highlight the various aspects of women standing 'by' and 'for' women. Ministry of WCD has urged people to shun stereotypes associated with women harming other women. Twitter and Facebook users have been encouraged to tag and share stories of women helping women with a photograph and post online with the hashtag #IamThatWoman. A woman manager can easily empathize with her female juniors and help her climb the ladder of success.

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Launches 'Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana'

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the ambitious 'Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojna' for the farmers of the state.  Madhya Pradesh is the first state to lend money to farmers at zero percent interest. The government has approved a web of irrigation projects across the Sagar District which will cover 96-hectare fields.

    India Signs Pact to Send Interns to Japan for Training

    India signed a Memorandum of Co-operation (MoC) with Japan to send youngsters there as technical interns for on-the-job training for a period of three to five years. The MoC on Technical Intern Training Programme was signed by Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Japanese Minister of Health, Labour, and Welfare with Katsunobu Kato in Tokyo. India is the third country with which Japan has signed the MoC.

    US Author George Saunders Wins 2017 Man Booker Prize

    US author George Saunders won the 2017 Man Booker Prize. He became only the second American writer to win Britain’s renowned Prize, which was awarded for his first full-length novel “Lincoln in the Bardo”.  The 2016 Man Booker Prize went to 'The Sellout' by Paul Beatty.

    Google Viewed as Most Authentic Brand in India: Survey

    Indian consumers regard Google as the most authentic brand, even though tops the list globally, reveal results of the 2017 "Authentic Brands Study" by the new survey of global communications agency Cohn & Wolfe. In India, Google is followed by Microsoft,, Maruti Suzuki and Apple. Globally, Apple takes the second spot after Amazon in the authenticity race.

  • Footwear Design & Development Institute Act 2017 Comes into Force

    Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI)  declared an ‘Institute of National Importance’ under Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. The FDDI bill was passed by the Parliament in July 2017.  The Provisions of FDDI Act 2017 have come into force. Presently FDDI is imparting skill based graduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of footwear, leather goods, retail, and management to around 2,500 students across eight campuses spread over India.

    Dharmendra Pradhan on a Three-Day Visit to Japan

    Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on a three-day visit to Japan to participate in the 6th annual LNG Producers Consumer Conference. The visit is important to enhance the bilateral engagements in the Oil and Gas sectors within the overall framework of India-Japan Energy Dialogue.  Energy Ministers from Qatar, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Japan and other leading hydrocarbon experts will participate in the Conference.

    Yes Bank Commits Rs 156 crores for Namami Gange Project

    Private sector Yes Bank has committed Rs 156 crore to fund first Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to be constructed at Varanasi under Hybrid Annuity-PPP Model. The bank has signed a deal with Essel Infraprojects for the financial closure of Rs 156 crore that will fund the STP under Namami Gange Project.

    Ayurveda 2nd Day is celebrated on 17 October

    This year's 2nd Ayurveda Day is celebrated on 17 October in New Delhi by the Ministry of AYUSH. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Chief Guest and will also inaugurate the country's first All India Institute of Ayurveda, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi. The All India Institute of Ayurveda, set up on a total area of 10.015 acres on a budget of Rs 157 crore, is the first medical institute under the AYUSH ministry to hold the coveted National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation.

    Mahindra launches ‘Prerna’ project for women farmers

    Auto manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra celebrated ‘Mahila Kisan Diwas’ and launched a programme, ‘Prerna’ to empower women working in the agriculture sector. Prerna’ project is aimed at promoting the use of efficient and ergonomic farm tools and equipment by women who work long hours in the fields. It is first launched in Odisha, with an aim to positively impact the lives of over 1,500 families across 30-plus villages.

    Bangkok Bank signs deal with Intellect Design for Digital Transaction Banking Platform

    Bangkok Bank is Thailand’s market leader in corporate and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) banking. The digital portal which will be developed by iGTB for Bangkok Bank will integrate a number of previously separate platforms, thereby enabling a consistent and consolidated view of clients’ working capital and payments activities, irrespective of the country they operate in. With back-end processing of transactions, risk management and reporting, all centralised and handled in one place, Bangkok Bank’s transaction processing rate will improve significantly.

    Punjab police launches foot patrolling in all districts

    Punjab police launched foot patrolling an initiative whereby police personnel will patrol designated areas on foot to keep a watch on anti-social elements. The main Objective of foot patrolling is to reduce incidence of crime by increasing the presence of police in vulnerable locations. All foot patrol officers will be wearing jungle boots, specially designed arm-band and will carry weapons, baton, handcuffs, and wireless sets.

    First Investment Agreement signed between NIIF and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority

    India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) of India on has signed an investment agreement worth $1 billion with Abu Dhabi Investment. With this, ADIA became first institutional investor in NIIF’s Master Fund and shareholder in NIIF’s investment management Company. NIIF is claimed to be India’s first sovereign wealth fund.

    IBM Launches Blockchain Banking Network To Speed Cross-border Payments

    International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) announced the launch of IBM Blockchain, a new blockchain banking solution, that will help financial institutions for cross-border payments. It is partnered with regional financial services company KlickEx Group and, a nonprofit organization that supports an open source blockchain network for financial services.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the All India Institute of Ayurveda at Sarita Vihar in New Delhi. The First ever All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) has been set up along the lines of AIIMS. Within the short duration of its establishment, AIIA has gained a wide national and International recognition. It has started working to facilitate quality patient care, research and bridging the gaps in the scientific information about quality, safety, and efficacy of Ayurveda products and developing benchmarks of Ayurvedic education, research and healthcare.

  • INS Kiltan commissioned into Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam

    Indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kiltan was commissioned an into the Indian Navy at the Eastern Naval Command (Naval Dockyard) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is India’s first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fiber composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight. INS Kiltan commissioned into Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam October 16, 2017.

    Union Government has started sending money to Gram Panchayats directly

    Minister of State Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore stated that Union Government started sending money to Gram Panchayats directly so that they can plan their development works on their own. Around 29 crore new accounts have been opened in last two and half years and now benefits of different schemes are being transferred directly to the accounts of the beneficiaries. He has made the Banks accountable and if they refuse to give the loan to any person under MUDRA Yojna then they have to give a reason.

    World Food Day is observed on 16th October

    Food and Agricultural Organisation of United Nations (FAO) celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar.  The Theme for World Food Day 2017 is "Change the future of migration.     Singer T M Krishna wins Indira Gandhi National Integration

    Singer T M Krishna won 30th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for the year 2015 and 2016. He is a pre-eminent vocalist in the Carnatic tradition of Indian classical music and has been an activist who has worked to break down caste-barriers in the society. The award is conferred for promoting national integration and strengthening nation’s sense of solidarity. It carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh.

    Indian Airports need $45 billion investment to improve capacity by 2030

    India must invest around $45 billion to generate an additional capacity of handling 500- 600 million passengers at its airports by 2030. As per the estimation of Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) the country’s top 17 airports current capacity is 298-316.5 million passengers per annum approximately. The ten airports namely Pune, Jaipur, Srinagar, Lucknow, Dehradun, Agartala, Guwahati, Kozhikode, Mangalore, and Trichy are managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), are already operating “beyond their design capacity”.

    Rajasthan Assembly becomes first in India to call motions online

    Rajasthan State assembly become the first in India to call attention and adjournment motions and proposals online from legislators. The new online system was inaugurated by Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Speaker Kailash Meghwal by sending a call for an attention moved to the state government with a click of a mouse. It facilitates smooth exchange of information and reports among respective departments.  

    Audrey Azoulay elected as Director General of UNESCO

    Former French Culture Minister Audrey Azoulay (45) was elected as new Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) the UN’s education, science, and culture agency. She succeeds Irina Bokova of Bulgaria. She defeated Qatar’s Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kawari in the final 30-28 vote after she won a runoff with a third finalist from Egypt.

    Roger Federer Cruises to Shanghai Masters Title

    Roger Federer won world number one Rafael Nadal 6-4 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters and register his fourth victory of the year over his Spanish rival. He is the only man who can still stop Nadal ending the year as number one, took an hour and 12 minutes to claim his sixth title of the year and his second Shanghai crown with a clinical performance. He  has also won a record eighth Wimbledon title & became the tournament’s oldest champion with a straight-sets victory over Marin Cilic. Federer claimed his 19th Grand Slam title in Wimbledon title 2017.

    Prime Minister lays Foundation Stone for Infrastructure Projects in Bihar

    The Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for four sewerage projects under the Namami Gange programme; and four National Highway projects, at Mokama in Bihar. The total outlay of these projects is over Rs. 3700 crore.  The four sewerage projects include Sewage Treatment Plant at Beur, Sewerage System with Sewer Network at Beur, Sewage Treatment Plant at Karmalichak and STP and Sewer Network at Saidpur. These projects together will create new STP capacity of 120 MLD and upgrade the existing 20 MLD for Beur.

    Defence Minister to commission INS Kiltan into Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam

    Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commission an indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kiltan into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The commissioning ceremony will be attended by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba and a host of other dignitaries. INS Kiltan is the latest indigenous warship after Shivalik Class, Kolkata Class and sister ships INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt to have joined the Indian Navy's arsenal.

  • Facebook launches food delivery service in US

    Facebook launched a service in the United States, through which users can order food and get it delivered by using Facebook's app or website. The feature allows users to browse nearby restaurants by visiting the 'Order Food' section on Facebook's 'Explore' menu. The social media giant has partnered with food ordering services like for the same. Restaurant partners include Chipotle, Five Guys, Papa John's and Jack in the Box.

    HC restricts bursting of Firecrackers to Three Hrs in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on Diwali Day

    Four days after Supreme Court banned the sale of crackers in the national capital region, the Punjab and Haryana high court fixed the time slot of 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm for bursting crackers on Diwali in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. No one will be permitted to burst crackers before 6.30 pm or after 9.30 pm.

    Worlds largest combustion research centre inaugurated at IIT Madras

    The world's largest combustion research centre which will impart a major boost to the Indian scientific community was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. The National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) was inaugurated by NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat in the presence of Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology. NCCRD's research interests will cover automotive, thermal power and aerospace propulsion, besides fire research and microgravity combustion to minor extent.

    Esther Staubli became first female referee to officiate a match at the FIFA U17 World Cup

    In line with FIFA’s objective to further develop women’s football, a new milestone has been achieved as Esther Staubli became first female referee to officiate a match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India. Esther, who hails from Bern, Switzerland officiated the match between Japan and New Caledonia at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. As for the U-17 World Cup, Staubli is one of seven female referees invited to the tournament. Seven Women referee selected by FIFA for the U-17 World Cup are: Esther Staubli, Kateryna Monzul, Anna-marie Keighley, Claudia Umpierrez, Carol Anne Chenard, Gladys Lengwe, RI Hyang Ok.

    Vanuatu became the First Nation to accept bitcoin as Payment for its Citizenship Program

    Vanuatu, a South Pacific archipelago, has become the first nation to accept Bitcoins as payment for its 'investment citizenship' program. A family of up to four can receive Vanuatu passports by paying the Bitcoin equivalent of $280,000 (₹1.8 crore). Vanuatu citizenship allows individuals to reside on the island, and travel to over 100 countries without a visa.

    PM Modi announces Rs. 10,000 crore for 20 best varsities in India, to make them world class

    At the centenary celebrations of Patna University (PU), India’s seventh oldest varsity, PM Narendra Modi said that the government has decided to allot ₹10,000 crore and autonomy to 10 public and 10 private universities over the next five years, to make them world-class. The universities will not be selected by the prime minister or a chief minister or any other political figure. Their potential will be assessed by a third party agency.

    Graduate Muslim Girls to get Rs 51,000 Shaadi Shagun from Modi Government

    Meritorious Muslim girls who go on to complete graduation before marriage will get a special gift of Rs.51,000 from the Narendra Modi government. The shaadi shagun – as the scheme is called- is aimed at incentivising higher education among minority groups.

The five-day extravaganza hosting a gathering of over 2,980 exhibitors will have buyers coming from around 100 countries including China, Australia, the US and the UK. The exhibition will end on October 15.

    Kolkata to host International Puppet festival from October 26

    Kolkata will host International Puppet festival for the first time and the six-day long festival will commence from October 26 to 31. West Bengal principal secretary Tourism and Home Affairs Atri Bhattacharya will be inaugurating the festival. Artists from the UK, Germany, Peru, Portugal, Italy, Lithuania, Brazil, Singapore and India would be participating in the festival. The puppet festival is aimed at regenerating the emotions attached to puppetry and it will be held at Mohorkunj.

    The world's first "negative emissions" plant that turns carbon dioxide into carbonate rocks has begun operations in Iceland. The EU-backed project at one of the world's largest geothermal power plants in Hellisheidi, Iceland, will capture CO2 from ambient air for permanent storage underground.
