  • Skill India partners with Airbnb to Upskill hospitality Entrepreneurs

    Current affairs The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s implementation arm National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Skill Council (THSC) signed a tripartite a MoU with Airbnb to provide hospitality skills training to hospitality micro-entrepreneurs in India.  Through the partnership, the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Airbnb, NSDC and THSC will work together to create an accredited skill development module for hospitality entrepreneurs offering homestay facilities, unique accommodations and local experiences.

    West Bengal to get World Bank subsidy to buy 130 electric buses

    West Bengal State Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari mentioned that the state government has negotiated with the World Bank to avail subsidy to buy 130 electric buses. World Bank has agreed to provide a subsidy of Rs seven lakh per bus. Out of the 130 electric buses, 100 would operate in Kolkata and the remaining 30 will operate in industrial towns of Durgapur and Asansol. Bus depots in these towns are equipped with charging batteries. The electric buses would run 150 km on a single charge.

    Karnataka Bank ties up with BCG for transformation initiatives

    Karnataka Bank Limited partnered with the Boston Consulting Group (India) Pvt Limited for its transformation initiatives and the transformation project ‘KBL Vikaas’ was launched in Mangaluru. The transformation project is aimed at total transformation of the bank by re-positioning it as a relevant and significant bank by focusing on technology and by keeping intact its core values and identity. The bank has identified seven major intervention areas for this project. They are: growth aspiration and strategies to achieve growth; rationalisation of service outlets, including digital channels; human resource management structure and strategy; stakeholders’ value enhancement initiatives; efficiency enhancement strategy; corporate branding and repositioning; and partnering and collaborating with Fintech companies, startups.

    Union Minister Nitin Gadkari gets Rs 500 crore commitment for Clean Ganga mission

    The UK-based Indian-origin businessmen have committed to projects worth nearly Rs 500 crore associated with the Clean Ganga mission. The Minister for Ganga, river development, water resources, highways, shipping and transport said that riverfront regeneration and development of ghats in the towns of Patna, Kanpur, Haridwar and Kolkata have been taken on by four leading industrialists from the UK. The businessmen will take on the projects as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda and work with the Indian government on finalising the plans for each of the cities.

    Victoria becomes first Australian state to legalise euthanasia

    Victoria became the first Australian state to legalise assisted dying, or euthanasia, as lawmakers voted to allow terminally ill patients the right to request a lethal drug to end their lives from June 2019. The legislation was passed in Victoria after 100 hours of debate, making it the only place in Australia where the practice will be legal. The scheme will be accessible only to terminally ill patients over 18 living in Victoria with less than six months to live. That applying must be determined by multiple doctors to be suffering intolerable pain and be of sound mind.

    Mumbai to host 15th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation films

    Mumbai is to host the 15th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) for Documentary, Short and Animation films from 28th January to 3rd February 2018. The Mumbai International Film Festival will be inaugurated on 28th January 2018, at the National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai. It is organized by the films Division, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B). The Organizing Committee of MIFF is headed by the Secretary, I&B and consists of eminent film personalities, documentary makers and film critics. The Award money for the Lifetime Achievement award has also been doubled to Rs 1 million. All together cash awards of Rs 5.8 million will be given away during MIFF 2018.

    DAC approves procurement of new radio technology for Indian Navy

    The Union Defence Ministry approved procurement of 260 Software Defined Radios (SDR), naval communication sets for Indian Navy at cost of Rs. 49. The decision was taken at a meeting of Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. These 260 SDRs will be procured under the category of buy (India Designed Developed & Manufactured).

    India and Italy ink pact to deepen cooperation in health sector

    India and Italy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in the health sector by exchanging and training of medical doctors, officials, other health professionals and experts. The Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Beatrice Lorenzin, Health Minister of Italy signed the MoU in the presence of senior officers from the Health Ministry and a high-level delegation from Italy. He stated that both the countries share a strong and rich traditional relationship which has been enhanced by high-level visits. Also, there is a mutual interest in the promotion of stronger ties in the health sector.

    IOA Formally Recognises Boxing Federation of India

    The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) was recognised as a national body by the Indian Olympic Association, which removed the terminated Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) as its affiliate after months of indecision. The BFI, already recognised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and the Sports Ministry, finally got the IOA’s nod, which had IABF registered as the official body till now. The IOA’s decision is expected to end the IABF’s attempts at reviving itself.

    Mirabai Chanu lifts 194 kgs to win gold medal at 2017 World Weightlifting Championships

    Mirabai Chanu became only the second Indian (after Karnam Malleswari) to win the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA. After achieving the feat Chanu was left in tears as he went up to the podium to collect her medal. Since last year’s mediocre performance at the Rio Olympics Chanu put in a lot of effort in her game and is deservedly reaping the benefits.

    Archers Abhishek Verma and Jyoti Surekha Vennam bags Gold and Bronze medal in Asia Archery Championship

    Abhishek Verma won a gold medal and Jyothi Surekha Vennam a bronze medal at the Asian Archery Championship. The tournament began in 1980 and it was first hosted in India. Countries such as South Korea, China, Japan and India compete, with many of the world's leading archers representing them.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate HT Leadership Summit in New Delhi

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in New Delhi. Former US President Barack Obama, Afghanistan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chattishgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh will also address different sessions during the two-day event.

    Odisha Chief Minister unveils logo and mascot of Hockey World Cup 2018

    Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the logo and mascot for the Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. He also launched the countdown timer for the international event scheduled to be held here from November 28 to December 16, 2018. He gave away cash awards worth Rs 76.75 lakh to 59 sportspersons from the state for their outstanding contributions in their respective sports. Hockey players Dipsan Tirkey, Amit Rohidas, Sunita Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo and Rashmita Minz were given a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh each.

    Chhattisgarh Government bans Bursting of Firecrackers in Six of its Cities

    The Chhattisgarh Government imposed a ban on the bursting of firecrackers in six of its cities, including the state capital Raipur, ahead of the wedding season from December 1st to January 31st. According to the statement issued by the State Environment Conservation Board, the decision has been taken to control the pollution, which increases during winters due to the direction of the wind.  Besides Raipur, other cities, which have been banned from bursting firecrackers, include Bilaspur, Bhilai, Durg, Raigarh and Korba.

    China hosts Inter-Governmental Meeting of Asia and Pacific Decade for Persons with Disabilities

    The High-Level Inter-Governmental Mid-Point review meeting of Asia and Pacific Decade for Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022 was held in Beijing, China. A number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region had participated in it. The Indian delegation was led by Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Thawaarchand Gehlot. The meeting was organised by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in cooperation with China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF).

    Robin Campillo’s French film 120 Beats Per Minute, about a passionate fight against indifference towards AIDS, won the prestigious Golden Peacock award for best film at the controversy-ridden 48th International Film Festival of India. The film’s actor Nahuel Perez Biscayart won the Silver Peacock in the best actor male category. Malayalam film Take Off, which is loosely based on the evacuation of nurses from Kerala, who were stranded in Iraq’s Tikrit in 2014, won two awards at the festival’s Indian Panorama section winning Silver Peacocks for best direction (Mahesh Narayanan) and best actor female (Parvathy). Actor Amitabh Bachchan presented the Indian film personality of the year award.

    India and UK to sign MoU in Urban Transport Sector

    India and United Kingdom (UK) will soon sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the urban transport sector for cooperation in policy planning, technology. The draft of MoU was finalised by Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari and Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport of UK. It will also help in promoting digital transactions and induction of high capacity diesel and electric vehicles (EVs) in India.

    Manipur welcomes SAUBHAGYA scheme to achieve electricity in every corner

    ‘SAUBHAGYA’ scheme introduced with an aim to transform the lives, especially poorest of the poor by providing power supply to every household of the country.  Launching the scheme, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh revealed that Manipur has been doing well in terms of power generation because of new initiatives were taken by the government. Saubhagya is a scheme launched to achieve universal household electrification in all parts of the country at a cost of Rs 16,320 crore including Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) of Rs 12,320 crore from the Centre. Minister further is the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide electricity to every household of the country.

    Madhya Pradesh becomes 1st state to launch Panch Parmeshwar portal for digital gram panchayats

    Madhya Pradesh becomes the first state in the country to adopt Panch Parmeshwar portal and app system for making panchayat’s functioning more transparent easy and reliable. It is the first state in the country to adopt this system in which all acts and dealings of the gram panchayats will be displayed on the public domain. It will prove to be a milestone to implement digital and cashless dealings in even far-flung villages under the Digital India Campaign of Government of India.

    Olympics IOC bans Five more Russians for life over Sochi Doping

    Five more Russian competitors from the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including two gold medallists, have been banned for life over anti-doping rule violations by International Olympic Committee (IOC). Dmitrii Trunenkov and Aleksei Negodailo, both in the gold-medal winning four-man bobsleigh team, plus biathlon relay silver medalists Yana Romanova and Olga Vilukhina, who also won silver in the 7.5 kilometres event. Sergei Chudinov, who came fifth in the men's individual skeleton, was also disqualified for doping breaches.   

    Jet Airways and Air France-KLM tie up to Boost Traffic

    Jet Airways and Air France-KLM announced a partnership to route more traffic through Europe and on to North America, in a potential challenge to Gulf carrier Etihad Airways that is a shareholder in Jet. The agreement also includes Delta Air Lines, with which Air France KLM has an existing partnership.

    Arun Jaitley launches Paytm Payments Bank

    A new Payments Bank 'Paytm Payments Bank' was formally launched at the hands of the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Currently, India has four Payments Bank including Paytm Payments Bank. The other three operational ones are Airtel Payments Bank, India Post Payments Bank and Fino Payments Bank. A payments bank is a differentiated bank. A customer can open a savings bank account in them and have deposits of up to Rs. 1 lakh. These banks cannot, however, lend money to their customers.

    Aung San Suu Kyi stripped of Freedom of Oxford Award

    Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been stripped of the Freedom of Oxford award over her "inaction" in handling the raging Rohingya refugee crisis and turning a "blind eye to violence" in the country that forced over 600,000 people to flee to Bangladesh.  Oxford City Council in London voted unanimously to permanently remove the honour given to 72-year-old Suu Kyi in 1997.

    Amazon India in collaboration with hardware accelerator HAX and crowd-funding community Kickstarter, has announced a startup challenge 'Startup C-Cube'. The winners of the contest will have an opportunity to engage with Boeing on future partnerships. The multi-level challenge to be held in Bengaluru on December 5 gives entrepreneurs a chance to turn their ideas into 'real business opportunities'. The challenge will mark the first anniversary of Amazon India's startup initiative 'Launchpad'.

    Forty eighth Edition of International Film Festival of India Concludes

    The festival concluded with the world premiere of Indo-Argentinian co-production "Thinking of Him", directed by Pablo Cesar. The closing ceremony was attended by Goa Chief Minister, Manohar Parikkar, Union Minister Smriti Irani. The legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan was honoured with the Indian film personality of the Year Award at the glittering Closing Ceremony. The award was presented by Union Minister Smriti Irani and Akshay Kumar.  

    Badri Narain Sharma appointed as Chairman of National Anti-Profiteering Authority

    The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) appointed senior bureaucrat Badri Narain Sharma as Chairman of National Anti-Profiteering Authority. Sharma is 1985 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre. Prior to this appointment, he was an additional secretary of Department of Revenue, Finance Ministry. The Union Cabinet in November 2017 approved setting up of five-member NAA, mandated to ensure that the benefits of GST rate reduction.

    Health Ministry and ICMR launch India Hypertension Management Initiative

    The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had launched India Hypertension Management Initiative (IHMI). The IHMI aims to reduce disability and death related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in India. It also aims to strengthen CVD component of Health Ministry’s National Program for Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).

    First Edition of INSPIRE 2017 Kicked off in Jaipur

    The first edition of International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE 2017) was held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The five-day symposium is being organized by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in partnership with The World Bank, and Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE). Its main objective was to provide a common platform for energy efficiency community to discuss energy efficiency policies, emerging technologies, market transformation strategies, delivery and business-model-driven transformations.

    Shaktikanta Das named as Indias G20 Sherpa

    The Ministry of Finance appointed former economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das as India’s G20 Sherpa for the Development Track of the grouping. There are two tracks in G-20 — Finance Track and Development Track. Finance Track is managed by the secretary (economic affairs) as India’s Deputy to G-20 and the Development Track is coordinated by the Sherpa.

    Russia to help India to set up National Crisis Response Centre

    Russia agreed to assist India to set up National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC) in the country to handle disaster and other emergency situations. This was agreed during a meeting between Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Minister for Emergency Situations Vladimir Puchkov in Moscow. Both sides agreed that EMERCOM of Russia would cooperate with India in the establishment of the National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC) in India.

    Professor Hiroshi Marui conferred with 3rd ICCR Distinguished Indologist Award

    President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the 3rd Indian Council for Cultural Relations(ICCR) Distinguished Indologist Award on Professor Hiroshi Marui of Japan at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Professor Marui has spent over 40 years working on Indian philosophy and Buddhist Studies. He is President of Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies and has made a significant contribution to Indology in Japan.

    Indian contingent to BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in Ulsan, South Korea clinched 10 medals, including two golds. India’s Parul Parmar defeated Thailand’s Wannaphatdee Kamtam in the finals of the women’s singles Standing Lower (SL3). Other gold was also won by Parul Parmar, who paired with Japan’s Akiko Sugino in women’s doubles (SL 3-4) final.

    Two-day Korea Tourism Festival 2017 opens in Haryana

    A two-day Korea festival showcasing Korea's rich art, culture and heritage was inaugurated by Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) Executive Vice President Min Hong Min at the Ambience Mall, Haryana along with Joint Secretary in the Ministry Of Tourism Suman Billa. The event also saw the signing of an MOU between leading Korean companies such as LG, Hyundai, Samsung and KTO with an aim to promote the tourism by organising MICE groups to Korea for their employees and dealers.

    Punjab introduces Land Improvement Schemes Act bill to empower farmers in state

    With an aim to empower farmers, the state government gave concurrence to introduce a draft bill on the Punjab Land Improvement Schemes Act (Amendment) Bill, 2017 for insertion of new Section 14-A in the current Vidhan Sabha session for enactment. Notably, the insertion of new Section 14-A in the Punjab Land Improvement Schemes Act (Amendment) Bill, 2017 will help in laying of underground pipes of repair, renovation of existing underground pipelines through any other land holdings etc. This move will straight away benefit the farmers of the state as due to direct water supply and better infrastructure.

    BillDesk launches cryptocurrency exchange Coinome in India

    Indian online payments firm BillDesk-owned Horatio Innovations launched cryptocurrency exchange ‘Coinome’ in India offering to trade of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. The Coin one allows users to register via an instant e-KYC process by using Aadhaar number. Unlike many other cryptocurrency exchanges, Coinome is an open order book cryptocurrency exchange which enables direct deals between buyers and sellers just like conventional stocks and commodities exchanges.

    Serene Valtteri Bottas Wins Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

    Valtteri Bottas won the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from pole position, beating his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton as Formula One’s season finale petered out into a procession. The Finnish driver comfortably secured the third win of his F1 career, all this season since joining from Williams. It was his 22nd career podium and 13th with Mercedes. The third spot in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was occupied by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.  This race took place at Yas Marina Cicuit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

    Bank of Baroda Launches Digital Supply Chain Finance Solution

    State-run lender Bank of Baroda launched digital Supply Chain Finance solution which aims to accelerate working capital loan opportunities for the small and medium enterprises and large corporate clients. The new product provides a range of supply chain finance products which covers pre- and post-shipment products like dealer and vendor finance. BoB’s digital Supply Chain Finance solution has been designed to ensure faster approvals, smoother transaction processing and availability of finance to the Small and Medium Enterprises.

    Nirmala Sitharaman Elected IDSA President

    Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman elected as President of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA). The previous Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar, had resigned from the post after shifting to Goa as Chief Minister.

    Aegon Life Insurance Appoints Vineet Arora as MD and CEO

    Aegon Life Insurance announced the appointment of Vineet Arora as the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer. Vineet Arora will replace K S Gopalakrishnan. Chief People Officer of Aegon Life Insurance, Saba Adil, will serve as the interim In-charge and Principal Officer.

    Odisha Launches Rs 96-crores scheme to Increase Fish Production

    Odisha government launched a scheme to boost fish production in the state with a budgetary provision of Rs 96 crore. The 'Fish Pond Yojana' scheme was launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while inaugurating a workshop on 'Doubling of Farmer Income through Dairy and Allied Farming Practices' in Bhubaneswar. The scheme aims to create additional 2,200 hectares of freshwater aquaculture farming with 50 percent financial assistance to farmers.

    Trump Tower Launched in Kolkata

    The iconic Trump Tower comprising 140 ultra-luxury apartments launched in Kolkata and its Indian developers are expecting to garner around Rs 700 crore in sales from this project. This is the third Trump Tower to be launched in India. Realty firms Unimark Group, RDB Group and Tribeca Developers have already sold about 50 percent units since the project was soft-launched in mid-October.

    Health Ministry Wins Bronze Medal at the India International Trade Fair 2017

    Ministry of Health and Family Welfare awarded the Bronze Medal for its creative and informative display at the 37th India International Trade Fair 2017 being held at Pragati Maidan. The award was presented by Shri C R Chaudhary, Minister of State (Commerce and Industry) at a function organized to award the winners.

    One Hundred and Fifteen Backward Districts in India to be Transformed by 2022

    The Union government embarked upon a major policy initiative for the rapid transformation of 115 backward districts across the country by 2022. Senior level government officials, at the rank of Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary, have been nominated as ‘Prabhari’ officers for each district.   A detailed briefing of these officials was held under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha.

    India and Russia have signed comprehensive anti-terror pact agreement for enhancing bilateral cooperation in tackling all forms of terrorism and count. The agreement was signed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Russia’s Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev in Moscow after they held wide-ranging talks. Both countries emphasized the need to the strength of the relationship between them which has been consolidated in past 70 years in all areas. They also agreed that terrorism must be fought unitedly and there were no good or bad terrorists.

    The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) launched an intensive training program for Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) of Panchayati Raj Institutions and Master Trainers in New Delhi. It is capacity building program organized by National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) of WCD Ministry. It is for the first time ever initiative of this scale has been taken up to train EWRs who will go out and administer villages professionally.

    India and Greece sign Air Services Agreement

    India and Greece have signed Air Services Agreement (ASA) and MoU on Cooperation (MoC) in the field of New and Renewable Energy. The agreements were signed after bilateral talks between External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj and her visiting counterpart Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece Nikos Kotzias in New Delhi. ASA is signed between countries to decide on a number of flights that airlines can fly into each other’s countries.
