  • India inked seven agreements with Spain

    India and Spain signed seven agreements after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to Spain. The agreements are: Agreement for Transfer of Sentence Persons Memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Organ Transplantation MoU on Cooperation in Cyber Security MoU on Cooperation in Renewable Energy MoU on Technical Cooperation in Civil Aviation Agreement on visa waiver for holders of diplomatic passports. MoU between Foreign Service Institute and Diplomatic Academy of Spain. Spain is India's seventh largest trading partner in the European Union.

    Pentagon successfully tests ICBM defense system for first time

    United States of America for the first time successfully tested its defence system against an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). A ground-based interceptor was launched at a California air base and shot down a mock ballistic missile.  It was the first live-fire test against a simulated ICBM for the Ground-Based Missile Defense.

    ESPN World Fame 100 list - Virat Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Raina

    India captain Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, found places in this year's ESPN World Fame 100 list that made its debut last year. Kohli is placed in the 13th spot and Dhoni in the 15th, Yuvraj and Raina have been ranked 90th and 95th respectively. The list is ESPN ranking of the 100 most famous active athletes in the world.

    IIT Kharagpur researchers develop new technology to manufacture biofuel

    Scientists at IIT Kharagpur has come up with a new technology known as ‘soil-to-soil’ manufacturing technology for manufacturing cheaper, quicker and pollution-free. The Project is funded by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.   The scientists used corn, sugarcane plants, the waste part of paddy straw, bamboo, banana plant, pineapple and cotton plants to produce biofuel.

    PM Narendra Modi to lay foundation stone of bullet train project in September

    PM Narendra Modi and Japan's PM Shinzo Abe will together lay the foundation stone for the bullet train project in the month of September. Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will have the speed of 320 km per hour. The construction work would continue for another five years and mentioned that the government was committed to complete the project by the end of 2022.

    WHO’s tobacco control award for Health Minister J P Nadda

    Union Health Minister J P Nadda is set to get the World Health Organization’s (WHO) award for outstanding global leadership in tobacco control. Mr Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Health for Bhutan, Mr Tandin Wangchuk, A Member of Parliament from Bangladesh, Mr Saber Hossain Chowdhury, The Chief Executive Officer of Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Dr Supreda Adulyanon are among the others selected for the award.

    Amul inks MoU with ISRO for fodder acreage estimation

    Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for fodder acreage assessment using satellite observation and space technology. ISRO will help in identification between food crops and fodder crops at village level and also locate suitable areas of cultivable wastelands at village level for green fodder cultivation. Amul is currently procuring around 150 lakh litres of milk daily from around 35 lakh milk producer members from over 18,500 villages.

    Lionel Messi wins fourth Golden Shoe

    Barcelona striker Lionel Messi won the European Golden Shoe for a record-equaling fourth time scored 37 goals in the Spanish league. Lionel Andrés "Leo" Messi is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. He drew level with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo with the fourth honour.  

    India emerges as world’s third largest Aviation Market

    Minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha confirmed that Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN) scheme will allow India to have 200 plus airports in the next 10-15 years. There are currently 496 aircraft in operation with domestic airlines, and another 654 planes are under purchase orders. The  Aerospace and Aviation Skill Sector Council has been formed to monitor the growth of scheme development.

    New Delhi to host 3-day Indian Mobile Congress meet in September

    Union Minister for Communications Manoj Sinha announced the Mobile Congress 2017 (IMC 2017) is scheduled as a three-day event from 27th to 29th September 2017 in New Delhi. This is the first time India is all set to host its own mobile mega show. The Indian telecom market is the second-largest in the world after China. India has a total subscriber base of over 1.18 billion subscribers.  

    India ranks 120th among 131 nations in women workforce - World Bank report

    As per ‘India Development Report’ released by World Bank on May 29, 2017, India ranks 120th among 131 countries in terms of women participation in the workforce. In India, the women participation in the workforce is only 27%, which is much lower as compared to China and Brazil where it is in the range of 65 - 70%. Indian women’s workforce participation is closer to Pakistan (24.6 percent) and the Arab world (23.3 percent) while neighbouring Countries Nepal (79.9 percent) and China (63.9 percent) are leagues ahead.

    Virat Kohli only Indian cricketer in top 10 ICC rankings

    Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli becomes the only cricketer to get featured in the top 10 of the ICC Players Rankings for One day International (ODI). The top three batsmen featured in the ICC ODI Rankings are South Africa’s De Villiers (874), Australia’s David Warner (871) and Kohli (852).

    India signs 12 formal agreements with Germany

    India and Germany signed twelve memoranda of understanding (MoU) after bilateral discussion talks presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The agreements inked included nine joint declarations of intent (JDIs) and three MoU. Agreement on collaboration between the Ministry of Skill Development and Germany’s BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research); JDI between Ministry of Science and Technology and the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) for the establishment of an Indo-German Centre for Sustainability; JDI between the Ministry of External Affairs and the German Foreign Office on cooperation on cyber policy; JDI between the Ministry of Finance and BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) on Indo-German Development Cooperation; JDI between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy); JDI between the Department of Heavy Industries and BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) on cooperation in vocational education and skill development for machine tools; Agreement between Ministry of Health and BMG (Federal Ministry of Health) on cooperation in the health sector; Agreement between the AYUSH and BMG (Federal Ministry of Health) over cooperation in alternative medicine; JDI between the Ministry of External Affairs and the German Foreign Office on collaboration between Foreign Service Institutes of both the country; JDI between the Ministry of Railways and German Ministry of Transport on cooperation in railway safety. JDI between the Ministry of Urban Development and German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development on cooperation for sustainable urban development; JDI on the continuation of cooperation in the field of advanced training of corporate and junior executives from India between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy).

    Today - World No Tobacco Day

    World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31 by the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017, is "Tobacco – a threat to development". The day commemorates about the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens.

    First women’s TV channel launched in Afghanistan

    The first ever women television channel “Zan TV (or Women’s TV)” started in Kabul, Afghanistan. Founder of Zan TV is Hamid Samar. The main purpose to launch the women TV channel is to highlight the rights of Afghan women and to improve their status and ensure their equity with men in the conservative society.

    Reserve Bank of India introduces to introduce new Re 1 currency note

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon introduce currency notes of one rupee denomination. The notes, which have already been printed by the Government of India, are legal tender under the Coinage Act, 2011. The new Re.1 rupee will be pink-green in colour. The note will also feature an image of the ‘Sagar Samrat’ oil exploration rig.

    Goa state banned the thin plastic bags to tackle garbage

    The Goa State government decided to ban buying and selling of plastic bags below 50 microns. The ban will come to effect from July onwards. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar implemented the law with the fine of Rs 500 and then the fine will be subsequently raised to Rs 5,000. 

    India and Fiji Inks Agreement on Defence Cooperation

    India and Fiji signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation. Minister of Defence, Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley and the Minister of Defence and National Security of Fiji, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in New Delhi signed MoU on cooperation on defence industry, military training, humanitarian assistance & disaster management. Fiji is an extensive group of islands consisting of 332 islands located in the heart of Pacific Ocean.

    President Pranab Mukherjee recieves first copies of the books “Colour Atlas of Oral Implantology” and “Conservative Dentistry – basics”

    President Pranab Mukherjee received two copies of the book "Colour Atlas of Oral Implantology” and “Conservative Dentistry – basics". This  Atlas book majorly focuses on procedures performed by the author in the field of dental in planetology. The other book titled Conservative Dentistry – Basics, focuses on the basic fundamentals of the subject, with a lot of text, clinical pictures, and schematic diagrams for a better understanding of students.

    The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival took place from 17 to 28 May 2017, in Cannes, France.     Prasar Bharati signs MoU with Morocco's SNRT

    Government-run Prasar Bharati got into an agreement with Morocco's Societe Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Television (SNRT) to step up cooperation in the broadcasting sector. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the fifth India Morocco Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in Rabat, Morocco's capital.

    Sebastian Vettel wins 2017 Monaco Grand Prix

    German Racing driver Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) won the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix at Monaco. The second place in the race is secured by Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) and the third place by Daniel Ricciardo(Red Bull). The 2017 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One Motor race held at the Circuit De Monaco, a racing circuit composed by temporarily closed-off public roads of a city, town or village, used in motor races.

    Union Government launched new campaign 'Darwaza Band' to promote sanitation

    The government launched a new campaign called Darwaza Band for the promotion of toilet usage in the rural areas across the country. Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who leads the campaign, is proposed to be joined by Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the formal launch event to be held in Mumbai. It is an initiative of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign by the Government of India to clean the streets, roads, the infrastructure of the country's 4,041 statutory cities and towns.

    Najma Heptulla appointed as First Woman Chancellor Of Jamia Millia Islamia

    Manipur Governor and former minority affairs minister Najma Heptulla appointed as the chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, a public central university located in Delhi. Heptulla who has been a five-time member of the Rajya Sabha and its deputy chairman for sixteen years served as the minister of minority affairs.

    Union Minister launched an Anti-Ragging Mobile App of the University Grants Commission (UGC)

    Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar today launched an Anti-Ragging Mobile App introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at New Delhi. This app will work on Android system and students can log in and register their complaints instantaneously. The complaint will be sent to the concerned authorities for timely action and the action will be initiated immediately.

    PM Narendra Modi To Inaugurate Kochi Metro Railways on June 17

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Kerala's prestigious Kochi Metro project on June 17. The inaugural function of the 13-km Aluva-Palarivattom corridor will be held at Aluva in Ernakulam district.

    Indian ethical hacker Anand Prakash awarded with 3.25 lakh by Twitter last year for discovering a bug that let him tweet from any account on the microblogging platform. The bug also allowed him to post videos, photos and delete the ones already posted from any Twitter account. Last year, he was awarded Rs. 10 lakh by Facebook for detecting a bug on their systems.

    Padmalaya Nanda from Odisha is set to represent India at the Little Miss Universe beauty representation to be held in Georgia, the US from 31st May to 6th June 2017.     Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2016 for 3 Odias

    Three well-known artists from Odisha to get Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards in their respective fields.  Odissi dance Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, playwright and director Prof. Satyabrata Rout and Pala artist Laxmidhar Rout have been selected for the prestigious Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2016.     BSF officer summits Mount Everest a record 6th time

    Uttarakhand Mountaineer Border Security Force (BSF) Love Raj Singh Dharmshaktu become the first Indian to summit Mount Everest a record six times. The mountaineer, a Padma Shri awardee who works as an assistant commandant with the BSF in Dehradun. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, the premier institute of mountaineering under the ministry of defence in Uttarkashi, confirmed that Dharmshaktu is the first Indian to summit the peak six times.

    Pune city police receive FICCI Smart Policing Award 2017

    The Pune city police received the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) Smart Police Award for the year 2017. Pune Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla received the award from BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi during a programme organised by FICCI and Vivekanand International Foundation on Homeland Security in Delhi. The program focused on the use of modern technology for internal security issues.

    ISRO set to launch Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III

    The Indian Space Research Organisation will be launching the Heaviest Rocket called the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk-III) on 5th June 2017. It is 43 meters in height, 4 meters round and has a lift-off mass of 640 tonnes. The vehicles new indigenous cryogenic engine is India's largest cryogenic engine that has been designed and developed by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre of ISRO. It will help India become self-reliant for launching satellites as it would be capable of placing 4 - tonnes glass geosynchronous satellite into orbit.  GSLV-Mk III-D1 is the first developmental flight carrying the GSAT-19 satellite.

    South Korea defeat China to win 2017 Sudirman Cup

    South Korea defeated China won badminton’s Sudirman Cup 2017 for the first time in 14 years. It was held in Gold Coast Australia. Korea won by 32 points against China.

    Arun Jaitley to launch Aeronautical Test Range in Karnataka

    Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated a first-of-its-kind Aeronautical Test Range (ATR), which will be used to test the country's first unmanned aircraft, in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka. It has been planned by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and in collaboration with other Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs. The current length of the runway at the ATR is 2.2 km. It can be used for testing of bigger aircraft like AEW&CS (Airborne Early Warning &Control Systems) aircraft.

    The 13th Football Association (FA) Cup won by Arsenal with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Wembley Stadium in London, England. Arsene Wenger is the most successful football manager in the competition’s history with seven victories.  

    Indian Oil Corporation - India’s most profitable state-owned company

    Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has overtaken Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to become India’s most profitable state-owned company. IOC, India’s biggest company by turnover, posted a 70 percent hike in net profit to Rs. 19,106.40 crore in the financial year ended March 31, 2017. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries retained the crown of being India’s most profitable private company for the third year in a row, posting a net Rs. 29,901 crore in the financial year 2016-17. Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest software services exporter, with a net profit of Rs. 26,357 crore was the second most profitable private company in the country.

    C.A. Bhavani Devi becomes first Indian to win a Gold in International Fencing tournament

    India’s Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman Bhavani Devi has become first Indian to win a Gold Medal in an International fencing tournament. She participated in the sabre event of the Turnoi Satellite Fencing Championship held at Reykjavik in Iceland. In the final, she defeated Sarah Jane Hampson of Great Britain.

    Dailong village in Manipur declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site

    The Manipur government has declared Dailong village of Tamenglong district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site of the state. It has been declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site under Section 37(1) of Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

    World Health organisation confirms first three Zika virus cases in India

    According to World Health Organisation (WHO) report, India has detected first three Zika affected patients all from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The virus is transmitted to people through a bite of an infected mosquito called Aedes Aegypti, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya. There is no treatment or vaccine for Zika infection.

    World's largest telescope construction begins in chile

    Chilean President Michelle Bachelet inaugurated the construction of the world's largest optical and infrared telescope, to be located at the Paranal Observatory in the Antofagasta region. The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will become the world’s largest optical telescope which will be five times larger than the top observing instruments that are in use today. The telescope will be constructed at a 3,000 meter-high mountain in the middle of the Atacama desert. The telescope is scheduled to commence its operations in 2024.

    India-Mauritius inked Four agreements

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth inked four important agreements recently. The four agreements are - Agreement on Maritime Security; Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up of a civil services college in Mauritius; MoU was signed between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); Mauritius Oceanography Institute in marine sciences and technology. Submission of the instrument of ratification of International Solar Alliance (ISA) by Mauritius. Mauritius once again confirmed its support for the permanent seat for India at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

    EPFO to invest Rs 20,000 crore in equities in 2017-18

    Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya announced Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) will invest Rs 20,000 exchange traded funds in the financial year 2017-2018. Earlier EPFO had approved a hike in investment limit in exchange traded funds to 15 percent from 10 percent. EPFO runs three social security schemes: Employees Provident Fund Scheme, 1952, Employees Pension Scheme, 1995, and Employees Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, 1976.

  • Apple opens first official store in Southeast Asia

    Apple opened its first store in Southeast Asia at Singapore. It has already has almost 500 stores globally with more than a million visitors daily.  Apple is a California-based technology company that designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, online services, and personal computers.

    G7 Summit begins in Italy

    The two-day G7 Summit, that will focus on issues surrounding security and growth, began on 26 May in Italy. Those participating in the Taormina Summit include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, along with the Prime Ministers of Italy, Japan and the UK, Paolo Gentiloni, Shinzo Abe and Theresa May respectively. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk will be representing the European Union at the summit.

    Union Government permits DIPP to grant industrial licenses to defence manufacturers

    The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has been given back the power to grant licenses for defence manufacturing. The power to grant manufacturing license with respect to the category of arms and ammunition and defence items under the Arms Act. DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion) was first established in 1995, and then reconstituted in 2000 and merged with the Department of Industrial Development.

    India’s first electric mass transport project launched in Nagpur

    Union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari along with chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis flagged off taxi aggregator Ola's electronic vehicle (EV) services in the city. Nagpur will be the first in the country to have such a service. A battery charging station for the vehicles was also inaugurated at the airport.

    Prime Minister lays foundation Stone for AIIMS at Changsari

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of a unit of the Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari, Assam. The institute will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,123 crores as part of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana’. The seven functioning AIIMS are located in New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh.

    NASA's Juno Spacecraft Discovers Earth-Sized Storms on Jupiter

    National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA’s) Juno spacecraft has discovered Earth-sized cyclones at the poles of the Jupiter. It showed the presence of the storm systems that travel deep into the heart of the planet. Both the poles of the Jupiter were found to be covered with Earth-sized swirling storms which are densely clustered and rubbing together. Measurements of Jupiter’s magnetosphere indicate that Jupiter has a stronger magnetic field than expected which is more irregular in shape. The magnetic field on the planet is in the order of 7.766 Gauss which is about 10 times stronger than the strongest magnetic field found on Earth.
