  • Tamil Nadu: Unique Nilgiri Mountain Railway to run special train services from today till June 24

    The unique Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) in Tamil Nadu, which has been conferred Heritage status by UNESCO, will run special train services from today till 24th June this year to cater to popular demand during summer holidays. The Southern Railway has informed that the special services will be provided on Saturdays and Sundays during the period. The 28 km stretch between Mettupalayam and Coonoor is expected to provide the tourists with a lifetime experience, which will rekindle the romance of train journeys. Value-added services such as welcome kit, souvenirs, and o­n-board refreshments are also being provided on the special services. three coaches equipped with special features such as anti-corrosive metallic painting, vinyl wrapping, and soft cloth upholstery are being utilized for the NMR Summer special trains.

    China launches twin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites into space

    China successfully sent pair of twin Beidou-3MEO satellites – Beidou-30 and Beidou-31 –into space as part of its third and final stage of launching its domestic Beidou (Compass) satellite navigation system. They were launched on board Long March-3B carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in south-west China's Sichuan Province. It was a 269th mission for the Long March rocket family.

    Chief minister Shivraj promises Pucca house for all labourers in Madhya Pradesh by 2022

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan a state-wide campaign will be launched from April 1-14 for registration of unorganized labourers. Also, Pucca houses will be constructed for all laborers registered under Chief Minister’s Unorganized Labourer Welfare Scheme by the year 2022. The landholder laborers with less than 2.5-acre land can also get registered under the Chief Minister’s Unorganized Labourer Welfare Scheme on the condition that they are not income tax payees. He distributed 10 thousand 313 land ownership patterns, 1856 non-intrusive land ownership certificates and pattas of ownership rights to 200 residents of Bangla Bagicha.

    Shekhar Kapur To Head The Jury For 65th National Film Awards

    Veteran director Shekhar Kapur appointed the chairman of the central panel of the 65th National Film Awards. The central panel comprises a chairperson and 10 other members, including five regional chairpersons who head the respective regional panels. Film writer Imtiaz Hussain, known for his works in films like Astitva (2000) and Parinda (1989) will be the regional chairperson of South I panel. Mehboob, who penned the lyrics for the Hindi (dubbed) version of 1995 Tamil romantic drama Bombay appointed as the regional chairperson of South II panel.

    Long Term Capital Gains Tax To Come Into Effect From 01st April

    Several Budget proposals, including the reintroduction of the tax on long-term capital gains (LTCG) exceeding Rs 1 lakh from the sale of shares, will kick in from 01st April 2018, the beginning of the 2018-19 financial year. Besides, other tax proposals like the reduced corporate tax of 25 percent on businesses on a turnover of up to Rs 250 crore and a standard deduction of Rs 40,000 in lieu of transport allowance and medical reimbursement, will come into effect from 01st April 2018.

    NASA To Send First Mission To Study 'Heart' Of Mars

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is all set to send the first-ever mission dedicated to exploring the deep interior of Mars. Scheduled to launch on 5 May, InSight—a stationary lander—will also be the first Nasa mission since the Apollo moon landings to place a seismometer, a device that measures quakes, on the soil of another planet.  InSight or the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport mission, carries a suite of sensitive instruments to gather data.

    Union Cabinet approves MoU Between India And United Kingdom And Northern Ireland

    The Union Cabinet approved the signing of MoU between India and the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland regarding cooperation and Exchange of Information for the Purposes of Combating International Criminality and Tackling Serious Organised Crime. India and U.K. already have an agreement concerning the investigation and prosecution of crime and the tracing, restraint, and confiscation of the proceeds and instruments of crime (including crimes involving currency transfers) and terrorist funds, which was signed in 1995.

    The stock market regulator Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) allowed physical settlement of both stock options and stock futures. At present only cash settlement of derivatives is allowed.  SEBI stated stock exchanges will also have the flexibility to offer a combination of cash settlement for stock options and physical settlement for stock or physical settlement for stock options and the cash settlement for stock futures.

    Reserve Bank of India Imposes Rs 58.9 Cr Penalty On ICICI Bank

    The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 58.9 crore on ICICI Bank Limited for non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI on direct sale of securities from its Held To Maturity (HTM) portfolio and specified disclosure in this regard. The Central Bank stated this penalty has been imposed in the exercise of powers vested with the RBI under the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, taking into account failure of the bank to adhere to its directions/guidelines.

    Union Cabinet Approves Rs 4,500 Crore To Boost Development Projects In North-East

    The Union Cabinet approved Schemes of North Eastern Council (NEC) including the continuation of existing Schemes. It will boost the development projects in North-East. Four thousand five hundred crore rupees have been approved for the scheme for three years up to March 2020. The Scheme of NEC- Special Development Project will be changed to be a Central Sector Scheme with 100 percent grant.

    CCEA Approves Continuation Of Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme For Education Loans

    The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the continuation of the Credit Guarantee Fund for Education Loans Scheme and continuation and modification of Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme with a financial outlay of 6,600 crore rupees from 2017-18 to 2019-20. The scheme will cover loans for pursuing professional and technical courses to promote quality education.  CEA also approved a proposal to formulate an Integrated Scheme on school education by subsuming Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Teacher Education from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2020. An estimated allocation of 75,000 crore rupees approved for this which is a 20 percent increase over the current allocations.

    India nods to export all edible oils in bulk

    Soon export of all varieties of edible oils except mustard oil is possible except mustard oil as it will continue to be exported only in consumer packs up to 5 Kgs and with a minimum export price of US $ 900 per tonne. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Ministry of Commerce & Industry for removal of the prohibition on this export The CCEA also approved empowering the Committee, chaired by Secretary, Department of Food & Public Distribution and comprising Secretaries of Department of Commerce, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Department of Revenue, Department of Consumer Affairs and DGFT, to review the export/import policy on all varieties of edible oils and consider measures such as quantitative restrictions, prior registration, imposition of Minimum Export Price (MEP) and changes in import duties depending on domestic production and demand, domestic and international prices and international trade volumes.

    Himachal Pradesh gets 80 million dollar loan from ADB to help boost employability of state

    In a bid to help boost the employability of the state, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to give 80 million dollar loan to Himachal Pradesh. The funds given by ADB will help in the modernization of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions and improve skills ecosystem in Himachal Pradesh. Notably, Asian Development Bank and Indian government on Wednesday signed 80 million dollar loan to help modernize Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET institutions and improve the skills ecosystem in Himachal Pradesh. This fund will be initiated in strengthening the ability of educated youth of the state. The Project will help seize this opportunity by providing support in developing relevant and good quality TVET programs thereby improving employment prospects of nearly 65 thousand youths by 2022. The project will also establish a polytechnic for women, six city Livelihood Centers, and seven Rural Livelihood Centers, and upgrade 11 employment exchanges into model career Centers.

    China's 7000-kg space station Tiangong-1 to crash into Earth this week

    Breaking down into several big pieces, Chinese space station weighing over 7 tonnes will crash into our planet on or around April 1. Chinese authorities are monitoring its move, it could crash in a northern US state such as Michigan. The European Space Agency said that most of the Tiangong-1 (Heavenly Palace) will burn up even before hitting the land and the extent of human casualty is receding. The station was put into orbit in September 2011 and took part in 2 missions. Northern China, central Italy, northern Spain, the Middle East, New Zealand, Tasmania, South America and South Africa have also been identified as regions with a high chance of impact. The Heavenly Palace is expected to break into pieces as big as 100kg while making a plunge into the planet. Tiangong-1 was launched on 1 October 2011, the Chinese National Day. In September 2016, Chinese officials confirmed that they had lost control of the space lab and that it would crash into Earth sometime in the latter half of 2017. In May, China told the United Nations that the lab would reenter Earth between October and April 2018.

    Vice -President M Venkaiah Naidu officially launched the most anticipated biopic of legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao. The opening ceremony took place at Ramakrishna Horticultural studios here.   • Harsimrat Kaur Badal Inaugurates Rajasthan's First Mega Food Park In Ajmer

    In Rajasthan, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurated the first mega food park of the state at Roopangarh village near Ajmer. The Food Park is set up at an investment of Rs 113.57 crore and will benefit around 25 thousand farmers in Ajmer and neighboring districts. Center has given the 50 crore rupees subsidy for this project.  The mega food park would attract an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in about 30 food processing units in the park and to a turnover of about 500 crore rupees per annum. 

    Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai returns to Pakistan for first time since Taliban attack

    Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai returned to Pakistan for the first time since being shot by Taliban militants. She is a vocal human rights activist, was shot in the head by a gunman for campaigning for female education in 2012.  She is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. Local media reported details of the trip have been kept secret in view of the sensitivity. The trip is expected to last four days and she arrived with officials from her Malala Foundation group.

    Union Government Allows Export Of 2 Million Tonnes Of Sugar

    The union government allowed export of two million tonnes of sugar until the end of the 2017-18 marketing year, in order to clear surplus stocks and improve cash flow to millers for making payment to sugarcane farmers.  The government has also allowed export of white sugar till September 2018 under the Duty-Free Import Authorisation (DFIA) scheme, under which exporters are allowed to import sugar at zero duty within three years.

    NITI Aayog Launches Baseline Ranking Of 115 Aspirational Districts

    The NITI Aayog launched the baseline ranking for 115 aspirational districts based on 49 indicators across five sectors that include health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water resources, financial inclusion and skill development, and basic infrastructure.  This would be followed by delta ranking of these districts from May 2018 based on their incremental progress. 

    EPFO Launches Portal For Pensioners

    EPFO launched the pensioner’s portal through which all EPFO pensioners may get the details of pension-related information. The pensioner’s portal is a recently launched service where details like pension payment order number, payment order details, passbook information and other related information are available.  The enhanced “Track eKYC” facility for the convenience of members have also been launched to check the status of Aadhaar seeded against their UAN. The facility has been made available at EPFO’s website www.epfindia.gov.in

    Union Government approves amendments to National Medical Commission bill, removes provision of bridge course

    The Union Cabinet approved amendments to the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill including removing the contentious provision of Bridge Course which would have allowed practitioners of alternative medicines to pursue allopathy.  Observing the need to act strictly against unqualified practitioners, the government approved an amendment to make the punishment for any unauthorized practice of medicine severe by including a provision for the imprisonment of up to one year along with a fine extending to up to five lakh rupees. The cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi also approved that the final MBBS examination will be held as a common exam throughout the country and will serve as an exit test to be called the National Exit Test (NEXT). Thus, students would not have to appear in a separate exam after MBBS to get a license to practice and 'NEXT' would serve as the screening test for doctors with foreign medical qualifications in order to practice in India.  all and technical courses.

    Win Myint elected As new President Of Myanmar

    Myanmar's Parliament elected Win Myint as the country's new President. This comes after Myanmar's first democratically elected President Htin Kyaw resigned from the position due to health issues. Myint is considered a close aide of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and has been a speaker in the lower house since 2012.

    Indu Bhushan was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Union Government’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (ABNHPM). Bhushan, the Director General of East Asia Department, Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, Philippines appointed to the post for a period of two years.

    A Rs 5 crore insect museum with the state-of-the-art amenities was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswamy at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The museum, established at a 6,691 sqft area, is fully dedicated to insects and is first of its kind in the country. It would display insects preserved as specimens as also live ones depicting their different developmental stages, images, videos and models of their unique behavior, habits, and habitats.

    NITI Aayog's Atal Innovation Mission Signs SOI With SAP Global

    NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission announced the signing of a Statement of Intent (SOI) with SAP to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. As part of the SOI, SAP in 2018 will adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) for five years to nurture the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning among secondary school children across India. The program aims to enable students to learn advanced technology topics relevant to digital transformation and the Internet of Things, e.g. Design Thinking methodology, introduction to programming languages and experiential science learning.

    Exim Bank Extends $500 Million Loan Facility To 15-Nation Group In Africa

    The Export-Import Bank, Exim Bank announced that it will provide a USD 500 million credit facility to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to fund various development projects in western-south Africa. According to the Bank, with the signing of line of credit (LoC) agreement, the Bank till date has extended four LoCs to the Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) of West African States, taking the total value of LOCs to USD 1,000 million. The LoC of USD 500 million is an umbrella limit for financing developmental projects in 15-member countries.

    ISSF Junior World Cup- Manu Bhaker, Anmol Jointly Lift Gold

    The duo of Manu Bhaker and Anmol secured India’s seventh gold medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney, Australia. The pair won the mixed 10-meter air pistol event with a qualification world record. They finished 5.6 advantage over their closest rivals, China’s Liu Jinyao and Li Xue. Overall, India occupied the second placed with 17 medals, including seven gold. China leads the tally with 21 podium finishes, including eight gold medals.

    The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram launched ‘e-Tribes: Tribes India’. It is an initiative for digital commerce at Tribes India Outlet in New Delhi. It included the launch of e-commerce portal of TRIFED, www.tribesindia.com, and M-commerce, android app ‘Tribes India’. The Minister also launched the Tribes India banner on Snapdeal, Amazon, Paytm and GeM for marketing of Tribal Products through these e-commerce portals. With this, more than 55 thousand tribal artisans connected to TRIFED will get access to local as well as International markets.

    Ministry Of Power Joins Hands With Skill India To Support Saubhagya Scheme

    Ministry of Power partnered with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship to train the manpower in six states (Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh) for speedy implementation of its SAUBHAGYA scheme. SAUBHAGYA (Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojna) aims to achieve universal household electrification in all parts of the country in a time-bound manner. Around 4 crore households are expected to get electricity connections under the scheme. A special project under the PMKVY has also been launched in these Six States.

    Department Of Posts Launches Cool EMS Service Between India And Japan

    Ministry of Communications launched the Cool EMS Service between India and Japan. Cool EMS service is one-way service from Japan to India which allows customers in India to import Japanese food items for personal use which is allowed under Indian regulations. Initially, Cool EMS Service will be available in Delhi only. Food items will be carried by Japan Post in special cool boxes containing refrigerant to preserve the quality of the food items. All other features like track and trace, etc of Express Mail Service (EMS) will be available for Cool EMS service as well.

    India And China Agree To A Roadmap For Addressing Trade Imbalance

    The eleventh session of the China-India joint-group on Economic Relations, Trade, Science & Technology was held in New Delhi. The session was co-chaired by the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu and the Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, Zhong Shan. The two Ministers agreed to continue to take forward the initiatives identified in the Five Year Development Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and India signed in September 2014.

    Around 3 lakh houses Affordable Houses Sanctioned For Urban Poor Under PMAY

    Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs approved the construction of 3,21,567 more affordable houses for the benefit of urban poor under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) with an investment of Rs18,203  crore with central assistance of Rs4,752 crore. The approval was given in the 32nd meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) held in New Delhi. The projects were sanctioned across 523 cities in the states of Haryana, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Mizoram, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab & Goa. Haryana gets maximum (70,671) Houses while Goa got the least (60). With the participation of Goa in the 32nd CSMC, all 35 States/UTs, having urban statutory towns and cities are now covered under the PMAY(U) Mission.

    Surat Becomes 1st District To Have 100% Solar Powered Health Centres

    Gujarat's Surat district become the first district in the country to have 100 percent solar powered Primary Health Centers (PHC).  There are a total of 52 PHCs in the district and all of them are now powered by the solar system. This initiative will not only bring down the electricity bill by 40 percent but also help fight global warming.

    SWIFT announces the extension of its GPI Tracker to cover all payment instructions sent across the network, enabling GPI banks to track all their SWIFT payment instructions at all times, and giving them full visibility over all their payments activity. The Tracker, which has been available since May 2017, enables banks that have signed up to the service to track their GPI payments in real-time.

    Union Government Guarantee For IRFC Bonds

    The Ministry of Finance has approved a proposal to provide government guarantee of Rs5,000 crore in the current financial year for Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) bonds to be subscribed by Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). The guarantee fee for the amount has also been waived by the Ministry. The decision will ease the flow of borrowed funds for Ministry of Railways to undertake projects.

    Asias Largest Tulip Garden In Srinagar Opens For Visitors

    Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was opened for visitors in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. It is recognized as the Asia's largest tulip garden. This year, 12.5 lakh tulip bulbs of 48 varieties were sown in the garden by the floriculture department. Apart from the tulips, 40,000 hyacinth bulbs have also been planted.

    AAI Signs MoU With Assam Government

    The Airport Authority of India (AAI) signed an MoU with Assam government under its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) initiative for the sustainable development of human settlements at villages in Kamrup district. AAI would provide financial assistance under its CSR initiative of 4.58 crore Rupees for the Kamrup district as per the estimates prepared by the UNDP to improve the resilience of communities around Guwahati Airport.

Under this agreement, ISA shall enjoy such privileges, applicable tax concessions and immunities as are necessary for ISA’s Headquarter to independently discharge its function and programmes.

    India become the 3rd largest electricity producer in the world as its electricity production grew 34% over seven years to 2017. The country now produces more energy than Japan and Russia, which had 27% and 8.77% more electricity generation capacity installed, respectively, than India seven years ago.  Electricity production stood at 1,003.525 Billion Unit between April 2017-January 2018, according to a February 2018 report by India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), a trust established by the commerce ministry. With a production of 1,423 BU in FY 2016, India was the third largest producer and the third largest consumer of electricity in the world, behind China (6,015 BU) and the United States (4,327 BU).     Equitas Bank Ties Up With CSK

    Equitas Small Finance Bank has launched a new ‘Yellow Army Savings Account’ to increase its customer base through its association with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a franchise of the Indian Premium League (IPL). The yellow army savings account will offer an interest rate of 6% per annum for balance below Rs10 lakh and 6.5% per annum for balance above Rs10 lakh. The average quarterly balance requirement will be Rs10,000 per account.

    CCEA Approves Integrated Scheme For Development Of Silk Industry

    The Central Government took a big step in making India self-sufficient in silk production. The decisions taken by the cabinet will lead to the formation of a first-ever inter-ministerial panel to boost R&D and technology transfer in the silk sector with a 1,000 crore rupee fund. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry for the next three years from 2017-18 to 2019-20. The scheme will help to increase productive employment from 85 lakhs to 1 crore persons by 2020. The scheme aims to achieve self-sufficiency in silk production by 2022. The scheme will be implemented by the Ministry through Central Silk Board.
