  • Supreme Court now allows candidates above 25 years of age to appear in 2017 NEET exam

    The Supreme Court relaxed the age limit and allowed candidates above 25 years of age to appear in the NEET examinations 2017. The bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra also extended the last date of filling up the forms till April 5. The age limit can be fixed from the next academic year. Earlier, an eligible student above the age of 17 could apply, and there was no cap on the number of attempts. NEET Full Form : National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. NEET 2017 exam will be held for admission to MBBS/ BDS courses in Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India.

    3rd G20 Framework Working Group meeting held in Varanasi

    3rd G20 Framework Working Group meeting held in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh Important Notes:- • The focus of the meeting was to deliberate on the inclusive growth agenda of the G20 and formulation of a framework for country specific inclusive growth policies. • In the two-day meeting, officials from more than 30 countries discussed the growth strategy to raise the world GDP by 2 per cent till 2018. • Since the inception of the Framework Working Group in 2009, this is the fourth occasion India is hosting this meeting. • The meeting was co-hosted by the Union Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). •  Hosting of the event assumes significance, as the G20 group is helping India to enhance the production from the manufacturing capacity to the tune of Rs 2 lakh crore under the Make In India initiative. • Besides, the delegates were also taken to the banks of river Ganga to witness the famous Ganga Aarti. It is deliberating on global economic issues and other important development challenges. It was started in 1999 as a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in the aftermath of the Southeast Asian (Tiger economies) financial crisis.     Indian Navy’s TU-142M aircraft (Albatross) decommissioned at INS Rajali

    After dominating the skies above the seas for 29 years, the Indian Navy’s TU-142M aircraft were given a ceremonial farewell at the INS Rajali, India’s premiere Naval Air Station in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu. In the farewell flight, the TU-142M were accompanied by three Chetak helicopters, two Dorniers, one IL-38 and one Boeing P-8I. The Tu-142M maritime snooping aircraft, better known as 'Albatross' for its massive wing-span, had on several occasions picked up Chinese and Pakistani submarines operating close to Indian waters. The fuel-guzzling Tupolev142M's were the primary genuine long-range maritime reconnaissance of the Indian Navy. The TU-142MKE has a speed of around 850 kmph, and a battle range of 6,500-km.

    Kanha Tiger Reserve becomes first in India to get mascot 'Bhoorsingh the Barasingha'

    The Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has become the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot, which has been named Bhoorsingh the Barasingha.  The Barasingha or swamp deer is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. Bhoorsingh was chosen among four variations by the Madhya Pradesh forest department. Kanha Tiger Reserve, also called Kanha National Park, is one of the tiger reserves of India and the largest national park of Madhya Pradesh, state in the heart of India.It was established in 1955.

    Sachin Tendulkar launches his own social media app called '100MB cricket'

    Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar started his digital innings as a mobile phone app dedicated to him, 100MB Cricket, was launched in Mumbai. 100MB Cricket is now available for Android via Google Play, and for iOS via the App Store. The app is conceptualised and developed by JetSynthesys and has been envisioned by Sachin himself. A song entitled Cricketwalli Beat sung by Sachin with the ace singer Sonu Nigam will feature on the app on Sunday at 10pm IST.  

    South Korean Ex-President Park Geun-hye - Arrested in Corruption Probe

    Park Geun-hye, the former South Korean president, has been arrested and jailed over a high profile corruption scandal that has already seen her ousted from office and prompted early elections. Ms Park, 65, was immediately driven to a detention centre in the south of the capital, Seoul. Political crisis:- Park Geun-hye’s presidency reached a crisis in October 2016, after it was revealed she was being secretly advised by a female friend, Choi Soon-sil. Ms Choi, dubbed “Korea’s Rasputin”, guided President Park on everything from clothes to policy on North Korea. She is currently facing criminal charges of using her influence to extort millions of dollars from businesses. The Korean parliament voted to impeach Park Geun-hye in December 2016. She was arrested by South Korean prosecutors in March 2017.

    Interest rates on small savings deposits including PPF cut by 0.1%

    The government has lowered interest rates by 0.1% on small savings instruments, such as Kisan Vikas Patra, Senior Citizens Savings Scheme, Public Provident Fund (PPF) and Sukanya Samriddhi Account, effective from April 1, 2017. PPF will fetch an interest rate of 7.9% starting from April 1, 2017, which was earlier 8%. In similar fashion, Five-Year Senior Citizens Savings Scheme at 8.4%, Five-Year National Savings Certificate at 7.9% and Kisan Vikas Patra will come down to 7.6%. Reason: Due to overall decline in interest rate in the financial system, the aforesaid interest rates have been reduced. Union Finance Minister: Arun Jaitley (Since 26 May 2014)

    Asian Hockey Awards - Indian forward SV Sunil named 'Player of the Year 2016'

    India's Ace forward SV Sunil has been named as the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) 'player of the year 2016'. Sunil has been honoured in the senior men’s section. While Harmanpreet was named the 'promising player of the year 2016'. He has been honoured in the Junior men’s section. Harmanpreet had a stupendous 2016 with the Indian junior men's team winning the Junior World Cup in Lucknow. He was also part of the senior men's team at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the FIH Champions Trophy in London where India won a historic silver medal. Sunil, on the other hand, played a vital role in India's successful outing at FIH Champions Trophy in London last year where he led the forwardline. Considered to be one of the fastest men on the pitch in the world, Sunil has also served as the team's vice-captain.

    Hyderabad, India's first ‘Giga-enabled’ city - by ACT Fibernet

    ACT Fibernet announced the launch of 1Gbps (gigabits per second) wired broadband internet services in Hyderabad. This makes the `City of Pearls’ India’s first `Giga City’. In Hyderabad, the 1 Gb plan will be offered at Rs 5,999 per month. The services were launched by Telangana IT minister K T Rama Rao.     SpaceX becomes historic first to re-fly used rocket Falcon 9

    SpaceX successfully re-launched one of its Falcon 9 rockets into orbit and had it return to Earth safely.     Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura states join UDAY Scheme

    Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura joined the Ujwal DISCOM  Assurance Yojana (UDAY) for operational improvement of the Power Utility and for the revival of debt-stressed discoms, taking the total number of states under the scheme to 26. An overall net benefit of approximately Rs 4,178 crore, Rs 309 crore and Rs 810 crore would accrue to the states of Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura respectively, by opting to participate in UDAY, by way of cheaper funds, reduction in AT&C (aggregate technical and commercial) and transmission losses, interventions in energy efficiency, etc during the period of turnaround.     Hydrocarbon project in Neduvasal - Govt signs contract

    The Government of India signed a contract for the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) Bid 2016 with GEM Laboratories for extracting Hydrocarbons at Neduvasal, a village in Pudukkottai district, in Tamil Nadu. The contract was one of the many signed for 31 areas under the DSF Bid Round 2016. The estimated total revenue would be approximately Rs 46,400 crore, of which royalty collection and Government's revenue share is expected to be around Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 9,300 crore, respectively. It is also estimated that employment for about 37,500 persons would be generated through these fields.

    'Chennai-Nashri Tunnel' as Asia's longest bi-direction road tunnel

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation Asia’s longest bi-directional road tunnel 'Chennai-Nashri Tunnel' on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on 2 April, which will cut down travel time between the two cities by two hours. 10 facts about the project:-  1. The length of the tunnel is 9.28 km. The world’s longest highway tunnel is 24.51 km and is in Norway. 2. It will reduce the travel distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 30.11 km, which will help save fuel worth Rs 27 lakh daily. 3. Built on the lower Himalayan range at a height of 1,200 metres, it will cut travel time between the two cities by at least two hours. 4. The project cost is Rs 3,720 crore, Rs 1,200 crore more than the initial estimated cost. 5. Work on the tunnel system started on May 23, 2011. 6. The main tunnel is 13 metre in diametre, the parallel escape tunnel is 6 metre diametre and are connected by 29 cross passages at 300-metre gap. 7. The tunnel boasts of an integrated system that will control communication, ventilation, video surveillance, power supply, SOS call box, fire fighting and incident detection and an FM signal repeater. 8. It is part of a 286-km-long four-lane project on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. 9. It is meant to avoid stretches of National Highway 44 prone to avalanches and landslides. Patnitop, Kud, and Batote will be bypassed now. 10. The speed limit in the tunnel will be 50km/hour and headlights will have to be low beam.

    ICC's bid for cricket's inclusion in 2024 Olympics

    The ICC (International Cricket Council) is set to bid for inclusion of cricket, in its Twenty20 format, in the 2024 Olympic Games. ICC will take a decision in June. If ICC’s bid is accepted by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), cricket will return to the Olympics fold for the first time in 124 years. Cricket last appeared at the 1900 Paris Olympics when only two teams - Great Britain and France - were involved. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose between 2024 bid cities Paris and Los Angeles at a meeting in Lima in September, with new sports also under consideration.     El Salvador - first country to ban all metal mining

    El Salvador, Central America’s smallest nation, has become the first country in the world to ban metals mining nationwide following a long-running dispute with a Canadian-Australian company over an environmentally questioned gold project. The bill was passed by 69 votes. Robin Broad, a professor of development at the American University in Washington and supporter of the ban, said only 43 ballots were needed for it to pass. The law also bans the use of toxic cyanide and mercury for mining. More than 90% of El Salvador’s surface waters are estimated to be polluted by toxic chemicals, heavy metals and waste matter.     US astronaut breaks Sunita Williams’s spacewalk record

    57 year old, US astronaut Peggy Whitson is set to surpass Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams’ record for the most spacewalks by a female astronaut when Whitson goes on her eighth spacewalk, recently. Williams has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions. With 50 hours and 40 minutes, she also holds the record total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut.

    TN becomes First state to win all BCCI senior trophies

    Tamil Nadu has become the first state to win all BCCI senior trophies after winning the Deodhar Trophy at Vizag. Tamil Nadu beat India 'B' by 42 runs to become the first state side to win the three-team one-day tournament. Tamil Nadu state, which has won the Ranji Trophy in the year 1987-88, also won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the year 2017, making the state five-time winners in the tournament.   • Lok Sabha passes Finance Bill 2017 without including Rajya Sabha’s proposed amendments

    The Parliament passed the Finance Bill 2017, even as the Lok Sabha rejected the amendments to the Bill suggested by the Rajya Sabha. Key amendments in the Finance Bill 2017: >  The Centre has included amendments to the Income Tax Act, which gives more power to the tax officials. The I-T department will not be required to disclose reasons for carrying out I-T raids or check. > The Finance Bill also entails unlimited and anonymous corporate funding for political parties. Earlier, the upper limit for donations was capped, which has been removed now. > Also, the donations will remain anonymous. Donations from foreign entities too will not be disclosed. > The Bill has also amended the Representation of People’s Act, which governs election. > Another amendment merges various tribunals (quasi-judicial bodies), which examine appeals of regulatory decisions. The government can now provide for qualification, appointments, removal, etc. for the tribunal members – this means the government will have arbitrary power over the tribunal. > The Bill also makes Aadhaar mandatory for getting a PAN card and for filing income-tax returns. > The Bill also reduced cash transaction limit to Rs 2 lakh from earlier Rs 3 lakh.     Paytm, The First E-Commerce Company To Become ASCI Member

    Pashmina Art Exhibition releases book '6 Times Thinner'

    Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N.Vohra inaugurated Mr. Babar Afzal’s “Pashmina Art Exhibition” and released his book “6 TIMES THINNER”. This event was organized by the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art Culture and Languages (JKAACL) at the Abhinav Theatre. Appreciating the innovative idea of using pashmina fabric as a medium to paint, weave and embroider, the Governor complimented Mr. Afzal for his ingenuity in meaningfully and aesthetically highlighting the pashmina goat and its rare soft wool which is used for producing valuable shawls and garments, prized the world over.     Sima Kamil - First woman to head major Pakistani bank

    Sima Kamil is appointed as the new president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the United Bank Limited (UBL), one of the Pakistan largest banks. She is the first woman to head a major commercial bank in Pakistan. She will take charge on June 1, 2017. Kamil has a business degree from Kingston University in the UK and an MBA from the City University, London. Kamil, who moved recently to UBL, had been leading Habib Bank Ltds (HBL) Branch Banking since 2011 and oversaw a large expansion of HBLs branch network. She dealt with HBLs retail, consumer, small and medium enterprises, and rural banking initiatives, as well as the banks wealth management division as head of the HBL Asset Management Company Ltd.     Indian Army Chief receive the honorary General title of Nepal Army

    Indian Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat was conferred the title of honorary general of the Nepal Army by Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Gen Rawat was honoured at a special ceremony at the president's official residence 'Sheetal Niwas' in Kathmandu.  She handed over a sword, an insignia and a certificate with regard to the honorary title to Gen Rawat. The practice follows a six-decade-old tradition of decorating army chiefs of each other's country with the honorary title. Commander-in-Chief Gen Kodandera Madappa Cariappa was the first Indian Army chief to be decorated with the title in 1950.

    Tripartite MoU signed by AAI, DRDO & Jharkhand Govt. for Deoghar Airport development

    The Airports Authority of India (AAI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Government of Jharkhand signed a tripartite MoU for development of Deoghar Airport in Deoghar district of the Jharkhand state. The existing Deoghar Airport will be developed for operations of A-320 and C-130 aircraft. The Government of Jharkhand has acquired 600.34 acres of land which will be handed over to AAI apart from the existing 53.41 acres Deoghar Airport land. DRDO, Government of Jharkhand and AAI will provide INR 200 crore, INR 50 crore, respectively, to develop, operationalise and maintain the airport. The time frame given to develop and operationalise the Deoghar Airport is two years.     Cyclone Debbie Strikes Australia’s Coastline

    A powerful cyclone came ashore on Australia’s northeastern coast, the most intense storm to strike the country in several years. Cyclone Debbie made landfall on the Queensland coast south of the town of Bowen, which lies about 300 miles southeast of Cairns. The storm hit land with winds in excess of 120 mph.     Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan suspended for a year by PCB

    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended Mohammad Irfan for a year and also fined the tall fast bowler one million rupees ($9,500) for violating the sport's anti-corruption code during the Pakistan Super League T20. The 34-year-old, Irfan failed twice to report approaches by bookmakers linked to spot-fixing.     Jeff Bezos - Now the World's Second Richest Person

    Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has become the world’s second-richest person, adding $1.5 billion to his net worth at $75.6 billion yesterday, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. Bezos’ fortune spiked a day after Amazon announced plans to purchase Dubai-based e-commerce platform According to Bloomberg, his net worth increased by $10.2 billion this year. Aside from Amazon, Bezos also owns Washington state-based aerospace company Blue Origin, which plans to offer space tourism.     Chennai’s Srinath Narayanan - India’s 46th Grandmaster

    Chennai’s Srinath Narayanan is set to become India’s 46th Grandmaster after he defeated Spanish GM David Anton Guijarro at the ongoing Sharjah Masters 2017 chess tournament. The 23-year-old, who had become India’s youngest FIDE-rated player in 2002 when he was just eight, also finished as joint winner in the Under-12 World Championship in 2005 in France. Srinath became an International Master at the age of 14 and crossed the 2500 Elo rating a few months back.

    For the first time, India becomes net exporter of power

    India has become a net exporter of electricity during the April-February period this fiscal for the first time. During the current year 2016-17, India has exported around 5,798 million units of electricity to Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. This is 4 percent higher than what India bought from Bhutan, which has been a steady supplier of hydro-electricity to the country since the eighties.     India and Bavaria - Co-Operation in Water Sector

    Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti suggested the formation of a joint group to identify areas of co-operation in water sector. This was stated after her talks with Bavaria’s Minister of Environment and Consumer Protection Ulrike Scharf. Bavaria, a Free State in Germany, has a rich experience of successfully cleaning the River Danube in Germany and India may benefit from their experience.

    India's First-ever Integrated Automation Aviation Meteorological Systems (IAAMS) inaugurated

    The first-ever ‘Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS)’ was inaugurated at INS Rajali by Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff. The IAAMS is an ambitious project of the Indian Navy to modernise the meteorological infrastructure of the nine Naval Air Stations (NAS). The project will give a major fillip to aviation safety, through automation of weather monitoring process. INS Rajali at Arakkonam was identified for setting up this sophisticated system on a ‘Test Bed’ site, where the complete integrated system has been tested for its reliability, performance and functioning. It is equipped with the state of the art Meteorological Sensors viz., Radar Vertical Wind Profiler, Transmissometer, Ceilometer and Automatic Weather Observation System.

    FIFA suspends Lionel Messi for four World Cup qualifiers

    Soccer megastar Lionel Messi (Argentina) has been suspended for four international matches by FIFA for insulting an assistant referee, effective immediately. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee - in application of articles 77 a) and 108 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) – has reached a decision in relation to the case of Lionel Messi following an incident that occurred during the match between Argentina and Chile as part of the qualifying competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. Lionel Messi has been found guilty of violating art. 57 of the FDC for having directed insulting words at an assistant referee. As a result, Messi will be suspended for four official matches and sanctioned with a fine of $10,166.   • Unnati Credit Card launched by SBI to spread credit inclusion

    'SBI Card' launched the Unnati Credit Card to spread credit inclusion. Launched by: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, Piyush Goyal in New Delhi. Features of Unnati:- •    The Unnati would have no annual fees (Rs 499/year) for the initial four years and the credit card will be offered through 20,000-plus State Bank of India (SBI) branches. •    The card is targeted at all SBI customers, including the Jan Dhan account-holders across the country. And, It is primarily tailored for new users of credit cards, those who do not have a credit history. •    Any SBI customer with a balance of at least Rs 25,000 in the savings account is eligible for the Unnati credit card. •    The Easy Bill Pay facility of the card can be used to pay electricity, telephone, mobile and other utility bills. •    The card is accepted in over 24 million outlets across the globe, including 3,25,000 outlets in India. •    With SBI Card Unnati, add-on cards will be provided to the customer's parents, spouse, children or siblings above the age of 18.     IAF launches bidding for aviation turbine fuel

    A web-based e-billing or the 'Aviation Turbine Fuel Digital Issue and Payment' (ATF DIP) has been developed by Indian Air Force (IAF) for the speedy accounting and clearance of aviation fuel bills of Oil PSUs. A total of 604 tonnes of currency notes was transported by the Indian Air Force in 33 sorties across the country after the government's decision to demonetise high-value notes last year. The e-billing module christened as 'ATF DIP' was unveiled by Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa and it will be implemented from April 1.

    Army Releases Book titled 'Home of the Brave'

    Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Bipin Rawat released the book 'Home of the Brave' on the history of Indian Army's Counter Insurgency Force, the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), in New Delhi. The book is authored by Mr Nitin A Gokhale, Defence & Security Analyst and Brig S K Chatterji (Retired). About the Book 'Home of the Brave':- 'Home of the Brave’ traces the early history of the RR, its organization, including its raising and subsequent deployment in Punjab, the North East and in Jammu & Kashmir. The RR, a formidable Counter Insurgency Force, has won many laurels in the operations. In addition to fulfilling its primary mandate of securing the Nation, the Force has also conducted several softer measures to win hearts and minds of the people- a critical and valuable practice that the Indian Army has embraced. The book also reflects upon the role of the RR in strengthening the professionalism of the Indian Army and military ethics and values throughout its rank and file. 'Home of the Brave' will serve as an authentic record of achievements of the RR for all the Army units and Army training institutions. For defence policy planners, research scholars and military historians, this book provides factual and well chronicled information.

    South African Anti-Apartheid Activist, Ahmed Kathrada Dies at 87

    Veteran Indian-origin South African anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Kathrada, who was one of Nelson Mandela's closest aides, died at a hospital in Johannesburg, at the age of 87. Kathrada was among those tried and jailed alongside Mandela in the Rivonia trial in 1964, which drew worldwide attention and highlighted the brutal legal system under the apartheid regime. Kathrada spent 26 years and three months in prison, 18 of which were on Robben Island. After the end of apartheid, he served from 1994 to 1999 as parliamentary counsellor to President Mandela in the first African National Congress (ANC) government. Apartheid:- Apartheid was a legalised system of discrimination against non-white people introduced in South Africa in 1948.

    Eminent jurist and Former Solicitor General T. R. Andhyarujina passes away

    Eminent jurist and senior advocate T. R. Andhyarujina passed away in Mumbai. Andhyarujina, 84, also served as Solicitor General during 1996-98. Prior to that he was the Advocate General of Maharashtra from 1993 to 1995. He specialized in the field of constitutional law, human rights, public law and commercial law. He was the chairman of the committee on Banking Laws appointed by Govt of India in 1998. He was part of the team of constitutional law expert H M Seervai in his initial days as a lawyer and witnessed from close-quarters the history-defining hearings in the The Kesavananda Bharati Case.

    Indian-origin British Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha has been honored with the Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema. Chadha, whose films include Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice, received the award from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon. The event was organized by the British Sikh Association. The High Commissioner of India to the UK, Y K Sinha, who was the Guest of Honour, was also present on the dais. Chadha’s latest film, "Viceroy’s House" tells the true story of the final five months of British rule in India and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

    Truecaller announced a strategic agreement to integrate Google Duo, a high quality video calling service, within the Truecaller app. This will add a crucial communications layer that strengthens the value of Truecaller’s wildly popular dialer, caller ID, and spam blocking app already used by more than 250 million people globally.     ICICI Bank partners Truecaller for UPI-based mobile payment

    ICICI Bank announced a partnership with mobile app firm Truecaller for a new UPI-based mobile payment service. The new feature called as Truecaller Pay, it will allow users of the app to instantly create a UPI id, send money to any UPI id or a mobile number registered with the BHIM app. It will also enable users to recharge their mobile number from within the Truecaller app itself.     Parliament passes Mental Healthcare Bill, 2016; decriminalises suicide

    The Mental Healthcare Bill 2016, that provides for mental healthcare and services for persons with mental illness, and also decriminalises suicide, secured parliamentary approval with the Lok Sabha's assent to the legislation. The bill, passed by the Rajya Sabha in August 2016, ensures every person shall have a right to access mental health care and treatment from mental health services run or funded by the appropriate government. It also assures free treatment for such persons if they are homeless or poor, even if they do not possess a Below Poverty Line card. One of the clauses in the bill decriminalises suicide, stating that a person who attempts suicide should be presumed to have severe stress, and shall not be punished. As per the bill, it will be government's duty to provide care, treatment and rehabilitation to a person, having severe stress and who attempted to commit suicide, to reduce the risk of recurrence of any attempt. The bill also provides that a person with mental illness will have the right to make an advance directive that states how he she wants to be treated for the illness and nominate a representative. An estimated 6-7% of the country’s population suffers from some kind of mental illness, while 1-2% has an acute condition. SALIENT FEATURES OF THE MENTAL HEALTHCARE BILL:- 1) Decriminalising attempt to commit suicide 2) Bans use of electric shock therapy for treating children with mental illness 3) Permits conditional use of shock therapy on adults, after being given anaesthesia, muscle relaxants 4) Emphasises on ensuring no intrusion of rights and dignity of people with mental illness Union Minister for Health and Family Welfares: J P Nadda

    R. Ashwin receives the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy

    India's off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin received the Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016 as well as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2016 from former India captains and ICC Cricket Hall of Famers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. During the voting period, which ran from September 14, 2015, to September 20, 2016, the 30-year-old from Chennai played eight Tests in which he took 48 wickets and scored 336 runs. Ashwin also claimed 27 wickets in 19 Twenty20 Internationals. Ashwin is the third Indian, and the 12th player overall to win the award. While Rahul Dravid had won the title in 2004, Sachin Tendulkar was presented with the same in 2010. Ashwin had finished 2015 as the number-one ranked Test bowler in the world, a position he twice reclaimed in 2016. Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy:- The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy is a cricket trophy awarded annually by the International Cricket Council to its chosen world player of the year. It was first awarded in 2004 to Rahul Dravid. The trophy is named after former West Indies cricket captain Sir Garfield Sobers, whose name was chosen by a panel consisting of Richie Benaud, Sunil Gavaskar and Michael Holding. The award was judged by a voting academy, which was entirely independent of the ICC and in which members of the media from all the 10 Test-playing countries were eligible to vote.
