  • Google awarded 72 lakh for finding bugs in Pixel phone

    Google awarded nearly 72 lakh to researcher Guang Gong for finding bugs in its Pixel devices. The exploit chain consisted of two bugs which together could inject arbitrary code into system server by accessing a malicious URL in Chrome. Around 67 lakh of the reward was given from Google's Android Security Rewards program, the highest in the program's history.

    Tenth Global Forum for Food and Agriculture held at Berlin

    The 10th edition of Global Forum for Food & Agriculture was held in Berlin, Germany from 18th -20th January 2018. The theme of this year’s event is “Shaping the future of livestock – sustainably, responsibly, efficiently”. The Indian delegation to the event is led by Union Minister of State (MoS) for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The event was organized by Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMEL) in cooperation with GFFA Berlin e.V., Senate of Berlin.

    Central Government and CII Ink MoU for Development of Logistics Sector

    A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Government of India and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the presence of Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu to enhance import and export performance. The Centre has entrusted the task of integrated development of the logistics sector to the Department of Commerce.

    Elections Dates in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland Declared

    The Election Commission of India, Achal Kumar Joti announced dates for elections to the Assemblies of Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland. The CEC announced the polling for legislative assembly elections in Tripura on 18 February, while Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to vote on 27 February. All the three states have 60 seats each in their assembly. The tenure of the Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland Assemblies expire on March 6, March 13 and March 14, 2018, respectively. The State elections to Karnataka, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are also due this year.

    India Ratings Projects Economic Growth at 7.1 Next Fiscal

    India Ratings and Research have projected the country’s economic growth to improve to 7.1 percent in 2018-19 from 6.5 percent in 2017-18, buoyed by robust consumer demand and low commodity prices. In its outlook for 2018-19, according to the agency, there will be a gradual pickup in growth momentum owing to structural reforms like GST and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code in place. The projection is a tad lower than 7.4 percent growth estimated by Asian Development Bank and International Monetary Fund for next fiscal.

    NPPA fixes retail price of 30 drug formulations

    Drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) fixed retail price for 30 drug formulations, including those used for the treatment of Diabetics, bacterial infections, and high blood pressure. NPPA is an independent body under Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. It was set up in 1997. Its mandate is to fix/review. Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the country’s population.

    Maharashtra becomes first state to unveil Public Cloud Policy

    Maharashtra became the first state in the country to unveil Public Cloud Policy that virtually mandates state government departments to shift their data storage. The State Government had formed a four-member committee to draft policy framework on cloud usage. The policy will result in additional private sector investments worth the US $2 billion for cloud industry as the government is one of biggest creators.

    Union Government planning to set up of Cyber Warrior Police Force to tackle internet-related crimes

    The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) decided to set up Cyber Warrior Police Force (CWPF) and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to tackle internet-related crimes such as cyber threats, child pornography, and online stalking. The CWPF is likely to operate under National Information Security Policy and Guidelines wing of MHA’s CIS division. The State cybersecurity cells will form the foundation of centralized CWPF.

    Israel PM Addresses India-Israel Business Summit in Mumbai

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Mumbai during the final leg of his visit to India. Mr. Netanyahu addressed the India-Israel Business Summit at the iconic Taj Mahal hotel in south Mumbai. Later in the day, Mr. Netanyahu will attend the ‘Shalom Bollywood’ event at the Taj hotel. A monthly magazine titled ‘Namaste Shalom’ will also be launched to mark Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Mumbai visit. The magazine is planned to carry forward the great initiative of Mr. Modi and Mr. Netanyahu to strengthen India-Israel relations.

    Virat Kohli named as Captain of ICCs Test and ODI Teams of the Year

    Virat Kohli was named the captain of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test and One-Day International (ODI) teams of the year that included four other Indians as well. Kohli scored 2,023 runs at 77.80, including eight centuries and three half-centuries in 18 matches during the qualification period. He surprisingly pipped Australian skipper Steve Smith for the ICC’s Test team captaincy. The Test team also comprises Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin. Kohli, the Winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and ODI Cricketer of the Year awards, was chosen to lead the ICC ODI team, which includes Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah as the other two Indians.

    HDFC Bank Becomes 1st Indian Bank to Cross Rs5 trillion Market Capitalisation

    India’s most-valued lender HDFC Bank Limited crossed Rs5 trillion capitalization action for the first time, making it only the third Indian company to achieve this milestone. In intraday trade, the stock touched a fresh record high of Rs1,53.75 on the BSE, up 3.31% from its previous close. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) are the other two companies which crossed market capitalisation of Rs5 trillion.

  • North and South Korea Agree to Jointly March Under Unification Flag in Winter Olympics

    North and South Korea have agreed to march together under a single unified Korea flag at Winter Olympics in the South. They also agreed to field a joint women’s ice hockey team after rare talks at the truce village of Panmunjom. These are the first high-level talks between the two Koreas in more than two years. The Games will take place in February 2018 in Pyeongchang in South Korea.

    India Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable ICBM Agni-V

    India test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-V inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), which has a strike range of over 5,000km. The ICBM can reach the northern-most parts of China. Agni-V was last tested in December 2016, in what was described as the fourth and final experimental test of the three-stage ICBM.

    Bank of Baroda Partners with Invoicemart as a TReDS Partner

    Digital invoice discounting marketplace - Invoicemart has tied up with state-run lender Bank of Baroda to discount invoices for MSMEs. Buyers and sellers registered in the marketplace will now be able to access funding from Bank of Baroda. Invoicemart is a joint venture between Axis Bank Ltd and junction services ltd. Bank of Baroda had recently announced that it was stepping up its focus on supply chain financing. TReDS is an online mechanism that helps MSMEs unlock working capital without the hassle of applying for loans.

    India Attends its 1st SCO Military Cooperation Meeting in Beijing

    India took part in a two-day meeting of the international military cooperation departments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Beijing, China. An Indian delegation was led by Major General Ajay Seth. The meeting discussed issues of practical cooperation among SCO nations. This is the first meeting attended by India in the field of defense cooperation under the SCO framework. India and Pakistan were admitted in 2017 into the grouping in which China plays an influential role. 

    Odisha CM Launches Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana

    Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the ‘Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Jojana’ (MMKSJ) – an assistance scheme for Artists in the state. Around 50,000 artists will be benefited from this. The Union Government decided to give Rs 1,200 per month as artist assistance. The CM confirmed that the government has also changed the eligibility criteria for availing MMKSJ. Under the new scheme, a male artist can avail assistance after attaining the age of 50 years instead of the existing 60 years. The age criteria for female artists have been reduced to 40 years from 50 years.

    Actor Sudhir Dalvi Gets Janakavi P Sawlaram Award

    Actor Sudhir Dalvi honored with the Janakavi P Sawlaram award at a function held in Mumbai. The award is jointly given by the Thane Municipal Corporation and the Janakavi P Savlaram Kala Samiti. Well-known dancer Jaishree T was bestowed with the Ganga Jamuna award, which is instituted in memory of a popular song written by Sawlaram. Mr. Dalvi featured on the famous TV show "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" and other Hindi serials.

    Vijay Kumar appointed as MD and CEO of NCDEX

    Market regulator The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved the appointment of Vijay Kumar as Managing Director and CEO of the country’s largest agri-commodity bourse NCDEX. Mr. Kumar is a former chief business officer at NCDEX. The exchange's selection committee had picked his name for the MD and CEO's post from a list of 11 candidates.

    India and Sri Lanka Sign 4 Agreements for Collaboration in ICT Sector

    India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements for collaboration in the Information and communication technology (ICT) sector, setting up of an e-office system and connecting of National Knowledge Network (NKN) for collaboration among universities and academics. With the move, Sri Lanka has become the first country to be connected to India’s NKN through a Gigabyte optical fiber network. The MoU for cooperation was signed by Union minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad with his Sri Lankan counterpart, during his visit to Colombo.

    Ministry of Petroleum Launches Saksham 2018 Campaign

    Saksham (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav) is an annual flagship event of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India. The event focuses on the active involvement of the Oil & Gas PSUs along with other stakeholders like State Governments, for creating focused attention on fuel conservation through people-centric activities. The month-long campaign aims to intensify efforts for making citizens aware of the conservation and effective utilization of petroleum products.

    IWDRI-2018 Concluded Successfully in New Delhi

    The two-day International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (IWDRI) successfully concluded in New Delhi. It had set the stage for taking the dialogue on resilient infrastructure forward at the global level. The Workshop was organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) jointly with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). MoS (Home) Shri Kiren Rijiju delivered the Valedictory Address. The workshop was inaugurated by the Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh.

    Union Government ends Haj subsidy

    The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs decided to end Haj subsidy from this year as a part of its policy to empower minorities with dignity and without appeasement. This decision was taken based on the recommendations of Afzal Amanullah Committee and May 2012 Supreme Court order. The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city for Muslims. It is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out.

    NITI Aayog launches first course under GIAN Program on Sustainable Urban Planning

    The NITI Aayog launched the first course on Sustainable Urban planning using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) at IIT Kanpur. This is the first course conducted under Global Initiative on Academic Network (GIAN) Program of Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. The course aims to give participants state-of-the-art remote sensing and GIS skills to allow them managing rapidly changing the urban environment of Indian cities. Its prime focus is on issues such as water resource management, water pollution, and water treatment facilities.

    TCS bags over $690 million deal from M&G Prudential

    India’s largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) signed an over GBP 500 million (USD 690 million) deal with M&G Prudential, the UK and European savings and investments business of Prudential plc.  Under the contract, TCS will digitally transform M&G Prudential’s business and deliver enhanced service for its UK savings and retirement customers. “The value of this agreement exceeds GBP 500 million (USD 690 million) over 10 years and covers the support of over 4 million customer policies.

    Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho retires from Football

    Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho formally confirmed his retirement from football, more than two years since his last appearance as professional reports in Brazil. The 37-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona star, a key member of the Brazil side which won the World Cup in 2002, last played in 2015 during a brief stint with Fluminense. Ronaldinho’s career began with Gremio in Porto Alegre, his hometown, before he emerged as a star with French giants PSG. He then spent five years with Barcelona between 2003 and 2008, helping the Catalans win the Champions League in 2006, after being awarded the Ballon d'Or in 2005.

    ISRO releases 1st image taken by recently launched satellite

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) released the first image captured by its Cartosat-2 series satellite which was launched from Sriharikota on January 12. The image shows a part of Indore, Madhya Pradesh with the Holkar Cricket Stadium in the center. The Earth-observing satellite, weighing 710 kg, was successfully launched with 30 others aboard a PSLV-C40 rocket, completing 100 Indian satellites in orbit.

    Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu announces industrial development scheme

    Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu announced an exclusive industrial development scheme to expand and promote business activities in the state. Winding up the discussion on the Budget for 2018-19 in the Assembly, Drabu said that under the scheme, to be rolled out soon, central capital investment subsidy of 30 percent would be provided for plant and machinery and buildings for hotels. The first time that such benefits are being extended to the services sector. Around three per cent interest subsidy for five years and 100 percent insurance subsidy under the scheme. All new industrial units in manufacturing and services sector operational in the state will be eligible for various benefits under this scheme.

    China builds World's Biggest Air Purifier

    China constructed a 330-foot tall air purifying tower dubbed the "world's biggest air purifier". The tower, which is being tested by researchers, has produced more than 10 million cubic meters of clean air since it was launched. The air purification system works through greenhouses covering about half the size of a soccer field around the base of the tower.

    Donald Trump awarded bravery medal for scolding Pakistan over terrorism

    Afghanistan residents awarded Donald Trump a bravery medal for rebuking Pakistan over its failure in curbing terrorist havens.  As per local media reports, the medal has been forged using funds collected by Afghans from the Logar province worth 45,000 Afghanis ($645) and consists of 15 grams of gold. The US Ambassador in Kabul John R Bass promised that he will soon hand over the medal to the US President. The Syed Farhad Akbari, a community leader in the province, said that more than 300 people at an informal “jirga,” or council, of concerned citizens, agreed to award the medal to the US president.

    Third Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi

    The third edition of the geo-political conference – Raisina Dialogue was held in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). The theme of the conference for this year is ‘Managing Disruptive Transitions: Ideas, Institutions, and Idioms’.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Project Commencement of Rajasthan's first Oil Refinery in Barmer

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project commencement of the Rajasthan Refinery at Pachpadra in Barmer district. This is the first oil refinery in the state. The 43,000 crore rupee project is a joint venture between HPCL and the Rajasthan Government.  The refinery is expected to be operational in 4 years and the state will have an additional income of 34,000 crore rupees from it. The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

    Indian Oil signed agreement with 2 Israeli Firms

    Indian Oil Corporation signed Letters of Intent (LoI) with Phinergy, an Israeli start-up company, and YEDA, a technology spin-off company from Weizmann Research Institute, Israel. The agreement with Phinergy will allow Indian Oil to work on adoption of advanced energy systems for the Indian market both for mobility and stationary industrial applications. This association could lead to the setting up of manufacturing units for these energy systems initially in India.

    BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement India, Bangladesh, Nepal approve Passenger protocol

    Bangladesh, India, and Nepal agreed on the text of operating procedures for passenger vehicle movement (Passenger protocol) in sub-region under Bangladesh - Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA). The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of High-level officials of three decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of High-level officials of three countries held in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was convened and chaired by India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

    DIPP arm Launches Competition for College Students

    Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), under the department of industrial policy and promotion, launched a competition for college and university students to foster a culture of innovation and creativity in the youth.  The competition - IPrism - invites students to submit films on piracy and counterfeiting under two categories of 30 and 60 seconds. Another category in the competition is a mobile gaming app on intellectual property (IP). Cash prizes of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the winning teams along with mementos and certificates. 

    Romanian PM Mihai Tudose Resigns after Losing Party Support

    Romania's left-wing Prime Minister Mihai Tudose resigned after losing the backing of his party due to internal power struggles, barely seven months after his predecessor suffered the same fate.  He handed in his resignation after senior members of the ruling Social Democrats (PSD) voted to withdraw their support at a leadership meeting.

    India and US join hands to enhance effectiveness of information exchange and transparency

    To enhance the effectiveness of information exchange and transparency, India and United States of America (USA) signed the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) under FATCA in 2015. The Notably, the two countries are committed to establishing, by January 1, 2017, rules requiring their Reporting Financial Institutions (RFID) to obtain the Tax Identity Number (TIN) of each reportable person having a reportable account as of June 30, 2014 (pre-existing account). The Income-tax Rules, accordingly, provide for reporting of U.S. TIN from the year 2017 onwards in respect of any pre-existing account. The US-IRS has issued guidelines through Notice 2017-46 dated 25.09.2017 providing relaxation to Foreign Financial Institutions (FFIs) with respect to reporting of U.S.TIN for calendar years 2017, 2018 and 2019.

    Digital launch of I4Fund call for proposal website at India-Israel Business Summit

    The ‘I4Fund Call for Proposal’ was announced with the joint launch of the website and the unveiling of the brochure by the two PMs (Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu). The "India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F)" was announced in July 2017.  Under this, the Department of Science and Technology, India and the National Innovation Authority of Israel have established a 40 million US dollar Fund.

    The 65th Meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) was held under Chairmanship of Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi. The Education Ministers of 20 States, representatives of 28 states/UTs, members of CABE, heads of the autonomous organization. The Operation Digital Board will be launched in all schools in five years and will be undertaken jointly by Centre, State, Corporate Social Responsibility. CABE also will ensure to provide Quality, Equity, Accessibility, Accountability and Affordability in education by pro-active action and plan.

    Air Indias new year gift to women: Gives reservation for women in seats

    The public sector major aviation company given women travelers special thanks to the New Year (2018). Air India announced a reservation of seats for women in all its domestic flight services. This kind of service has become the country's first airline company. Special respect to women on our behalf Air India is booking a full line for all women at an economy class at no extra charge. This is for women who are traveling alone or with their young children. " To avail this facility, female passengers can contact the airline's counter or booking officer at the airport for up to 90 minutes before flying. This facility of the company is only valid for domestic flights only.

    India emerging as a biggest tourism hub across the globe; over 11 lakh tourists arrived New Delhi in Dec 2017

    Tourism sector of the nation is blooming year by year, as the Foreign Tourists Arrivals have bloomed by 15.2% in December 2017 as compared to December 2016. And also 48.3% Growth in Foreign Tourist Arrivals on an e-Tourist visa in December 2017 Over December 2016. The number of FTAs in December 2017 was 11.76 lakh as compared to FTAs of 10.21 lakh in December 2016 and 9.13 lakh in December 2015. The growth rate in FTAs in December 2017 over December 2016 was 15.2%, compared to 11.9% in December 2016 over December 2015. FTAs in the year 2017 was 101.77 lakh with a growth of 15.6% over 2016, compared to FTAs of 88.04 lakh with a growth of 9.7% is 2016 over 2015. The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India during December 2017 among the top 15 source countries was highest from Bangladesh (19.04%) followed by USA (16.90%), UK (10.41%), Australia (5.31%), Canada (3.85%), Russian Fed. (3.79%),Malaysia (3.11%), Germany (2.08%), China (2.06%), Sri Lanka (2.01%), Singapore (1.85%), France (1.81%), Japan (1.64%), Thailand (1.60%) and Italy (1.44%).

    India and Israel sign 9 agreements in space, defence, cybersecurity

    India and Israel have signed nine agreements to boost cooperation in the areas of space, cyber security and oil and gas between both countries. The agreements were signed following delegation-level talks headed by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu in New Delhi. Netanyahu is first Israeli Prime Minister to visit India in the span of last 15 years and second one overall. Agreement on Film-co-production.   • Indias first agri-Options unveiled for doubling farmers income

    Finance Minister Arun Jaitley the development of the agriculture sector is a priority for the NDA government. He launched country's first agri-commodity options. India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and the growth is benefitting people in different sectors. But maximum population is dependent on agri-sector and unless the gains are clear and evident, the (economic) growth is not justifiable and equitable.     Federal Bank ties up with Hedge Equities

    Federal Bank entered into a strategic partnership with Hedge Equities Ltd for providing Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) services to NRIs. A formal agreement was executed in which Jose K Mathew (EVP & Head Retail Business, Federal Bank) and Alex Babu (MD, Hedge Equities Ltd) exchanged the MoU announcing the tie-up. Federal Bank is authorized by the RBI to issue permission letter to NRIs on behalf of the RBI to transact in the secondary market. 

    IDFC Bank Capital First to merge in Share Swap Deal

    IDFC Bank and Capital First approved a merger of Capital First with IDFC Bank. Pursuant to the merger which is subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, IDFC Bank will issue 139 shares for every 10 shares of Capital First.  The deal values Capital First - owned more than a third by private equity firm Warburg Pincus - at Rs. 938.25 a share based on the two companies' price and giving the company a market value of Rs. 9,278 crore ($1.46 billion), Reuters calculations showed.
