    International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August 2020. The day is observed by the United Nations (UN) and its member states. The day marks the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982. 

    Theme:
    The theme of 2020 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples "COVID-19 and indigenous peoples’ resilience". The day is virtually commemorated. It featured a panel discussion on the innovative ways indigenous peoples demonstrate resilience and strength in the face of the covid-19 pandemic while confronting grave threats to their survival. 
    The theme highlights how the promotion and preservation of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge and practices can be leveraged during this pandemic. The interactive virtual event was focused on building back the good practices stronger.

    Quit India Day is observed on 9th August every year. The day commemorates th the important movement in the freedom struggle. The day is celebrated to pay tribute to the freedom fighters. 

    Quit India Movement:
    The Quit India Movement is also known as India August Movement or Bharat Chodo Andolan. It was launched by Mahatma Gandhi at the Bombay session of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) on 8 August 1942 during World War II. The movement demanded "An Orderly British Withdrawal" from India. As the movement was held in August, it is also known as August Kranti or August Movement. Under the movement, more than 1,00,000 people were arrested and the government resorted to violence in order to crush the agitation. The movement was crushed in 1944 as the British refused to grant immediate independence. But after the Quit India movement, the British cited that immediate independence could happen only after WII had ended.

  • First Kisan Rail from Devlali to Danapur flagged off

    Indian Railways unveiled the first “Kisan Rail” from Devlali to Danapur on 7th August 2020 from Devlali. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development and Panchyati Raj Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar and Railways and Commerce & Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal flagged off the train via video conferencing.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The Kisan Rail will run on a weekly basis with an initial composition of 10 +1 VPs. 
    ♦ Kisan Rail was announced in the 2020 budget. 
    ♦ Agriculture produce needs the best possible distribution and returns. 
    ♦ The train will ensure that agro-products reach from one corner to another corner of the country. 
    ♦ This train will benefit farmers and consumers.
    ♦ Kisan Rail will ensure the fast transportation of agriculture produce across the nation. 
    ♦ The train will provide a seamless supply chain of Perishable produce as the freight of the train will be charged as per parcel tariff of normal train at the ‘P’ Scale.  The train will be of great help to the farmers.
    ♦ The train will serve as a milestone in doubling Farmers’ income. 
    ♦ Indian Railways and Farmers had stood in front of the battle against Covid-19 challenges. 
    ♦ Foodgrains freight was doubled amid the pandemic.

  • TRIFED launched Virtual Office Network to Spearhead Tribal Socio-Economic Development

    Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) under Ministry of Tribal Affairs, has launched launched its own Virtual Office Network to Spearhead Tribal Socio-Economic Development on the occasion of its 33rd Foundation Day on August 6, 2020. TRIFED has doubled its efforts to offer its help and support the tribal people in employment and livelihood generation.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The TRIFED Virtual office network has 81 online workstations and 100 additional converging State and agency workstations that will help the team of TRIFED warriors work with their partners across India on Mission-mode with an aim to bring the tribal people closer to mainstream development.
    ♦ It aims to gauge the level of employee engagement and streamline their efforts, an Employee Engagement and Work Distribution Matrix with Dashboard Links has also been launched. 
    ♦ TRIFED has also launched other digital software with an aim to enable the States and regions to work seamlessly.
    ♦ The move is to promote tribal commerce and map and link its village-based tribal producers and artisans to national and international markets by setting up state of art e-platforms benchmarked to international standards.

    TRIFED:
    TRIFED was registered under the then Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act 1984. TRIFED was set up in 1987 under the aegis of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It works towards the socio-economic development of the tribal people from all states. TRIFED started its operations in 1988 with its head office in New Delhi. TRIFED started the procurement and marketing of tribal art and craft items through its first retail outlet called TRIBES INDIA in New Delhi in 1999.

    Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Kumar Joshi took the oath of office and secrecy as Chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on 7 August 2020.   • Jal Shakti Ministry launched new version of India Water Resources Information System

    The Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched a new version of the India Water Resources Information System (India-WRIS). The new system provides with new functionalities and features. The advanced version is to address the requirement of a strong data base and a reliable information system. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The new version of India-WRIS is open to the public, and accessible through the web portal www.indiawris.gov.in.
    ♦ The portal contains information related to Water Resources for rainfall, water levels & discharge of rivers, water bodies, groundwater levels, reservoir storages, evapotranspiration and soil moisture, and modules on water resources projects, water bodies, hydro-met data availability and tools for GIS layer editing.
    ♦ Through a secured login, Central and State Water Agencies can enter, analyze, validate and manage data for water level of both Surface Water & Ground Water, water quality, flow, sediment, and many climate parameters. 
    ♦ The new system includes time-series data obtained through manual readings and telemetry data received by means of GPRS or satellite.
    ♦ With this, any stakeholder can visualize the information in a user friendly manner, as well download the information in the form of excel reports and graphs.

    Government of India has extended Line of Credit (LoC) worth $18 million to the Government of Maldives. The aim is to expand the fishing facilities at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

    ♦ The fund will be used for setting up of a tuna cooked plant and fishmeal plant.

  • National Handloom Day is observed on 7 August

    National Handloom Day is observed on 7 August every year. The days aim to create awareness about the importance of the handloom industry in socio development of the nation. The day honours the handloom weavers. The day will increase awareness about the benefits of handloom to the younger generations. The day is observed to strengthen efforts towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

    History:
    PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day at the University of Madras' Centenary Hall in Chennai, on 7 August 2015. The observation of the day on August 7 was selected to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement that was launched in Calcutta Town Hall on this day in 1905 to protest against the British Government's partition of Bengal. The movement was aimed to revive the production processes and domestic goods. 

    Handlooms are environmentally friendly, and a viable way to make a living. The handloom sector provides 4.33 million people with jobs and is the second-largest source of employment in rural India. Around 95% of the world's handwoven fabric comes from India.

  • Union Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched the Sahakar Cooptube NCDC Channel

    Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched the Sahakar Cooptube NCDC Channel. It is a new initiative by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). The move is in line with operationalizing different aspects of Atma Nirbhar Bharat. He also launched guidance videos produced by NCDC on ‘Formation and Registration of A Cooperative’ for 18 different states in Hindi and regional languages.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Government of India under Atma Nirbhar Bharat announced a series of transformative measures and sector-specific financial packages, recently, with an aim to help agriculture.
    ♦ The initiatives are towards One Nation One Market. It aims to make India become a food factory in the world. 
    ♦ The key strategy in the ecosystem is to facilitate the involvement of youth in cooperatives.
    ♦ The guidance videos in different languages will cover 18 States that will strengthen and deepen the major initiatives of GoI to promote and form 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). 
    ♦ NCDC plays a major role in the formation of FPOs in cooperative mode. Many states will be added to the collection of guidance videos on NCDC Sahakar Cooptube Channel in due course of time.
    ♦ The move aims to strengthen all the activities and services in agriculture, horticulture, and allied sectors through the creation and development of agriculture infrastructure, medicinal and herbal plants, micro food enterprises, value chains, and logistics for fishery and animal husbandry, beekeeping and Operation Green. Significant legislative amendments have been made to create a conducive environment for agriculture.

    National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC):
    NCDC is an apex level statutory institution under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare. NCDC has achieved success with cumulative financial assistance to cooperatives to the tune of Rs.1,54,000 crore. It has achieved 83% of the cumulative financial assistance calculated since 1963, during these last six years alone. The cooperatives have a huge network of over 8.50 lakh organizations and 290 million members. They have substantially contributed in raising the income of their members and achieving rural prosperity.

  • Lupin launched coronavirus drug Favipiravir in India at Rs.49 per tablet

    Drug major Lupin announced the launch of its Favipiravir drug under the brand name 'Covihalt.' The drug will be used to treat patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms at Rs.49.  The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved Favipiravir for emergency use. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The Covihalt dosage strength has been developed keeping in mind the convenience of administration.
    ♦ The drug will be available as 200 mg tablets in the form of a strip of 10 tablets and priced at Rs.49 per tablet.
    ♦ The aim is to leverage the expertise in managing widespread community diseases like tuberculosis (TB) to proactively reach patients across India.
    ♦ It ensures access to Covihalt through its strong distribution network and field force.
    ♦ Previously, on August 4, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries had launched Favipiravir under the brand name FluGuard for the treatment of mild to moderate cases of COVID- 19, at Rs.35 per tablet in India. Shares of Lupin were trading 0.32% higher at Rs.943.70 apiece on BSE.

    The book “The Swachh Bharat Kranti” was officially launched by Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Union Minister of Textiles and Women & Child Development Smt. Smriti Irani in New Delhi on 4 August. The book was edited by Shri Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary of Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has been translated into Hindi and published as the Swachh Bharat Kranti. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The translation of the book Swachh Bharat Kranti is “The Swachh Bharat Revolution”.
    ♦ The Swachh Bharat Kranti expresses the journey of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) through 35 essays by a diverse range of stakeholders and contributors to the SBM.
    ♦ The book shares their perspective about SBM on this social revolution. 
    ♦ The essays in The Swachh Bharat Revolution book are arranged in four key sections which are the four key pillars of SBM’s success:

  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju chaired 1st General Council meeting of Khelo India Scheme

    Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju chaired the first General Council meeting of the Khelo India Scheme on 4th July. The annual competitions like the Khelo India Youth Games and University Games, are being organized at the national level under the Khelo India Scheme. This has helped to identify sporting talent from all states.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The meeting urged the states to organize State-level Khelo India Games annually with an effort to identify a larger number of grassroots-level talents. 
    ♦ The States that already conduct annual sporting competitions are directed to align with the Khelo India Scheme.
    ♦ The Government of India reaffirmed to support them in conducting these events. 
    ♦ It was decided to identify talent as young as 5 to 10 years old and groom them to be future champions as it takes at least eight years to groom an athlete for the Olympics. 
    ♦ Also, the states have been directed to organize competitions at the district, block, and panchayat-level to identify young talent. 
    ♦ The Sports Ministry announced its plan for the 5 zonal talent scouting committees for east, west, north, south, and northeast India.

    Sashidhar Jagdishan is to be the next Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDFC Bank. He will replace Aditya Puri as the head of the private sector lender. The RBI on August 4 approved the appointment of Sashidhar Jagdishan as MD & CEO of HDFC Bank for three years.

    Sashidhar Jagdishan:
    Sashidhar Jagdishan has worked with the bank for nearly 25 years. He has played a critical role in supporting the growth trajectory of the lender. Jagdishan is currently serving as the Group Head and Change Agent of the Bank. Jagdishan became HDFC's Business Head–Finance in the year 1999. Sashidhar was appointed as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2008.
  • Theatre maestro Ebrahim Alkazi passes away

    Ebrahim Alkazi, the first Director of the National School of Drama (NSD), passed away on 4th August 2020. Alkazi was considered as the Father of modern Indian theatre. He was 94 years old. He was also an art connoisseur, collector, and gallery owner. Alkazi founded the Art Heritage Gallery in New Delhi.

    Ebrahim Alkazi:
    Ebrahim Alkazi assumed charge of the National School of Drama in the year 1962. He was the longest-serving director of the school. He produced several plays like Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq and Dharamvir Bharati’s Andha Yug, and many Greek and Shakespearean plays. He has also mentored generations of actors, including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Rohini Hattangadi, Surekha Sikri, and Pankaj Kapoor. Alkazi, the former NSD directors is remembered for his love of art, being a collector, and for founding the Art Heritage Gallery in Delhi with his wife Roshan Alkazi.

    Ministry of Defence (MoD) has prepared a draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020 (DPEPP 2020) to provide impetus to self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The policy will be in line with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Package’. The implementation of the policy & framework will position India amongst the leading countries of the world in defence and aerospace sectors

    Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020:
    ♦ The DPEPP 2020 aims to provide a focused, structured and significant thrust to defence production capabilities of the country for self-reliance and exports.
    The main objective of the DPEPP policy is to achieve a turnover of Rs 1,75,000 Crores (US$ 25 billion). It includes export of Rs.35,000 Crore (US$ 5 billion) in Aerospace and Defence goods and services by 2025.
    ♦ The policy will develop a robust, dynamic, and competitive Defence industry including the Aerospace & Naval Shipbuilding industry to provide service to the needs of Armed forces with quality products.
    ♦ Under the policy, the dependence on imports will be reduced "Make in India" initiatives will be implemented through domestic design and development.
    ♦ The policy also aims to promote the export of defence products and become part of the global defence value chains.
    ♦ The main aim of the DPEPP policy is to create an environment that encourages Research &Development, creates Indian IP ownership, rewards innovation, and promotes a robust and self-reliant defence industry.
    ♦ The Policy will bring out multiple strategies in the following areas namely:
    • Indigenization & Support to MSMEs/Startups
    • Procurement Reforms
    • Optimize Resource Allocation
    • Investment Promotion, FDI & Ease of Doing Business
    • Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and Ordnance Factory Board (OFB)

  • DCGI approved Phase II,III trials of Oxford University vaccine by Serum Institute, Pune

    The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved Phase II+III clinical trials of Oxford University-Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine, COVISHIELD, in India by the Serum Institute of India, Pune. The move is to hasten the development of the COVID-19 vaccine.

    Highlights:
    ♦ DCGI approval comes as India continues to improve the Case Fatality Rate (CFR). It also aims to maintain its global position of having one of the lowest COVID fatalities rates. 
    ♦ The management strategy of the COVID-19 pandemic also focuses on early detection and isolation of cases with seamless patient management.
    ♦ The move also aims to prioritize the care of the high-risk population using field health care workers that lead to an increase in recoveries across the country. 
    ♦ The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) also issued a Revised Guidelines for International Arrivals.

The MoU aims to conduct predictive analysis of public grievances.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Under the MoU, IIT-Kanpur will develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Techniques to conduct exploratory and predictive analysis of Public Grievances received on the web-based Centralized Public Grievances Redress & Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) pertaining to the MoD. 
    ♦ The DARPG will provide the data dump on the Public Grievances pertaining to MoD to IIT-Kanpur to facilitate their analysis. DARPG is the nodal Department of Government of India in respect of policy initiatives on Public Grievances and custodian of data on web-based CPGRAMS portal.
    ♦ The project is aimed to help the MoD to identify the cause and nature of grievances and bring about systemic changes and policy interventions wherever required.

  • NASA Astronauts returns safely after successful Demo-2 mission

    Two US astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, returned from the International Space Station (ISS) on 2 August 2020.  The Crew Dragon was designed and operated by Space-X. It is being used for this flight test can stay in orbit about 110 days.

    NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 Mission:
    ♦ NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight was the first crewed flight to launch from the US since 2011.
    ♦ The Demo-2 mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
    ♦ The Commercial Crew Program of NASA has worked with several American aerospace industry companies with an aim to facilitate the development of US human spaceflight systems since 2010.
    ♦ It aimed to develop reliable and cost-effective access to and from the ISS.
    ♦ The demo-2 mission is the final flight test that intended to validate its different components, like the spacecraft Crew Dragon, operations capabilities, the launch vehicle Falcon 9, and the launch pad LC-39A.
    ♦ The Crew Dragon performed a series of phasing manoeuvres to gradually approach and autonomously dock with the ISS., after its launch.
    ♦ The two astronauts performed tests of the Crew Dragon and conduct research with Expedition 63.
    ♦ The main objective of the Demo-2 mission is to make access to space easier in terms of its price, so that cargo and crew can be easily transported to and from the ISS, enabling greater scientific research.

    ♦ The services are different from other operators as BSNL is providing unlimited free voice calling.
    ♦ As BSNL increases its customer base with the high Technology services, it gives a great opportunity to local residents of Akola and Washim district to join hands with BSNL as Telecom Infrastructure Partners. 
    ♦ The partners will earn a regular monthly income of about Rs.1 lakh per month thereby becoming self-reliable under Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiatives.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The new model can be utilized to estimate the key aspects of medical inventory requirements which are required to scale up both the testing capabilities and the critical care facilities. 
    ♦ The model is extremely relevant for COVID-19, as the disease character and the behavioral patterns of the people change.
    ♦ The model reduces errors by letting one understand the range of variation of the predicted infections.
    ♦ This new approach allows for planning of requirements for critical resources such as ICUs, Personal protective equipment (PPEs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. 
    ♦ The new model is designed for simplicity of interpretation, and adaptability over time.

  • GoI launched a programme for the benefit of artisans involved in manufacturing of Agarbatti under Gramodyog Vikas Yojana

    Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) approved a programme to benefit the artisans involved in the manufacturing of Agarbatti under ‘Gramodyog Vikas Yojana’ on 30th July 2020. The aim is to develop the village industry. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ As per the programme, four Pilot Projects will be started initially. 
    ♦ Each targeted cluster of artisans get support with about 50 Automatic Agarbatti making machines and 10 Mixing machines. 
    ♦ Over 200 Automatic Agarbatti making machines and 40 Mixing machines will be provided to the artisans.
    ♦ Earlier Government of India made two major decisions o boost the indigenous production of ‘Agarbatti’and will pave the way to generate rural employment. The 2 decisions are:
    1. placing the ‘Agarbatti’ item from “Free” trade to “Restricted” trade in the import policy
    2. enhance the import duty from 10% to 25% on ‘round bamboo sticks’ which are used for manufacturing of Agarbatti. 

    ♦ This will also start the process of mitigating the gap between the indigenous ‘production and demand’ and will reduce the import of ‘Agarbatti’ in the country
    ♦ The program will act as a catalyst in reviving the Agarbatti manufacturing in the villages and small towns and will immediately generate a  minimum of about  500 additional jobs.
    ♦ The programme aims to enhance the production of ‘Agarbatti’ in the country and create sustainable employment for the traditional Artisans, by providing them regular employment and an increase in their wages. 
    ♦ The programme will give a boost to the domestic Agarbatti Industry in India.
    ♦ It will also reduce imports of Agarbatti.

  • KVIC and ITBP sign MoU to supply Khadi Mustard Oil now

    The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to supply mustard oil on 31st July 2020. The move is in line with “Aatmanirbhar.” The MoU was signed by Shri VK Nagar, Director, KVIC and Shri Rama Kant Sharma, DIG, ITBP in presence of KVIC Chairman, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The KVIC and ITBP have signed the MoU for a period of one year and it will be renewed further.
    ♦ The next products in the pipeline are cotton mats (dari), blankets, bedsheets, pillow covers, pickles, honey, papad, and cosmetics, etc. The total value of oil and dari will be approximately Rs.18 crore.
    ♦ The move By GoI is to encourage local products in a bid to support the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan” initiated by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. 
    ♦ GoI also made it mandatory to sell only “Swadeshi” products through the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) canteens across India. 
    ♦ ITBP is the nodal agency appointed by MHA for the procurement of provisions on behalf of all paramilitary forces.
    ♦ The ITBP is expected to place an order for a supply of 1200 quintals of high quality kacchi ghani mustard oil which will be supplied by KVIC through its Prime Ministers Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) units in a month’s time.
    ♦ The MoU aims to provide the best quality oil to the jawans guarding our borders, that too, on time will be our top priority.
    ♦ KVIC recently supplied products like honey, pickles, edible oils, agarbatti, papad, amla candy, and cotton towels, etc. to CAPF canteens on trial basis. 
    ♦ Also, 63 new products are being prepared for adding in the supply basket.

    ♦ India extended an invitation to the BRICS nations to participate in the BRICS environment meetings.

    Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) was awarded the SKOCH Gold Award for its “Empowerment of Tribals through IT-enabled Scholarship Schemes”. It is the project of the Scholarship Divison of the Ministry. MoTA chose to participate in Digital India & E-Governance-2020 Competition. The awards were announced on 30 July 2020. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The theme of the 66th SKOCH 2020 Competition was “INDIA RESPONDS TO COVID THROUGH DIGITAL GOVERNANCE.”
    ♦ The project aimed to achieve Digital India and bringing transparency and ease in the delivery of services. 
    ♦ The aim is to assimilate with the larger vision of ‘Digital India’ and to realize GoI's goal of e-governance. 
    ♦ MoTA has integrated all 5 Scholarship Schemes with DBT Portal under the guidance of DBT Mission. The initiative was rolled out on 12th June 2019 by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Arjun Munda and MoS Ms. Renuka Singh Sarota.
    ♦ The DBT portal provides facility to States for data sharing through Web services that have brought paradigm shift from Paper-based UC monitoring mandated for budget release to data-enabled budget release and monitoring process. 
    ♦ The portal has the facility to upload documents (not on Digi-Locker).  
    ♦ These portals have Grievance Redressal and Communication Mechanism and all stakeholders, Universities, banks, PFMS, Students, and States can upload queries, grievances, and upload documents, which has made grievances redressal mechanism easy, transparent and fast.  
    ♦ KPMG, as part of NITI Aayog's mandate, carried out a national evaluation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes focused on social inclusion. KPMG recognized the Direct Benefit  Transfer (DBT) Portal of Ministry of Tribal Affairs as a best practice in e-governance which has brought about greater transparency, accountability, and radical improvement in service delivery to Scheduled Tribe students.

Under the MoU, it is expected to lay the foundation for cooperation and joint action in the area of UBA for rural development of India. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The MoU aims to provide access to CSIR rural technologies for Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA).
    ♦ It is expected that the adoption of CSIR technologies and related knowledge base are in tune with the people's aspirations in furtherance of initiatives such as UBA and VIBHA.
    ♦ UBA is a national program that functions under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) envisioning the transformational change in rural development processes by leveraging knowledge institutions to help build the architecture of an inclusive India.
    ♦ The MoU is needed as an adequate structural network is essential for effective implementation of UBA nationwide. 
    ♦ The MoU will enhance collaboration among the concerned ministries, district administration, local Panchayat Raj Institutes (PRIs), voluntary organizations, other stakeholders, and participating institutions in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.
    ♦ The MoU will pave the way for effective coordination between CSIR, IIT Delhi, and Vijnana Bharati (Vibha) towards meeting the objectives of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.

    Padma Shri awardee Sonam Tshering Lepcha passed away on 30 July. He was 92 years old. The Folk musician died due to the old age ailments and suffered a cardiac arrest. He is a multi-faceted personality and made outstanding efforts to popularise the great Lepcha culture.

    Sonam Tshering Lepcha:
    Lepcha was born in 1928 in Kalimpong, West Bengal. He began his career as a soldier. He travelled to various parts of Sikkim. He compiled a wide range of Indian folk and traditional Lepcha songs and played folk music on All India Radio (AIR) in 1960. Lepcha was highly revered in Sikkim. He played a vital role in reviving Lepcha culture and outstanding efforts to popularise the great Lepcha culture. It is an indigenous culture in Sikkim. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of folk music.

Bose National Centre For Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), Kolkata, an autonomous research Institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has developed “AJO-Neo”, a No-touch and Painless device for non-invasive screening of bilirubin level in new-borns. SNBNCBS hosted a Technical Research Centres (TRC) funded by DST and in scientific collaboration with Nil-Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. 

    AJO-Neo:
    ♦ AJO-Neo is based on non-contact and non-invasive spectrometry-based techniques for the measurement of neonatal bilirubin level as an alternative of total serum bilirubin (TSB) test without limitations of other available bilirubin meters.
    ♦ The device is reliable in measuring bilirubin levels in preterm, and term neonates irrespective of gestational or postnatal age, sex, risk factors, feeding behavior, or skin color. 
    ♦ The device is found to deliver an almost instantaneous report (about 10 seconds) to a concerned doctor, who is sitting 10,000 km away from the point of care. 
    ♦ The new methods has showed improved output when compared to the conventional “blood test” method, which takes more than 4 hours to generate the report. 
    ♦ AJO-Neo has been transferred by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), an enterprise of DSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India in the presence of Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, DST to a Vijayawada based company, M/s Zyna Medtech Private Limited.

    Power Finance Corporation (PFC), a PSU under the Ministry of Power signed an MoA with the Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur (IIT-K). The agreement aims to support Training, Research, and Entrepreneurship Development in Smart Grid Technology. The agreement was signed by Shri M Prabhakar Das, Chief General Manager (CSR&SD), PFC, and Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh, Dean Resource and Alumni on a virtual platform.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Under the MoA, PFC will provide financial assistance of Rs.2,38,97,000 to IIT-K under its CSR initiative.
    ♦ The main objective of the pact is to provide support to IIT-K in developing infrastructure for research and development on smart grid technology. 
    ♦ Under this project, IIT-K will provide training on smart grid technology to 90 participants. It will als provide fellowship to 9 selected candidates for the development of ideas on Smart Grid Technology. 
    The participants will be assisted by the Start-up Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) of IIT-K and will take up entrepreneurial activities.

  • MoES announced National Awards for excellence in Earth System Science

    Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has mandated to provide the nation with the best possible services for weather, climate, ocean, coastal and natural hazards, for the Public Safety and socio-economic benefits. The Ministry deals with exploration and sustainable harnessing of ocean resources (living and non-living) and plays a nodal role for Antarctic/Arctic/Himalayas and Southern Ocean research.

    Highlights:
    MoES aims to recognize major scientific contributions made by eminent scientists/engineers in various fields of Earth System Science. The Ministry aims to encourage women & young researchers in the field of Earth System Science. For this purpose, MoES has instituted the Life Time Excellence Award, National Awards in the field of Ocean Science; Geoscience & Technology;  Atmospheric Science & Technology; Ocean Technology/Polar Science, Two Young Researcher awards and Dr. Anna Mani National Award for Woman Scientist.

    Awardees:
    ♦ The Life Time Excellence Award will be awarded to Professor Ashok Sahni for his contribution in the field of Geology, Vertebrate Paleontology and Biostratigraphy.

    ♦ The National Award for Ocean Science & technology will be awarded to Dr. V. V. S. S. Sarma, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Vishakapatnam and Dr. M. Ravichandran, Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa. 
    • Dr. Sarma will be awarded for his contributions in understanding biogeochemistry of the Indian Ocean. 
    • Dr. Ravichandran will be awarded for his Formulation and Execution of Indian Argo Project and Implementation of Ocean Data assimilation and Modelling for operational ocean services.
    Dr. S. Suresh Babu, Scientist-SF, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram will be awarded the National Award for Atmospheric Science & technology will be presented to. The award recognizes his contribution towards understanding the radiative impacts of black carbon aerosols on atmospheric stability and climate.

    N. V. Chalapathi Rao, Department of Geology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, will be awarded National award for Geoscience & technology. The award is for his research on deeper mantle petrology and geochemistry.

    ♦ The National Award for Ocean Technology will be presented to Dr. M. A. Atmanand, Director, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai. He has done pioneering work in the area of deep sea technologies.  

    Dr. Lidita D. S. Khandeparker, Senior Scientist, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa will receive the Anna Mani award for woman scientist. The award is to recognize her contributions in the field of aquatic microbial ecology, Marine biofilms and their relevance in the oceans.

    ♦ The Young Researcher Awards will be presented to Dr. Indra Sekhar Sen, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Dr. Arvind Singh Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad for their outstanding work in Earth System Science.
  • Cabinet approved National Education Policy 2020

    The Union Cabinet led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the National Education Policy 2020 on 29 July. The main objective of the policy is to make way transformational reforms large scale, in both school & higher education sectors. It is the first education policy of the 21st century. 

    National Education Policy 2020:
    ♦ National Education Policy 2020 will replace the 34-year-old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986.  
    ♦ The new policy is built on Equity, Access, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability. The policy is in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 
    ♦ It also aims to transform India into a knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and college education more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student.

    Important Highlights:
    ♦ The main objective of the new Policy is for Universalization of Education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030.
    NEP 2020 is expected to bring 2 crore out of school children back into the main stream.
    ♦ The policy includes new 5+3+3+4 school curriculum with 3 years of Anganwadi/ Pre-schooling and 12 years of schooling
    ♦ It emphasis on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, extracurricular, no rigid separation between academic streams, and vocational streams in schools
    ♦ Under the policy, Vocational Education will start from 6th Class  with Internships
    Teaching upto at least 5th Grade to be in mother tongue and regional language
    ♦ Assessment reforms to track the progress of  Student to achieve Learning Outcomes
    ♦ GER in higher education will be raised to 50% by 2035. Also, 3.5 crore seats is to be added in higher education
    ♦ Higher Education curriculum to have Flexibility of Subjects
    Multiple Entry / Exit to be allowed with appropriate certification
    Academic Bank of Credits to be established to facilitate  Transfer of Credits
    ♦ Under the new policy, the National Research Foundation (NRF) will establish a strong research culture
    ♦ Affiliation System will be phased out with graded autonomy to colleges in 15 years NEP 2020 advocates increased use of technology with equity; National Educational Technology Forum to be created
    ♦ NEP 2020 emphasizes setting up of Gender Inclusion Fund, Special Education Zones for disadvantaged regions and groups
    ♦ New Policy promotes Multilingualism in both schools and HEs; National Institute for Pali, Persian and Prakrit, Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation to be set up.

  • First UDAN-RCS service launched in Uttarakhand

    Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, MoS, I/C, Civil Aviation flagged off the first helicopter service by Pawan Hans in Uttarakhand under the UDAN-RCS scheme on 29 July. So far, 274 UDAN routes have been operationalized to connect 45 airports and 3 heliports since the launch of the first UDAN flight in April 2017. The opening of these new routes and heli service are expected to bring people of the Uttarkhand closer and support tourism in the region.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The new heli service will enable connectivity between Dehradun, New Tehri, Srinagar and Gauchar. 
    ♦ It will enhance the aerial connectivity between hilly regions in Uttarakhand.
    ♦ It will reduce the average travel time to 20-25 minutes. 
    ♦ The move will assist the Chaar Dhaam Yatra pilgrims. 
    ♦ The service will be operated thrice-weekly helicopter services on this route. 
    ♦ Viability Gap Funding (VGF) will be provided to both operators and passengers under the UDAN scheme to keep the fares affordable for the common people. 
    ♦ The fare for these routes is Rs.2900 per seat. 
    ♦ MoCA awarded the Dehradun- New Tehri – Srinagar - Gauchar route to Pawan Hans Ltd. under the UDAN 2 bidding process.
    ♦ Two more networks connecting Dehradun to Ramnagar, Pantnagar, Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh, and Dehradun to Mussoorie will be operationalized soon by Pawan Hans Ltd.
    ♦ So far, 3 rounds of UDAN have already been undertaken and close to 50 lakh passengers have travelled in UDAN flights covering airports in 19 States and 2 UTs. The fourth round of UDAN is under process.
