    AIM (Atal Innovation Mission), in association with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is organizing a two-day hackathon on the circular economy, ‘India–Australia Circular Economy Hackathon (I-ACE)’, on 7 and 8 December.

    ♦ Innovation in packaging reducing packaging waste
    ♦ Innovation in food supply chains avoiding waste
    ♦ Creating opportunities for plastic waste reduction

    Highlights:
    ♦ The idea of the hackathon (I-ACE) was conceived during a virtual summit on 4 June, between the Indian and Australian prime ministers, exploring innovative ways to boost the circular economy in India & Australia.
    ♦ Hackathon will focus on identification and development of innovative technology solutions by bright-minded students, startups and MSMEs of both nations.
    ♦ Shortlisted startups/MSMEs and students will be called for the hackathon (I - ACE), where two winners per theme from each country will be announced at an award ceremony on 11 December. 
    ♦ India and Australia have had a strong and productive bilateral partnership since a decade and our collaborations across a broad range of areas have yielded significant results. Australia and India can align research and developmental efforts to achieve more at a challenging time in the history of mankind.

    Bundi:
    Bundi former capital of Hada Rajput province known as Hadauti located in south-eastern Rajasthan. Bundi is known as City of step walls, blue city and also as Chotti Kashi. The area around Bundi was inhabited by various local tribes, of which the Parihar Tribes, Meena was prominent. Years later the region was governed by Rao Deva, who took over Bundi from Jaita Meena in 1242, renaming the surrounding area as Haravati or Haroti. Rao Raja Chattar Sal became the ruler in 1632. He constructed the temple of Keshavarao at Keshoraipatan and Chathra Mahal at Bundi. 
    The architectural heritage of Bundi can be classified in six typologies: -
    Garh (Fort) - Taragarh 
    Garh Mahal (Royal Palace) - Bhj Mahal, Chattar Mahal, Ummed Mahal
    Baori (Stepwell) - Khoj Darwaja ki Baori, Bhawaldi Baori
    Kund (Stepped tank) - Dhabhai ji ka Kund, Nagar Kund & Sagar Kund, Rani Kund
    Sagar mahal (Lake Palace) - Moti Mahal, Sukh Mahal, Shikar Burj

  • Bharat Biotechs Covaxin gets the nod for phase 3 clinical trials

    The vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR) — Covaxin, has been cleared for the third phase of clinical trials.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Covaxin, the indigenous COVID-19 vaccine candidate has received a nod for Phase-3 clinical trials in the country. 
    ♦ The vaccine is developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
    ♦ The Drug Controller General of India has given assent for the last phase of clinical trials with certain conditions. 
    ♦ The development comes even as several companies across the world are racing against time to develop an effective vaccine against Coronavirus which has claimed more than 10 lakh lives worldwide.
    ♦ In the 3rd and final phase of trials, scheduled to begin in the first week of next month, the potential vaccine candidate will be tested on over 28,000 people aged 18 years and above. 
    ♦ These tests will be conducted across 10 states and 19 sites including Delhi, Mumbai, Patna and Lucknow among others.
    ♦ Besides, Bharat Biotech’s COVAXIN, ZydusCadila Limited is another indigenously developed vaccine candidate which is in Phase -2 of human clinical trials.
    ♦ Recently, drug maker–Bharat Biotech submitted safety and immunogenicity data from an ongoing phase II trial to DCGI for conducting phase III clinical trial for Covaxin. 
    ♦ However, the expert committee asked the pharma company to submit safety and immunogenicity data from the phase II clinical trial for consideration.
    ♦ The DCGI - Drug Controller General of India had granted permission in July to Bharat Biotech pharma giant to conduct phase I and II clinical trials to develop an indigenous vaccine for COVID-19.
    ♦ Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR is making COVID-19 vaccine using the virus strain isolated by Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV).

  • Indian Navy's 1st batch of three women pilots was ready

    The Indian Navy’s first batch of women pilots on Dornier Aircraft at Kochi on October 22, 2020. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ The Indian Navy has made ready its first batch of three women pilots for Maritime Reconnaissance (MR) missions on Dornier aircraft. 
    ♦ The 3 women pilots, Lieutenant Divya Sharma, Lt Shubhangi Swaroop and Lt Shivangi are now ready to take on all MR missions on Dornier aircraft.
    ♦ The three have been "operationalised on Dornier aircraft" by the SNC -  Southern Naval Command.
    ♦ The 3 women pilots were part of the six pilots of the 27th DOFT (Dornier Operational Flying Training Course), who graduated as fully operational Maritime Reconnaissance (MR) Pilots at a passing out ceremony held at INS Garuda.
    ♦ These officers had undergone basic flying training partly with Indian Air Force and partly with the Navy.
    ♦ Lt Shivangi was the 1st to qualify as a naval pilot on December 2, 2019.
    ♦ The two others-Lieutenant Divya Sharma and Lieutenant Shubhangi Swaroop-also became pilots after 15 days.
    ♦ They were made one batch and finally became part of the 6 pilots of the 27th DOFT course, which is the most important phase of training for becoming mission ready pilots.
    ♦ The course comprised a month of the ground training phase, which was conducted at various professional schools of Southern Naval Command and eight months of flying training at the Dornier Squadron of SNC, INAS 550.
    ♦ Lt Divya Sharma and Lt Shivam Pandey were adjudged First in Flying and First in Ground subjects, respectively.

    Mizoram state government has decided to observe 'COVID-19 -No Tolerance Fortnight.' 

    Highlights:
    ♦ It is going to begin from October 26 as a containment measure to flatten the curve of Covid-19 in the state.
    ♦ The Mizoram government has accorded zero-tolerance policy to flouting any COVID-19 containment measures being implemented and enforced. 
    ♦ All Unlock Guidelines, all Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) and all sections of the Mizoram Containment and Prevention of COVID-19 Ordinance, 2020 will be enforced very strictly.
    ♦ The meeting expressed concern over the opening of some classes (Class X and XII) in schools and also the increased vehicular traffic in Aizawl city and suggested that these need to be reviewed in a more detailed manner.
    ♦ State Executive Committee under Mizoram State Disaster Management Authority is expected to issue a notification concerning COVID-19-No Tolerance Fortnight.

    Europe’s Andorra formally joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 16 th October, becoming the crisis lender’s 190th member state as the tourism and trade-dependent principality struggles with the coronavirus pandemic.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Andorra’s initial quota – the capital subscription that determines its voting power and access to financing – is 82.5 million Special Drawing Rights, or about $116.4 million.
    ♦ Andorra faces short-term and long-term challenges common to European and other IMF member countries which have been aggravated by the (coronavirus) pandemic.
    ♦ As an IMF member, the principality’s government will get an annual review of its economic prospects and policies by Fund staff, technical policy advice and full participation in IMF and World Bank spring and annual meetings.

  • Govt launches e-Dharti Geo portal

    Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs (Hardeep Singh Puri) launched the e-Dharti Geo Portal on October 21, 2020. GoI e-Dharti portal will integrate map and also lease plans in the Management Information System (MIS). It will make the system Geographic Information System (GIS) enabled.

    e-Dharti portal:
    ♦ The land and development office is currently dealing with around 60,000 commercial, residential, industrial and institutional properties. It provides a property certificate and the outline map of the property. These details can be accessed online on the portal now.
    ♦ The property holder would be provided with a certificate which includes the property details such as land type, property type, date of allotment, property status, plot area, property address etc.
    ♦ This idea benefits the general public, besides it will help in avoiding unnecessary litigations. The certificate contains the necessary details of the property and a map showing the location of the property. 

  • Third Phase of NSM to commence from January

    The DST - Department of Science and Technology has announced on October 21, 2020, that the third phase of National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) under the Ministry of Science and Technology will commence in January 2021. The 3rd phase of the mission will increase the computing speed to 45 Petaflops (PF).

    Background:
    C - DAC - Centre for Development of Advanced Computing  & the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) signed an agreement with the leading institutes of India on October 12, 2020. By this agreement, manufacturing units and assembly units of supercomputers will be established in the Premier Institutes of the country. This is regarded as a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. The mission is done in a phased manner. 

    Three phases:
    1st Phase - Supercomputing speed of 6.6 Petaflops (PF) was achieved.
    2nd Phase - Supercomputing speed of 10 Petaflops (PF) was achieved.
    3rd Phase - Supercomputing speed will be 45 Petaflops (PF), and it will commence from 2021, January. 

    Indian Supercomputers:
    The 1st supercomputer to be assembled indigenously under the National supercomputing mission (NSM) was Param Shivay. That was installed in IIT Bhubaneswar.  Param Shakti and Param Brahma were other supercomputers under the task and were installed at IIT Kharagpur and IISER Pune respectively.

  • IIT Kharagpur's low-cost coronavirus testing method COVIRAP gets ICMR assent

    A researchers team at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur has developed a low-cost portable kit for rapid diagnostics of coronavirus called COVIRAP, which produces results within one hour.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The COVIRAP kit has been approved by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), and various commercial units have already approached them for technology licensing. The testing facility, can be housed anywhere and does not require an air-conditioned lab.
    ♦ This new testing method implements a highly reliable and accurate molecular diagnostic procedure, conducted in an ultra-low-cost portable device unit and costs only around Rs.500 per test. The cost of the kit is around Rs.5000, and it is entirely indigenous.  
    ♦ Each test requires a kit, three master-mixes which are made by the team. After several steps of mixing and heating, an image of the testing strips is grabbed by a smartphone camera of a custom-made mobile application, and a definite result is produced.

  • NDA govt launches various schemes for farmers empowerment

    NDA government has launched various schemes for the empowerment of farmers emphasized by BJP President JP Nadda. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme has deposited Rs. 6,000 in the account of 10 crore farmers.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The BJP-led NDA government has deposited over Rs. 92,000 directly into the bank accounts of 10 crore farmers under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana Scheme.
    ♦ The soul of India resides in the farmers, and it is the farmer who is the backbone of India.
    ♦ PM Narendra Modi took up the cause of the farmers and implemented the report of MS Swaminathan.
    ♦ For the first time, Minimum Support Price (MSP) of one and a half times the cost was given to the farmers.
    ♦ The three Farm Acts are the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020.

  • Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan launches eco-friendly, efficient and DME fired Aditi UrjaSanch Unit at CSIR-NCL, Pune

    Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the DME fired “Aditi UrjaSanch” unit along with the DME-LPG blended fuel cylinders and handed them over for common public and CSIR-NCL (National Chemical Laboratory) canteen use on a trial basis at CSIR-NCL premises virtually through video-conferencing.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The launch of this burner will also provide a significant boost to the 'Make in India' campaign as all the manufacturers of cylinders, gas stoves, regulators, and gas hose are domestic. 
    ♦ This kind of activity may bridge the gap between demand and supply, and it can ensure energy security for the nation.”
    ♦ Dimethyl ether (DME) is an ultra-clean fuel. 
    ♦ CSIR-NCL has developed the nation’s first kind of DME pilot plant with 20-24Kg/day capacity.
    ♦ The conventional LPG burner is not suitable for DME combustion as DME density is different than LPG. To address this issue, CSIR- NCL’s “ADITI URJA SANCH” has come up with a helpful, innovative setup. 
    ♦ The new Burner is fully designed and fabricated by NCL for DME, DME -LPG blended mixtures and LPG combustion.
    ♦ Salient features of newly designed Burner are:
    a) The new design is efficient for both DME and the blend of DME and LPG.
    b) Novel design and flexible air ingress.
    c) The new nozzle design allows optimum oxygen ingress for combustion
    d) The angles at which nozzles are placed maximize the heat transfer area across the utensils.
    e) Optimum flame velocity can be obtained.
    f) The length of the flame(high, low, and medium)can be adjusted by altering the oxygen ingress.
    g) The experiment shows that it increases the heat transfer rate as well.
     ♦ Its efficiency trials and comparison with conventional burners have been made. Trial runs have demonstrated improvement by 10-15 %, compared to conventional burners using LPG alone.             
    ♦ The DME project is moving on fast track mode from the laboratory to the market to ultimately reach people under the methanol economy and green sustainable fuel policy of the country.
    ♦  A clean cooking fuel combination of DME-LPG also safeguards the well-being of women and children. 
    ♦ The DME process technology is economical, cost-effective, and scalable.
    ♦ The newly designed stove can burn with up to 30 % DME blended with LPG or 100% DME as fuel. 
    ♦ CSIR-NCL plans under “Aditi UrjaSanch” to launch in future industrial burners for low emission, DME/ DME blended fuel for automobiles and stationary power.

    Union Minister for Jal Shakti and Social Justice & Empowerment Sh. Rattan Lal Kataria,  launched a Mobile application for Geotagging of the components of projects under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme(PMKSY-AIBP) of the Department of WR, RD& GR under Ministry of Jal Shakti.

    Highlights:
    ♦ The launch of the App was held through Video Conferencing from Panchkula.
    ♦ Union Govt, in consultation with States, prioritized Ninety-nine (99) ongoing Major/ Medium Irrigation (MMI) Projects in the country, for completion in phases under PMKSY-AIBP. 
    ♦ The completion of these projects will ensure the creation of additional irrigation potential all over the country, which would result in protective irrigation and bring much desired rural prosperity.
    ♦ In order to track the pace of work and actual status of the projects, the Ministry with the help of Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications & Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) has developed and launched the mobile application.
    ♦ As a part of the Digital India campaign, advanced Technology and Latest techniques have been adopted in the monitoring of these projects for keeping track of their progress and bottlenecks in the execution.
    ♦ In this regard, an online Management Information System (MIS) has been developed for time to time review of the progress of works in projects. 
    ♦ The Remote Sensing techniques are also used to assess the cropped area in the command area of the prioritized projects.
    ♦ Mobile Application can be used by monitoring team/ project authorities to capture the image of project component along with other details such as location, type of canal/ structure, completion status, etc. and this captured information can be submitted by the user for geo-tagging on the GIS portal developed for this purpose.
    ♦ The mobile application can be operated in both online & offline mode.
    ♦ The launch of the app is a step forward in the efforts of the Ministry of Jal Shakti for realizing the Honorable Prime Minister’s vision of “Doubling the Farmers Income”.
    ♦ The Officers from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Central Water Commission and Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications & Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) attended the event through VC from all over the country.

    ♦ India is making use of Information Technology (IT) in virtually every aspect of COVID management- AarogyaSetu app and ITIHAS, cellular-based tracking technology has been used for surveillance and identification of potential clusters, RT-PCR app for testing, facility app for managing information on admitted patients, all integrated with a single COVID portal.
    ♦ AarogyaSetu App is currently being used by more than 170 million Indians making it one of the most downloaded apps in the world 
    ♦ The present research agenda for COVID19 has been to provide an affordable vaccine as well as to ensure its equitable distribution
    ♦ Currently, three Indian pharma companies in partnership with foreign/domestic research institutes are expediting the trials of the vaccine.
    ♦ Under the leadership of our Honourable Prime Minister, we have constituted a National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration which is working on all aspects, as well as designing innovative approaches to distribute vaccines in rural and remote regions.
    ♦ India has made huge strides in improving the health of our people in the last two decades
    ♦ And now, India's will be critical to fighting COVID-19 especially when it comes to making vaccines at large scale for the whole world.

  • International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) prescribes regulatory framework for REITs and InvITs in IFSC

    The IFSCA - International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), to develop the financial products and services in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC) has prescribed the regulatory framework for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) & Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) in IFSC.

    Highlights:
    ♦ IFSCA has permitted global participants that are REITs & InvITs incorporated in FATF compliant jurisdictions to list on the stock exchanges in GIFT IFSC. InvITs have been allowed to raise funds through private placements also. 
    ♦ The REITs & InvITs registered in IFSC have been permitted to invest in real estate assets and infrastructure projects, respectively in IFSC. 
    ♦ The REITs and InvITs that are listed in any of the permissible jurisdictions other than IFSC (currently USA, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom excluding British Overseas Territories, France, Germany, Canada and India) or India have been permitted to list and trade on the recognised stock exchanges in IFSC, subject to compliance with their respective laws of the home jurisdiction.
    ♦ The listing of REITs and InvITs in IFSC shall be following the requirements of the stock exchanges in IFSC.
    ♦ The entities in IFSC can participate and benefit from the growth of real estate and infrastructure sector in international jurisdictions.

    The government has announced its vision to make India a global hub of defence manufacturing and initiated a series of reform measures to encourage the domestic defence industry.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled a new version of the procurement manual of the premier military research institute DRDO featuring simplified procedures for the involvement of the private sector in various research and development projects.  
    ♦ The new version manual has been introduced out to encourage the participation of private industry, including start-ups & micro, small and medium enterprises in defence research in sync with the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative.
    ♦ The procurement manual guides all deals, projects and research initiatives in DRDO.
    ♦ The procurement manual-2020 will facilitate faster execution of R&D projects/programmes. 
    ♦ The modified features in the manual will go a long way to facilitate the participation of industry in various R&D projects.
    ♦ The salient features of the new manual include an increase of threshold limit for advance payment, placement of an order on second lowest bidder (L2) in case lowest bidder L1 backs out and 'bid security declaration option' for depositing earnest money.
    ♦ The previous revision of the procurement manual of the DRDO was last carried out in 2016.
    ♦ India is the most popular lucrative markets for global defence giants and it was figured among the top 3 importers of military hardware in the world for the last 8 years. 
    ♦ The Indian armed forces are decided to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement in the next five years.
    ♦ The government is eyeing a turnover of Rs 1.75 lakh crore (USD 25 billion) in defence manufacturing by 2025.

    ♦ Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) contribute safety of life at sea, safety and efficiency of navigation and protection of the marine environment, adjacent shore areas, worksites and offshore installations.
    ♦ Vessels Traffic Management Systems(VTMS)are installed in some of the busiest waters in the world, and are making a valuable contribution to safer navigation, more efficient traffic flow, and protection of the environment.
    ♦ VTMS is compulsory under IMO Convention SOLAS - Safety of Life at Sea.  
    ♦ A modern VTMS compiles all of the information into a single operator.
    ♦ The VTMS traffic image is compiled & collected by advanced sensors such as radar, AIS, direction finding, CCTV and VHF or other co-operative systems and services.
    ♦ India has approximately 15 VTS operating along the Indian Coast.
    ♦ Development of the indigenous VTS software will minimise the expenses of foreign exchange on this issue and also minimise the dependence on foreign support for VTS software. 
    ♦ VTS Software can be provided to Indian friendly nations like Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bangladesh and Gulf countries.

  • Dr Harsh Vardhan launches CSIR partnered clinical trials website CURED on repurposed drugs for covid-19.

    Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was exploring multiple combination clinical trials of antivirals with host-directed therapies for the potential treatment of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan launched an online portal, that provides information about CSIR ushered repurposed drugs and their current stage of trials.
    ♦ It has been working with the AYUSH Ministry for clinical trials of AYUSH drugs. It has undertaken safety and efficacy trials of prophylactics and therapeutics based on individual plant-based compounds.
    ♦ Apart from information about CSIR repurposed drugs, the website “CuRED” also provides details about clinical trials of diagnostics and devices in which the scientific body is involved.
    ♦ Five clinical trials, involving Withania somnifera, Tinospora cordifolia plus Piper longum (in combination), Glycyrrhiza glabra, Tinosporacordifolia and Adhatoda vasica (individually and in combination) 
    ♦ AYUSH-64 formulation is undergoing safety and efficacy trials. 
    ♦ A key clinical trial by CSIR is that of Sepsivac (Mw) against COVID-19 in partnership with Cadila. 
    ♦ The phase-two clinical trial of this drug has been completed successfully on critically ill COVID-19 patients and a more extensive phase-three trial is on the anvil.
    ♦ Also, the phase-two trial of phytopharmaceutical AQCH on COVID-19 patients with Sun Pharma NSE 0.13 % and DBT is underway.
    ♦ In addition to clinical trials of repurposed drugs and vaccines, CSIR has been involved in clinical trials of diagnostics and devices.
    ♦ He lauded the efforts of CSIR for being at the forefront of the ongoing fight against COVID-19 and prioritising clinical trials.

    Central Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari will virtually lay the foundation stone for the first-ever multi-modal logistic park(MMLPs) in Assam.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Shri Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation for India's 1st Multi-modal Logistic Park (MMLPs) at Jogighopa in Assam.

    ♦ Rs 693.97 crores park will provide direct air, road, rail and waterways connectivity to the people.

    ♦ The Project is developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana of the Government of India (GoI).  

    ♦ Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Sarbananda Sonowalpresided over the virtual function, which was attended by Union Ministers of State Dr Jitendra Singh, Gen (Retd) Dr V K Singh and Shri Rameshwar Teli; Ministers from the Assam State, Members of Parliaments, MLAs and senior officers from the Centre and the State were also present on occasion.

    ♦ Shri Nitin Gadkari ministry, envisages developing of 35 Multi-modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) in the country.

    ♦ The 1st such MMLP is being made by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation ( NHIDCL) in Jogighopa of Assam, which will be connected to the road, rail, air & waterways. 

    ♦ This is being developed in 317-acre area along the river Brahmaputra.

    ♦ The 1st phase of construction is scheduled to be completed by 2023.

    ♦ The project will provide direct or indirect employment to nearly 20 lakh youth in the State.

    ♦ Ministry has plans for National Highway works worth Rs 80,000 crore in Assam.

  • Asafoetida/Heeng cultivation has been introduced by CSIR-IHBT in the Indian Himalayan region

    CM of Himachal Pradesh has recognized the efforts of the Institute and announced the introduction & cultivation of Heeng in the state on 6March 2020.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Asafoetida/heeng is one of the top condiments and is a high value spice crop in India.
    ♦ India imports nearly 1200 tonnes of raw asafoetida annually from Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan. 
    ♦ It expenses is  about 100 million USD per year.
    ♦ The 1st seedling of heeng was planted by Director,Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and Instituteof Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT) on 15th October, 2020 at farmer’s field in village Kwaring of Lahaul valley to mark initiation of cultivation of asafoetida in India.
    ♦ The institute has introduced 6 accessions of seeds from Iran throughin October, 2018.
    ♦ ICAR-NBPGR has analysed that in the past 30 years, this has been the first attempt for introduction of asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) seeds in the country.  
    ♦ CSIR-IHBT has raised the plants of asafoetida at CeHAB, Ribling, Lahaul & Spiti, H.P. under the vigil of NBPGR. 
    ♦ This plant prefers cold & dry conditions for its growth. 
    ♦ It takes around 5 years for the production of oleo-gum resin in its roots. Thus, cold desert areas of Indian Himalayan region are suitable for its cultivation.
    ♦ MoU between CSIR-IHBT and State Department of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh was also signed on June 6, 2020 for a joint collaboration for the cultivation of asafoetida in the State. 
    ♦ A capacity building program was also organized for officers of the State Department of Agriculture from 20th July – 22nd July, 2020 in which twelve officers from different districts of Himachal Pradesh has participated.

    The 17th Meeting of Ministers of Justice of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Member States was hosted by Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Law & Justice, Communication and Electronics & Information Technology.

    Highlights:
    ♦ During the meeting, Minister highlighted the initiatives taken by the Indian Government under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for providing affordable and easy access to justice for all.
    ♦ Pro Bono Legal Services is launched, and this helps to provide free legal aid to marginalised sections of the society.
    ♦ Tele-Law services initiated in 2017, so far 3.44 Lakh free legal consultations have been given to poor people through video conferencing. 
    ♦ E-Courts projects with Video-Conferencing facility and rolling out of Virtual Courts, as part of Government’s successful transformative change. During COVID19, pandemic over 25 Lakh hearing through video conference have taken place at various courts of India, out of which 9,000 virtual hearings have taken place at the Supreme Court (SC) alone.
    ♦ Minister urged the SCO Member States to promote an exchange of ideas, best practices and experiences in identified areas through the platform.
    ♦ The SCO Member States, discussed the importance of promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

    Key features of the joint statement:
    ♦ To strengthen the work on the implementation of the Agreement on Cooperation between the Ministries of Justice of the SCO Member States.
    ♦ To continue the work on the implementation of the Action Plans of the working groups of experts on forensic activities and legal services for 2018-2020, as well as to develop Action Plans for 2021-2023.
    ♦ Consider organising exchange programs for representatives of the ministries (law and justice of the SCO member-states) to study the best practices in alternative dispute resolution.
    ♦ To continue discussing the parties' positions on the issues of mutual legal assistance and development of legal services in accordance with national legislation.
    ♦ Actively develop cooperation with the ministries of justice of the SCO observer and dialogue partner states.
    ♦ Continue efforts to develop an online platform for the exchange of legal information, taking into account national laws.

  • BepiColombo Spacecraft crossed Venus

    The BepiColombo SpaceCraft has crossed the Venus in its journey towards Mercury.

    Highlights:
    ♦ BepiColombo is a joint mission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) to the smallest planet Mercury.
    ♦ The mission comprises two satellites launched together: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and  MercuryMagnetospheric Orbiter, MMO(MIO)
    ♦ This mission will perform a comprehensive study of Mercury, including characterisation of its magnetic field, magnetosphere, and both interior and surface structure. 
    ♦ The Spacecraft was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket on 20 October 2018 and it will arrival  Mercury in December 2025.
    ♦ The Spacecraft is one of the European Space Agency's Horizon 2000+ programmes.
    ♦ This is the last mission of the programme to be launched.

    World Health Organisation(WHO) has published global tuberculosis (TB) report of 2020.

    Highlights:
    ♦ WHO has published a global tuberculosis (TB) report every year from 1997.
    ♦ The report published by WHO provides a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic, progress in prevention, diagnosis & treatment of the disease at the regional level and country level and global level.
    ♦ This is done in the context of global strategies and targets endorsed by WHO's the Member States, broader development goals set by the United Nations & targets set in the political declaration at the 2018 United Nation high-level meeting on Tuberculosis.
    ♦ The 2020 edition of the report was published on 14 October 2020.
    ♦ The data in this report are updated every year.
    ♦ Global TB reports from previous years are available from the WHO Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS).
    ♦ The most recent time-series of estimates are published in the 2020 global TB report.

  • India ranks 94 out of 107 nations on the Global Hunger Index 2020

    India took place 94th place among 107 nations in the Global Hunger Index 2020 and is in the 'serious' hunger category with experts blaming low implementation processes, lack of effective monitoring, siloed approach in tackling malnutrition and poor performance by large states behind the low ranking.

    Highlights:
    ♦ In 2019, India's rank was 102 out of 117 countries.
    ♦ The neighbouring countries, Bangladesh ranked 75th, Myanmar ranked 78th and Pakistan ranked 88th is in the 'serious' hunger category.
    ♦ Nepal took 73rd and Sri Lanka in 64th position are in 'moderate' hunger category.
    ♦ 17 nations, including China, Belarus, Turkey, Cuba, Ukraine,  and Kuwait, shared the top rank with GHI scores. 
    ♦ According to the report, 14% of India's population is undernourished.
    ♦ The country recorded a 37.4% stunting rate among children under five and a wasting rate of 17.3 %. The under-five mortality rate is at 3.7 %.
    ♦ The large states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh need to be improved because the national average is affected a lot by these states.
    ♦  GHI score is calculated on four indicators
                 1. Undernourishment; 
                 2. Child Wasting=children under the age of five who have low weight for their height reflecting acute undernutrition; 
                 3. Child Stunting = children under the age of five those have low height for their age reflecting chronic undernutrition.
                 4. child mortality = mortality rate of children under the age of five.

    Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issues directions for including Bhojpuri, Bundelkhand dialects in helplines.

    Highlights:
    ♦ Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed that the facility of speaking in Bhojpuri and Bundelkhand should be made available on various helpline numbers, observing that women would feel more comfortable communicating in regional dialects.
    ♦ The second day of Mission Shakti, is to interact with women village pradhans, BDC members, corporators, heads of urban local bodies, self-help groups and women teachers, through virtual mo
    ♦ The helpline numbers such as 1090, 181, 1076 and 112 should be publicised.
    ♦ The pradhan of Ratsar Kala Garhwar village in Ballia, said that there should be a facility of speaking Bhojpuri and Bundelkhand dialects on helpline numbers such as 1090, 112, 181.
    ♦ This will help the women to feel comfortable speaking in their regional dialect.
    ♦ There is a need to teach the feeling 'gaanvkibeti, sabkibeti'.
    ♦ These are our culture and values, and this should reverberate from villages to cites. 
    ♦ The Centre and state government are making consistent efforts to ensure women security and honour, but the real success will be achieved by cooperation and awareness of women.
    ♦ If the public representative is not aware, then the schemes fall prey to corruption.

  • PFC and JKPCL signs agreement for Liquidity Infusion for Jammu and Kashmir UT

    Government-owned Power Finance Corporation Ltd (PFC), India's leading NBFC, has sanctioned Rs.2790 crore to Jammu Kashmir Power Corporation ltd (JKPCL) for clearing its outstanding dues.

    Highlights:

    ♦ PFC and JKPCL signed and exchanged an agreement for Liquidity Infusion Scheme under "Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan" for the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. 

    ♦ The money sanctioned under the scheme will be used to clear the outstanding dues of CPSU, GENCOs & TRANSCOs, IPPs and RE Generators on March 31 2020.

    ♦ The exchange agreement was signed in the presence of Shri RohitKansal, Principal Secretary, PDDalong with senior officers from JKPDD, KPDCL, JPDCL, PFC & REC.

    ♦ In May, the Government announced an Rs.90,000 crore liquidity infusion for discoms under which these utilities would get loans at economical rates from PFC and REC. 

    ♦ This scheme was an initiative of the Government to help gencos to remain afloat. Later, the liquidity infusion package was increased to Rs.1.2 lakh crore.

    Government of India' sNIC(National Informatics Centre), IEEE Computer Society (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and Oracle Corporation will organize Gov Tech- Thon 2020 commencing from October 30, 2020, to November 1 2020. 
     
    Highlights:
    ♦ Gov Tech-Thon 2020, a pan India 36 hours virtual Hackathon to be organized from October 30 to November 1, 2020

    ♦ It is launched under the Government of India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

    ♦ The virtual hackathon is open to students, working professionals, startups, freelance technologists, faculty, and other IT service firms in India. 

    ♦ During the hackathon, participants will receive mentorship and advice from technical experts from NIC, IEEE and Oracle, as well as senior domain experts from the Ministries of Agriculture, Education and Transport Departments, Government of India.

    ♦ Participants would be given access to the latest tools from Oracle, Oracle Autonomous Database, built-in and easy-to-use cloud security. This technology will help them to develop prototypes that are practical and scalable.
  • India Hosts Virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

    The Seventh Meeting of Ministers of Justice of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad hosted the Member States, Minister of Law & Justice, Communication and Electronics & Information Technology on October 16, 2020. 

    Highlights:
    ♦ India today hosted the virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO.

    ♦ The summit highlighted the initiatives taken by the Indian Government for providing affordable and easy access to justice for all and also about Pro Bono Legal Services to provide free legal aid to marginalized sections of the society.

    ♦ During COVID19 pandemic over 25 lakhs hearings have taken place through video conference at various courts of India, out of which nine thousand virtual hearings took place at the Supreme Court alone.

    ♦ As part of activities of Justice Ministers' Forum, the Minister urged the SCO Member States to promote an exchange of ideas, best practices and experiences in identified areas through the platform. He also stressed on widening the spectrum of activities being undertaken in the Forum.

    ♦ The Seventh Session of the Ministers of Justice of the SCO Member States deliberated on areas of cooperation emphasized the high relevance of mutual exchange of legal information.

    ♦ And on counteraction to the spread of the pandemic & acknowledged the need for collaboration in ADR mechanism area, among others.  

    ♦ Joint Statement following the Results of the Seventh Session of the Ministers of Justice of the SCO Member States was also adopted.

    Union Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar, the Food Processing Industries Minister on October 16, 2020, inaugurated the India-International Food &Agri Week virtually. The focus of the Food and Agro Tech will be on the use and benefit of the technology in the field of food and agriculture sector. India - International Food & Agri Week is being organized from 16th to October 22 2020. CII in association with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, Ministry of Fisheries & Animal Husbandry and Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, is organizing its first-ever Virtual CII Agro & Food Tech: India - International Food &Agri on CII HIVE – virtual platform with an intent to create a platform for the benefit of the stakeholders involved in the agriculture & allied sectors. 
     
    Highlights
    ♦ As per Govt. data, Indian food processing sector is 32% of India's food market. 

    ♦ The focus of the Food & Agro Tech will be on the use and benefit of the technology in the field of food and agriculture sector to increase the income of the farmers.

    ♦ The focus of this sector is in the line of the goal set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double the payment of the farmers by 2022.

    ♦ Proper marketing and the latest technology can lead to more significant development of the agriculture sector. 

    ♦ The GDP growth rate in Agriculture is 3.4%, and this sector has contributed hugely to India's economic growth even during Covid times. 

    ♦ MoFPI has started an awareness campaign named 'Anna Devo Bhava'to mark this occasion.

    ♦ The celebration aims in increasing awareness about the value of the food and also focus on reducing food wastage

    ♦ Under AatmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, MoFPI has started PMFME (PM Formalisation of Micro food Enterprises) scheme with an outlay of Rs 20,000 crores. This scheme will support 2 lakh micro food processing units with credit-linked subsidy and would focus on supporting the SHGs, FPOs and cottage industry.

    ♦ The 14th edition of the Agro and Food Tech is an appropriate platform to showcase the products, services and technology available in the agriculture and related sectors. 

    PM Kisan Sampada Scheme:       
    MoFPI started PM KisanSampada Scheme (PMKSY) for modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlets. MFP scheme is an essential element of PMKSY whose objective is to link agricultural production to the market by bringing together the farmers, processors and retailers. As of now, 37 MFPs have been approved out of which 20 have begun operations. Ministry has expanded the Operation greens scheme from TOP to TOTAL. 
    Under this scheme, Ministry will provide 50% subsidy for transportation of eligible crops from surplus production cluster to consumption centre for six months and Hiring of appropriate storage facilities for suitable crops (for a maximum period of 3 months)

    ♦ BEL announced its plans to open a representative office in Kazakhstan.

    ♦ More than 350 participants attended the webinar, and 39 virtual exhibition stalls, which include seven stalls from Kazakh companies, have been set up in the Expo.
