  • Kiran Mazumdar Shaw hails Real-time Governance module of Chandra Babu Naidu

    Veteran Business leader Kiran Mazumdar Shaw urged political class to emulate the good governance module for better transparency and accountability.  The Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon took to Twitter and shared a snap from the cabinet meeting under the Chairmanship of Chandra Babu Naidu. Recently, President Ram Nath Kovind also took the stock of the war room developed by state administration during his state visit and also hailed the unique initiative. The main aim of RTG tool is to strengthen the course of administration and governance using technological intervention like e-governance, new age technology, and electronic communication.  

    Lok Sabha Passes Insolvency And Bankruptcy Code Amendment Bill

    The Lok Sabha passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which disqualifies wilful defaulters and existing promoters from bidding for stressed assets of companies undergoing insolvency proceedings.  The high levels of NPA at present are due to window dressing and due to evergreening of loans. This situation has arisen because loans were restructured and not classified as NPAs. The problems were shoved under the carpet and these came to light because of the asset quality review initiated by RBI in 2015. Importantly, the bill replaces an ordinance that was brought in last month seeking to bar wilful defaulters, defaulters whose dues had been classified as non-performing assets (NPAs) for more than a year and all related entities of these firms from participating in the resolution process.

    GAIL awards major contracts for Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga

    State-run Gas (India) Limited (GAIL) placed orders for another 400-km natural gas pipeline project under ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG). With this, the total pipe supply orders for 2,100 km of Jagdishpur-Haldia & Bokaro-Dhamra Natural Gas Pipeline (JHBDPL) project have been placed.

    Seventy Eighth Session of Indian History Congress Held in Kolkata

    The three-day long 78th session of the Indian History Congress begun in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Indian History Congress had six sections this time - Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India, Countries Other than India, Archaeology and Contemporary India. The aim of conducting Indian History Congress is for promotion and encouragement of the scientific study of Indian History.

    China Launches World's Largest Human Genome Research Project

    The world's largest human genome research project of 100,000 people was launched by China to document their genetic makeup for a study that aims to help generate the precision medicines of the future.  It is the country's first large project detecting the genetic links between health and sickness and will involve 100,000 people from different ethnic backgrounds and regions. The project includes four stages - collecting, sequencing gene samples, gathering the data and sharing the findings.

    KKR Gets RBI Nod to Start Indias 1st Foreign-Owned ARC

    US buyout giant KKR & Company become the first foreign investor to fully own an asset reconstruction company (ARC) in India as it received approval from the Reserve Bank of India. KKR, one of the most aggressive investors in financial services, plans to deploy a major chunk from its record Asia fund for buying troubled assets in the country, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

    China cuts the ribbon of its first solar highway which will charge the running electric vehicles

    China didn’t stop to make the first solar road of the world despite many-sided the concept as impractically. The project will serve as a clean energy testbed to evaluate new technologies, with an overarching goal to reduce the amount of land needed for solar farms and transmission wires. The panels, covering 5,875 square meters, can generate 1 million kWh of power in a year, enough to meet the everyday demand of around 800 households. Electricity produced by the test section will be used to power highway lights, signboards, surveillance cameras, tunnel and toll gate facilities. Surplus power will be supplied to the state grid. Future functions to be developed include mobile charging for electric vehicles and providing internet connection.

    PM Narendra Modi to share his thoughts in 'Mann Ki Baat' program

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his thoughts with listeners of All India Radio in the Mann Ki Baat programme at 11 AM. his is the 39th edition of the Mann Ki Baat programme will be broadcast on an entire network of AIR and Doordarshan.  It will also be streamed on the YouTube channels of the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and DD News.

    Former football star George Weah elected as Liberia's president. The closest rival of Mr. Weah was his opponent Joseph Boakai. Mr. Weah won the elections with more than 60% of the vote. He succeeded Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.

    US and Turkey open gates for visa services

    International Affairs: The US embassy in Turkey announced it is resuming normal visa services for Turkish citizens, saying Turkish authorities fulfilled assurances no local staff would be detained or arrested for performing their duties. But Turkey swiftly denied having granted such assurances in the affair that has tested relations since the two local employees of the U.S. consulate in Istanbul were held on suspicion of ties to last year's failed coup against President Tayyip Erdogan. The United States suspended visa services at its missions in Turkey in October and Turkey reciprocated.

    Union Government inks Loan Agreement with World Bank for UP Pro-Poor Tourism Development Project

    The Union Government has inked Loan agreement with World Bank for $40 Million IBRD Credit for “Uttar Pradesh Pro-Poor Tourism Development Project”. The objective of UP Pro-Poor Tourism Development Project is to increase tourism-related benefits for local communities in targeted destinations. This main tourist and pilgrimage attractions are Agra, Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Govardhan in Braj region.

    Bilateral Meeting Between External Affairs Minister of India and Jordan Held in New Delhi

    External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Jordanian counterpart Ayman Al Safadi held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi and discussed deepening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.     Nirmala Sitharaman Launches Start-up Incubation Centre in Mangalore

    Nirmala Sitharaman launched a start-up incubation center called the Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning (CEOL) in Mangaluru, Karnataka. She has allocated Rs. 1.5 crore from her MPLAD (Member of Parliament's Local Area Development) scheme for the development of CEOL. She represents Karnataka as an MP in the Rajya Sabha.

    China successfully tested its first Photovoltaic road

    China successfully tested its first photovoltaic (solar) highway based on home-grown technology in country’s eastern Shandong province. With this, China became the second country in the world to construct a photovoltaic highway. China’s photovoltaic highway is constructed using solar panels which have a thin sheet of transparent concrete on top of them, protecting the surface.

    ISRO to launch 31 satellites in single mission on Jan 10

    Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO announced to launch 31 satellites, including India's Cartosat-2 series earth observation spacecraft, in a single mission onboard its Polar rocket on January 10.  The mission will be the first Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) mission after the unsuccessful launch of navigation satellite IRNSS-1H in August this year. The mission's main payload would be India's Cartosat-2 series earth observation satellite.  PSLV-C40 will be used for the launch from the spaceport in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.The mission would be a combination of 28 nanosatellites from foreign countries, including Finland, US and one micro and nanosatellite from India along with one Cartosat satellite.

    Viswanathan Anand Wins World Rapid Chess Championship

    India’s ace chess player Viswanathan Anand won the World Rapid Chess tournament title in Saudi Arabia by beating Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev 2-0 in a two-game tie-break. Saudi Arabia hosted the world chess tournament for the first time. The women’s title was won by China’s Ju Wenjun. Dronavalli Harika was the best-placed Indian, finishing 19th.

    Pluto Exchange Launches Indias First Bitcoin Trading App

    Cryptocurrency dealer 'Pluto Exchange' announced the launch of India’s first mobile application for transacting in virtual currencies. The Pluto Exchange mobile app offers a solution to the coordination problem between payment processors, financial gateways and banks.  The app would permit a range of transactions, including payments, remittances, business-to-business commerce, supply chain finance, asset management and trading.

    SEBI Caps Cross-Shareholding in Rating Agencies at 10%

    Markets regulator SEBI stated that cross-holding in credit rating agencies (CRAs) will be capped at  10 percent and also decided to raise the minimum net worth requirement to Rs 25 crore from the current Rs 5 crore. Also, the board of Sebi has approved a slew of measures for tightening the financial and operational eligibility of the promoters of CRAs, besides greater disclosure requirements for them.

  • India Ranks 5th in List of Countries with Highest NPA Levels

    India has the highest level of non-performing assets (NPA) among BRICS countries and is ranked fifth on a list of countries with the highest levels of NPAs, as per the report by CARE Ratings. The only countries ranked higher than India on the list are Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Ireland. All these countries, along with Spain, are commonly referred to as PIIGS, and have been victims of sovereign debt crises in recent years.  At 9.85 percent, India’s NPA ratio is over 400 basis points higher. Spain is the only PIIGS country ranked lower than India on the list, with an NPA ratio of 5.28 percent.

    Environment Ministry launches Regional Project to Tackle Stubble Burning

    The Environment Ministry approved the regional project on ‘Climate Resilience Building among Farmers through Crop Residue Management’ under National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC). The project was approved at meeting of National Steering Committee on Climate Change (NSCCC) held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Secretary, Environment Ministry. The project aims to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance adaptive capacity and counter adverse environmental impacts arising from stubble burning.

    Indo-Maldives Joint Exercise Ekuverin Concludes

    The two-week long eighth edition of the Indo-Maldives joint military exercise, ‘Ekuverin’, came to an end at Belagavi, Karnataka. ‘ Ekuverin’ means ‘friends’ in the Maldivian language. The bilateral annual exercise was a 14-day joint military training between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The exercise has been held alternatively in India and Maldives since 2009.

    Tourism is a major engine of economic growth and an important source of foreign exchange earnings in many countries including India. However, as the tourism is flourishing, the country's economy is also getting a massive hike. Notably, Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) during the period January-November 2017 were 90.01 lakh with a growth of 15.6% while Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) during the period January-November 2017 were Rs.1,60,865 Crore with a growth of 16.9% over same period of previous year. India's rank in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), 2017 has also shown 25 places jump from 2013. The Rank of India in TTCI Report of 2017 was 40th as compared to 52nd in 2015 and 65th in 2013.

    India Signs Loan Agreement with World Bank for UP Tourism Project

    An agreement for IBRD Credit of USD 40 Million from World Bank for “U.P. Pro-Poor Tourism Development Project” was signed between India and the World Bank. The programme size is approximately USD 57.14 million, of which USD 40 million will be financed by the Bank, and the remaining amount will be funded out of State Budget. The programme duration is 5 years. The Project Objective is to increase tourism-related benefits for local communities in targeted destinations. The major districts under attractions in Uttar Pradesh are Agra, Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Govardhan in the Braj region.

    Parliament passes Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second Amendment Bill, 2017

    The Parliament passed National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second Amendment Bill, 2017. It seeks to amend National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second Act, 2011. The Bill extends the deadline for relocating slum dwelling unauthorized colonies, village Abadi areas in NCT Delhi and calls for creating a policy for farmhouses constructed beyond permissible limits.

    SBI Gets Board Approval to Raise Rs 8,000 crore to Comply Basel III

    According to the country's largest lender, SBI, its board approved raising Rs 8,000 crore through various sources, including masala bonds, to meet Basel III capital norms. Masala bonds are rupee denominated specialized debt instruments that can be floated in overseas markets only to raise capital. Banks in India have to comply with the global capital norms under Basel III by March 2019, three months later than the internationally agreed time frame by January 2019.

    India Successfully Test-Fires AAD Supersonic Interceptor Missile

    India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD) supersonic interceptor missile, capable of destroying any incoming ballistic missile at low altitude, from a test range in Odisha. This was the third supersonic interceptor test carried out this year in which an incoming ballistic missile target was successfully intercepted, within a 30km altitude of the earth’s atmosphere by an interceptor. The interceptor is a 7.5-meter long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system.

  • Anisa Wins Womens 25m Pistol with New National Record

    Sports Affairs: Haryana shooter Anisa Sayyed won the women’s 25m pistol gold with a new record at the ongoing 61st National Shooting Championship Competitions (61st NSCC), in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Anisa shot a new finals national record score of 33 to prevail over the Maharashtra duo of Shital Shivaji Thorat and Rahi Sarnobat, who won the silver and bronze medals respectively at the National Games Shooting Range.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modis Mann Ki Baat among most trending Twitter hashtags in 2017

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi's radio programme "Mann Ki Baat" was the most trending hashtag on Twitter in 2017, followed by #jallikattu and #GST.  The micro-blogging platform today said #Mannkibaat sparked a great deal of commentary all over the year, including a tweet from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar that went viral.  Mann Ki Baat is a radio programme hosted by the PM on the last Sunday of every month to address people of the nation on All India Radio, DD National, and DD News. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also emerged as the most mentioned personality on Twitter during the course of Gujarat elections, followed by Congress President Rahul Gandhi. 

    Paytm Becomes India's First Payments App to Cross 100 mn Downloads on Play Store

    India's largest mobile-first financial services platform, Paytm announced that its app crossed the 100 million milestones on Google Play Store in the second week of December 2017. This makes Paytm the country's first payments app to cross the 100 million downloads mark.  

    Abhay Appointed Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau

    Senior IPS officer Abhay was appointed Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).  He is at present working in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment to the post till November 18, 2019. The post was lying vacant after R R Bhatnagar took over as DG of CRPF in April 2017.

    President Inaugurated 100th Indian Economic Association Conference

    President Ramnath Kovind inaugurated the 100th Annual Conference of the Indian Economic Association at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur of Andhra Pradesh. The event will be held for four days. Indian Economic Association is a registered body of Indian economic professionals with an objective of providing a forum for debate and discussion of policy-oriented issues.     Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched Livestock Disease Forewarning –Mobile Application (LDF-Mobile App). The app is developed by ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI), Bengaluru. Apart from early warning, the app will also provide information about clinical samples for the diagnosis in case of the epidemic so that immediate action can be taken in case of the epidemic.

    India and Afghanistan launch second air cargo route, linking Kabul with Mumbai

    Mumbai received the first cargo of fruit from Kabul. The consignment comes after Kabul-New Delhi the second air corridor between Afghanistan and India was opened by sending fruits from the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.  Afghanistan was historically our window to the Central Asian landlocked countries and was connected through long-distance trade with the western part of India. The air connectivity now established through the air freight corridor will provide Afghanistan greater access to markets in India and will allow Afghan businessmen to leverage India's economic growth and trade networks for its benefit.

  • IRDAI Norms Allow Insurers to Begin Offshore Business From GIFT IFSC

    Sectoral regulator IRDAI issued regulations for insurance firms to carry out offshore business from Gujarat-based GIFT International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). With this, Insurance operations will get a major boost. Under the regulations, for the first time in the country, foreign insurers are permitted to open IFSC Insurance Office (IIO) at GIFT IFSC. GIFT IFSC already hosts three major insurance players, GIC Re, New India and ECGC.  

    Commercial Flight Nod for Made-in-India Plane Dornier 228

    The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) allowed Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)- manufactured Dornier 228 to be used for civilian flights. The 19-seater aircraft has, till now, been used by defence forces and is the first plane to be made in the country for commercial flights. HAL can sell this plane to airlines in India and it can be used by them for regional flights under the Indian government's ambitious UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) scheme. 

    Samsung, Axis Bank Tie-up to Offer 'Bill Payments' on Samsung Pay

    Smartphone manufacturer Samsung launched its 'Bill Payments' on its flagship payments service, Samsung Pay in partnership with Axis Bank. With the introduction of 'Bill Payments', consumers will be able to pay their utility bills seamlessly through Samsung Pay, set reminders and search favourite biller based on their current location.

    Three Hundred Eighteen Million Loan Agreement Signed with World Bank for Farmers in Tamil Nadu

    The Government of India and the World Bank signed a $318 million loan agreement for the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization Project to promote climate resilient agriculture technologies to improve water management practices and increase market opportunities for small and marginal farmers. About 500,000 farmers, of which a majority are small and marginal, are expected to benefit from improved and modernized tank irrigation systems. The $318 million loan from the IBRD has a 5-year grace period and a maturity of 19 years.

    Uttar Pradesh Introduces New Power Scheme

    Uttar Pradesh launched a free household power connection scheme for the poor in the state to mark former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary. The government has a target of covering 16 million by 2018-end, driven by Yogi Adityanath government’s motto ‘Prakash hai to Vikas hai’ (the barometer of development is light). The government has also introduced Kisan Uday Yojana, a novel scheme for farmers. The scheme would cover 10 lakh farmers by 2022, would lead to 35 percent saving on power consumption.

    Jai Ram Thakur Took Oath as 6th CM of Himachal Pradesh

    Senior BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur took oath as the 6th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the historic Ridge Ground of Shimla. He has replaced Virbhadra Singh. A five-time MLA, Mr Thakur won Siraj Assembly seat of Mandi district this time. Governor Aacharya Devvrat administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Thakur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present at the swearing-in ceremony. This was the first time when the Prime Minister attended the oath-taking ceremony of the Chief Minister in the state.

    Saudi Arabia Hosts World Chess Games

    Saudi Arabia is hosting a world chess tournament for the first time, nearly two years after the country’s top cleric issued a religious edict against playing the board game. The tournament has been named as the King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. The world’s top three chess players from Norway, Armenia and Azerbaijan are participating in the tournament.
