Union Textiles Minister Zubin Irani on 12 January 2017 announced that Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 8835 crore were signed in textile sector. The MoUs were signed during 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017 in Gandhinagar.The MoUs cover different sectors of textiles such as textile parks, textile processing, equipment, carpet production, etc. Textile Sector: Gujarat Scenario: Gujarat is known by various names such as Textile State of India, Manchester of the East and Denim Capital of India. The State is a leader in textiles with more than 1500 medium and large textile units. Gujarat's textile market is estimated to be around 25 billion US dollars by 2017. Gujarat produces 29% of India’s total cotton production.

Former Union minister Manish Tewari has been appointed as a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the South Asia Center of the Atlantic Council, a leading US think-tank on policy matters. At the council, Tewari will focus on developing programmes aimed at strengthening US-India ties, a statement released by his office said.

The board of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) appointed Rajesh Gopinathan as the new chief executive officer and managing director in place of N Chandrasekaran who has been appointed as the chairman of Tata Sons, effective February 21, 2017. Former world and Asian champion, L Sarita Devi, will mark her plunge as India’s first woman boxing professional when she takes on seasoned Hungarian Zsofia Bedo in her first bout in Imphal, Manipur on January 29, organisers announced on Thursday. After Vijender Singh put India on the map of professional boxing, the 31-year-old Sarita will follow suit but her initiation in the professional ranks is expected to be tough as Zsofia has 59 professional bouts to her credit, with 19 victories.

Tata Sons on 12 January 2017 appointed Natarajan Chandrasekaran as its Executive Chairman. With this appointment, Chandrasekaran becomes the first non-Parsi person to head Tata group. He will take charge of the company on 21 February 2017.The Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Chandrasekaran, will succeed Cyrus Mistry, who was removed as group Chairman of Tata Sons in October 2016. In absence of Cyrus Mistry, Ratan Tata was looking after the company as the interim chairman. Cyrus Mistry ousted as Tata Sons chief; Ratan Tata returns in interim. The 53-year-old old businessman is only the third non-Tata after Nowroji Saklatwala and Cyrus Mistry to be named as Tata Sons chairman.The decision to appoint Chandrasekaran was as per the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Committee and was finalised at the company’s board meeting in Mumbai.An official release from the company read, “This is as per the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Committee. Chandrasekaran shall take charge from February 21, 2017”.The Board of Directors of Tata Sons believes that Chandrasekaran will inspire the entire Tata group worth of the 103-billion US dollar.
