Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu will officially launch the Sports Ministry's much- awaited National Sports Talent Search Portal at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on August 28. The portal will provide a three step simple process for registration, profile creation and upload of achievements. It will be available in English and other regional languages so that it is easier for any boy or girl who is talented in a particular sport to upload his or her achievements from any part of the country.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government decided to build an Eco-Park on over 34 acres of land reclaimed from encroachers in the state's Rajouri district. The park is a first-of-its-kind project in the region. It will have a botanical garden, a cactus garden, a cafeteria and other amenities. E-waste removal from Kerala schools begun with about 12,500 kg being disposed statewide on a single day under a program aiming to clear accumulated junk, reportedly estimated at over one crore kg. It is aimed at disposing e-Waste such as desktop computers, CRT monitors, laptops, disk drives, printers, UPS, camera, speaker system, television, network components and generators from 10,000 odd schools and educational offices in the state.

The CA Institute of India signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN). Nilesh Vikamsey, President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and Prakash Jung Thapa, President--ICAN exchanged the MoU. It mainly aims to establish mutual co-operation for the advancement of accounting knowledge, professional and intellectual development, advancing the interests of their respective members and positively contributing to the development of the accounting profession in Nepal and India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced immediate assistance of Rs 500 crore to flood ravaged Bihar. He held detailed review meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over relief operations, compensation and rehabilitation work in flood affected areas. Reserve Bank of India appointed committee on Household Finance suggested that banks link their home loan rates to the RBI's repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks. In the past three years, the central bank has reduced the policy rate by 200 basis points, but the weighted average lending rates have fallen by 145 basis points.

President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to declare an indefinite ban on transgender individuals joining the military, but he appeared to leave open the possibility of allowing some already in uniform to remain in the military. The Obama administration in June 2016 changed longstanding policy declaring that troops could serve openly as transgender individuals.  Around 2,500 transgender personnel may be serving on active duty, and 1,500 in the reserves.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee has recommended that no Genetically Modified (GM) crop should be introduced unless the biosafety and socio economic desirability is evaluated in a transparent process. The recommendation was made by the department-related parliamentary standing committee on science and technology and environment and forest. The Committee also recommended that the Environment Ministry (MoEFCC) should examine the impact of GM crops regularly.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the grid-connected rooftop solar project through the net-metering system. He also launched the web portal of the rooftop solar program. Under the program, the plants install solar plants on their rooftops and consume the generated solar power during the day time. The investment on a rooftop solar system is about Rs 70,000 per KW.

Union Commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman constituted a task force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure “India’s economic transformation”. The committee will focus on a wide spectrum of areas including agriculture and transportation. The panel will comprise 18 experts, academics, researchers and industry leaders and will explore possibilities to leverage AI for development across various fields. The task force will be headed by V. Kamakoti, a professor in the department of computer science and engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
