The Indian Navy has begun a joint maritime exercise with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea to further deepen combat coordination between the two navies. Guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai, stealth frigate INS Trishul and fleet tanker INS Aditya are taking part in the 'Varuna' exercise which will continue till April 30. The 'Varuna' series of exercises began in 2000 and have grown into an institutionalized form of interaction between the two navies.

Saudi Arabia has been elected to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women The Middle Eastern kingdom was one of 12 new countries elected to the UN body in a secret ballot. It will serve a four-year term beginning next year, according to a statement from the UN Economic and Social Council. The role of the UN's Commission on the Status of Women is to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.

 Jharkhand government website made Aadhaar details of more than 10 lakh people public.  Union Ministry of Water and Sanitation's website has now made Aadhaar numbers public. The Aadhaar numbers that went public belonged to the beneficiaries of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin. The details were removed from the website after the news of the breach emerged.

Northeast India's sixth and largest Information Technology (IT) hub was inaugurated here on Monday to boost employment and e-governance besides to export software technology. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, accompanied by IT and Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Director General Omkar Rai inaugurated the IT hub, set up at a cost of Rs 50 crore  IT hub would help to create employment opportunities for the IT educated youths and to further extend the e-governance to the door step of people.

India’s first and longest ropeway to connect Mumbai with the famous Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea is planned to be constructed by the Mumbai Port Trust. The 8-km ropeway will begin from Sewri in Mumbai’s east coast and end at Raigad district’s Elephanta Island, globally renowned for Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It will be India’s first ropeway across the sea.

"SBI and CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate and work towards the development of the real estate sector, specifically through the affordable housing and green housing projects. The MoU will be in force for a period of 3 years. For consumers, SBI has launched an exclusive tailor made scheme for affordable housing, 'SBI Hamara Ghar', which will ease the process and enable maximum number of consumers to avail home loan for these projects.

Bihar Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council on Monday unanimously adopted the Bihar Goods and Service Tax (GST) Bill, 2017 along with Bihar Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2017. With the passage of the bills, Bihar has become the second state, after Telangana, to ratify the legal framework for the rollout of the GST in the state. Chief minister Nitish Kumar was present in the assembly when commercial taxes minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav moved two GST-related bills.

The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) announced today that Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi will take part in a WHO-coordinated pilot implementation programme that will make the world’s first malaria vaccine available in selected areas, beginning in 2018.  The injectable vaccine, RTS,S, was developed to protect young children from the most deadly form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. RTS,S will be assessed in the pilot programme as a complementary malaria control tool that could potentially be added to the core package of WHO-recommended measures for malaria prevention.

Renowned Director and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath has won the Dadasaheb Phalke award for the year 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the film industry. He will be the 48th recipient of the award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema, which consists of a golden lotus, a cash prize of Rs10 lakh and a shawl. President Pranab Mukherjee will confer the award on him at a ceremony on May 3, 2017, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke award committee to recognize the 87-year-old film industry icon was approved by Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

India's military expenditure grew around 8.5 percent in 2016, making it the world's fifth largest spender at $55.9 billion, figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The USA  remains the world's largest military spender registering a growth of 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 to $611 billion. China is second on the list spending $215 billion, an increase of 5.4 percent. Russia increased its spending by 5.9 percent to $69.2 billion, making it the third largest spender.
