27 July 2021 Current Affairs:The Rudreswara Temple (also known as the Ramappa Temple) in Mulugu district, Telangana, has been added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Ramappa Temple is the only nomination proposed by the government for the 2019 UNESCO World Heritage List.

About Rudreswara (Ramappa) Temple:
♦ Recherla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva, built the Rudreswara temple during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire in 1213 AD.
♦ Ramalingeswara Swamy is the presiding deity in this temple.
♦ It is also called as the Ramappa Temple, named after the sculptor performing work in the temple for 40 years.
♦ The temple is built on a 6-foot-high star-shaped platform, with intricate carvings on the walls, pillars, and ceilings attesting to the Kakatiya sculptors' unique skill.
♦ The "sandbox technique" was used to build the foundation, the flooring is granite, and the pillars are basalt.
♦ The lower part of the temple is consists of red sandstone, and the white gopuram is built with light bricks that are said to float on the water.
♦ The unique Kakatiya-style temple complex, unique only in the area, confirms the highly evolved aesthetic proportions of temples and town gateways in southern India.
♦ The beauty of the temple captivated European merchants and travellers, with one remarking that it was the "brightest star in the galaxy of mediaeval Deccan temples."
