Trinamool congress leads in Kanthi-Dakshin
13 April 2017 Current Affairs:

Nearly at the end of the counting in Kanthi-Dakshin [South] by-election in Purba [East] Medinipur district in south Bengal, ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is comfortably ahead of its nearest rival by a margin of about 40,000 votes. But significantly Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced the Communists and the Congress in Kanthi Dakshin, once considered a bastion of Communist Party of India (CPI).After 14 rounds of counting, TMC got little over 85,000 votes, while the BJP got about 45,000, decimating the Left Front and the Congress.CPI polled 14,000 votes, while Congress got little over 1200 votes. However, the counting is still on and the results are yet to be declared.Even in 2016 Assembly election– about a year back– in West Bengal, the Left-Congress alliance did reasonably well in Kanthi-Dakshin constituency. In the 2016 poll the alliance bagged the second position, after TMC, with about 60,000, approximately 35 %, votes. The Left Front and the Congress contested separately in the by-poll.
