Syria is Believed to Have Used Chemical Weapons 17 Times - OPCW

08 June 2021 Current Affairs:The head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons told the UN Security Council that his organization's experts had investigated 77 allegations against Syria and concluded that chemical weapons had been used in 17 of them.

About OPCW:
♦ It is an international organisation established in 1997 by the Chemical Weapons Convention to implement and enforce the terms of the non-proliferation treaty, which prohibits signatory states from using, stockpiling, or transferring chemical weapons.
♦ According to the OPCW-UN Relationship Agreement signed in 2001, the OPCW reports on its inspections and other activities to the UN through the office of the Secretary General.
♦ "For its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons", the organisation was received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013.
♦ The OPCW is authorised to conduct inspections to ensure that signatory states are abiding by the convention.
