Survey of India Has Been Granted A Conditional Exemption from The Unmanned Aircraft System Rules

With this permission, Survey of India will be able to conduct Large Scale Mapping (LSM) using drones.

14 June 2021 Current Affairs:The Survey of India (Sol) has been granted conditional exemption from the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021 by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Highlights:
♦ Under the central government's SVAMITVA scheme, permission to deploy drones for large-scale mapping of inhabited areas of villages has been granted.
♦ With this permission, Survey of India will be able to conduct Large Scale Mapping (LSM) using drones.
♦ Aerial surveillance would produce high-resolution, accurate maps that would be used to grant ownership and property rights.
♦ Property cards would be issued to rural household owners based on these maps or data.

Survey of India:
It is the country's national surveying and mapping organisation, reporting to the Ministry of Science and Technology. It was founded in 1767 as the Indian Government's oldest scientific department. As the nation's Principal Mapping Agency, the Survey of India has a special responsibility to ensure that the country's domain is explored and mapped appropriately, to provide base maps for expeditious and integrated development, and to ensure that all resources contribute fully to the progress, prosperity, and security of our country now and for future generations. It is led by the Surveyor-General of India, whose office is in Dehradun.
