04 April 2017 Current Affairs: Shri B.P. Kanungo (Bibhu Prasad Kanungo) of Odisha took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
The Government of India, on March 11, 2017 has appointed him as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, for a period of three years from the date of his taking over charge of the post on or after April 3, 2017.
About B.P. Kanungo:- Shri Kanungo was Executive Director of the Reserve Bank before being elevated to the post of Deputy Governor.
Shri Kanungo, a career central banker, joined the Reserve Bank of India in September 1982. He has worked in several functional areas of the banks.
Born on May 5, 1959, Shri Kanungo holds a Master’s degree in humanities from Utkal University, besides holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
Three other Deputy Governors of RBI are: S.S. Mundra, N. S. Vishwanathan and Viral V. Acharya.
About RBI:- Establishment:- The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Calcutta but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.
