12 April 2021 Current Affairs:A suspected outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has killed 276 domestic pigs in the Longri region of Mizoram. As part of preventive measures, local authorities restricted the procurement and supply of live pigs from the affected areas and surrounding areas.

Highlights:
♦ ASF is a highly contagious and fatal animal disease that infects domestic pigs and wild boars and usually causes acute forms of hemorrhagic fever.
♦ It was first discovered in Africa in the 1920s.
♦ The mortality rate is close to 100%, and since fever cannot be cured, the only way to stop its spread is to culling animals.
♦ ASF does not pose a threat to humans because it will only spread from animals to other animals.
♦ According to FAO, “its extremely high potential for cross-border transmission puts all countries in the region at risk and once again allows the specter of ASF to escape from Africa. This is an increasingly important aspect of global food security and household income. Strategic diseases"
