The frog was discovered in 2012 and was thought to be a member of the already classified Pristimantis family.
According to the scientific journal Zookeys, recent DNA analysis confirmed that the frog is a new species.
An international group of biologists led by doctors Abel Batista of Panama and Konrad Mebert of Switzerland discovered the new specimen of the tropical amphibian in Cerro Chucant, a private reserve in the province of Darién.
It was named after Greta Thunberg after the conservation nonprofit The Rainforest Trust held an auction in which the winner was given the opportunity to name new species.
