Memorial for Abdul Kalam to be opened at Dilli Haat
06 April 2016 Current Affairs: The Delhi government will build a memorial for former president APJ Abdul Kalam at Dilli Haat, INA.The memorial, which will have the notes, books, clothes and other personal items of the former president, will be opened to the public on July 27 – Kalam’s death anniversary.The family supported us and was glad to hand over the things to us. The memorial will be set up at Dilli Haat. Till that is done, the articles will be displayed in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha,” culture minister Kapil Mishra said.In November, the Delhi Assembly passed a resolution to set up a knowledge centre in the city to honour Kalam.The AAP had severely criticised the central government for allotting Kalam’s official bungalow – 10 Rajaji Marg - to Union Tourism and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma.Kalam’s grand nephew, APJ Sheikh Salim, had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party after the residence was not converted into a memorial.The Delhi government had constituted a team to safely bring Kalam’s belongings back from Rameswaram. They were sent to his family members in Rameshwaram when the bungalow was allotted to Sharma.
