09 September 2020 Current Affairs:Kerala topped the list of the most literate state in India in the National Statistical Office (NSO) survey. The literacy rate of Kerala is 96.2%. Andhra Pradesh stood last with 66.4% literacy rate. The report was released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Highlights:
♦ The report by NSO was titled “Household Social Consumption on Education in India”.
♦ The report provides state-wise details of education among people above the age of 7.
♦ The survey used the date between July 2017 and June 2018 as base data.
♦ As per the report, India’s overall literacy rate stands at 77.7%.
♦ The literacy rate in rural India is 73.5% and 87.7% in urban areas.
♦ The report stated that 84.7% of males and 70.3% of females above the age of seven are literate.
♦ The survey showed around 4% of the rural population and 23% of the urban population has access to computers. It stated that about 24% of households in India, which is 15% in rural areas and 42% in urban areas, have access to the internet.
♦ Delhi stands at the second spot with 88.7% literacy rate. It is followed by Uttarkhand at 87.6% and Himachal Pradesh at 86.6%.
♦ Also, Rajasthan occupied the second-last spot with 69.7% literacy rate. It is preceded by Bihar at 70.9%, Telangana at 72.8%, and Uttar Pradesh at 73%.
The Impact Rankings for 2022 have been announced by the Times Higher Education (THE). India has eight universities in the top 300 universities in the world.
