Italy’s Elia Viviani wins gold in Men's Omnium at Rio Olympics
16 August 2016 Current Affairs: Italy’s Elia Viviani won gold in the men's omnium cycling track at the Rio Olympics on 15 August 2016.

On the other hand, Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish won the silver and Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark took the bronze.

Elia Viviani : Born on 7 February 1989, Elia Viviani is an Italian racing cyclist.He rides for Team Sky.On 10 May 2015, he grabbed his first Grand Tour stage victory at the Giro d'Italia, winning stage 2 in a bunch sprint before Moreno Hofland and Andre Greipel.

Omnium : An omnium is a multiple race event in track cycling. Historically, the omnium has had a variety of formats. In recent years, road racing has adopted the term to describe multi-day races that feature the three primary road race events.

The omnium was reintroduced into the World Championships as a five race format for men in 2007 and for women in 2009.

The omnium was changed in 2010 by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to include the elimination race and the distances of the events were lengthened to favour endurance cyclists.The omnium replaced the individual pursuit, the points race and the Madison at the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2012.
