Israel passes law legalising 4000 homes in occupied West Bank
08 February 2017 Current Affairs: Israel’s Parliament (Knesset) has passed a law retroactively legalising about 4,000 homes built in Area C of the occupied West Bank.

The law was passed by 60 votes to 52. The new law states that the original Palestinian landowners will be compensated with money or alternative land.

It covers Israeli settlements and outposts built on private Palestinian land in the Area C. Under it, outposts, the settler homes not approved by the government, are deemed illegal.

Most countries consider these settlements as illegal and an obstacle to peace as they reduce and fragment the territory Palestinians want for a viable state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

However, Israel disputes this and cites historical, biblical and political connections to the land as well as security needs.
