INSV Mhadei Flagged Off with an all-women crew
14 November 2016 Current Affairs: Indian Navy Sailing Vessel (INSV) Mhadei with an all-women crew was flagged off from Goa to Cape Town, South Africa. The vessel was flagged-off at the Boat Pool of INS Mandovi on 9 November 2016 by Rear Admiral Monty Khanna, Commandant Naval War College.

The vessel that will reach Cape Town on 15 December 2016 will be participating in the “Cape to Rio Race” (Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro). The race will start from Cape Town on 26 December 2016.

Voyage : The women officers have already sailed to Mauritius during peak monsoons and so have the experience of handling the long journey till Cape Town.

It consists four legs:

Goa-Cape Town

Cape Town- Rio de Janeiro (the actual race)

Rio de Janeiro – Goa

Navy has prepared four sets of crew for all four legs. The Purpose was to prepare a larger base of adventure loving seafarers.The present leg of sailing up to Cape Town is being undertaken by an all-woman crew. The captain of the vessel is Lt. Cdr Vartika Joshi.

The ‘Cape Town to Rio race’ will be undertaken by a mixed crew of men and women headed by Capt. Atool Sinha, the officer-in-charge of the recently established Ocean Sailing Node of the Navy.Capt. Sinha is an Asian Games silver medalist.The return legs would have separate sets of crew.

The Cape Town to Rio race will be the longest continent to continent yacht race in the Southern hemisphere with a total length of 6500kms across the South Atlantic Ocean. A fleet of at least 50 yachts are expected to participate in it.

INSV Mhadei is expected to return in May 2017.
