India wins 2016 SAFF Women's Championship
05 January 2017 Current Affairs: India has defeated Bangladesh 3-1 to win the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal.

With this, India fetched the 4th consecutive SAFF Women's Championship title.

The early goal in the finals was scored by India’s Dangmei Grace in the 12th minute. In the second half of the game, goal from India’s Sasmita Malik and Indumathi helped the Indian women grab the title.

SAFF Women's Championship : The SAFF Women's Championship is also referred to as the South Asian Football Federation Women's Cup.It is the main association football competition of the women's national football teams.

It is governed by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).The Championship is contested by the national teams of the South Asian Football Federation.The SAFF members are India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.The Championship is held once in every two years.

Until now, India has won every edition of the Championship. Before defeating Bangladesh in the finals of the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship, India has always defeated Nepal in the finals of the tournament.

The 2016 SAFF Women's Championship was the fourth edition of the SAFF Women's Championship.

India was awarded the hosting rights of the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship in January 2016. It was the first time India had hosted the Championship.

South Asian Football Federation : The South Asian Football Federation is an association of the football playing nations in South Asia.It was founded in 1997.

Its founding members are Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Bhutan joined the SAFF in 2000 while Afghanistan joined in 2005.

In February 2015, Afghanistan officially left the SAFF for the new Central Asian Football Association.
