23 July 2021 Current Affairs:The Haryana's IDSP National Surveillance Unit, will conduct an epidemiological investigation of the 1st human case of avian influenza (Bird Flu).

Highlights:
♦ Haryana's IDSP State Surveillance Unit has launched an epidemiological investigation into the country's first documented human case of bird flu, an 11-year-old boy who died of the infection at AIIMS recently.
♦ The child was identified as the first human case of H5Nx in Gurgaon, Haryana. In late June, the boy was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) at AIIMS.
♦ The animal husbandry department has not found any suspected cases of avian influenza in the area, and has strengthened surveillance within 10 kilometers as a preventive measure. Furthermore, the NCDC is conducting an epidemiological investigation in collaboration with the animal husbandry department and the State government surveillance unit, and appropriate public health measures have been implemented.

About the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP):
♦ It is a major national health programme implemented across all states and UTs as part of the National Health Mission.
♦ The programme's primary objective is to maintain/strengthen a decentralised lab-based IT-enabled disease surveillance system for epidemic-prone diseases in order to monitor disease trends and detect and respond to outbreaks in their early stages through trained Rapid Response Teams (RRTs).
♦ The IDSP was established in 2004 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)
