09 October 2019 Current Affairs: John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2019. The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. 

Awarded for:
The researches were awarded for the development of lithium-ion batteries. Their invention laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil fuel-free society.
Advantages of Li-ion batteries: 
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have revolutionized the world of technology. These batteries entered the market in 1991.  These batteries are used to power various day-to-day products such as smartphones, laptops and even electric vehicles.

Awardees:
1) John B. Goodenough is working at the University of Texas in the US. 
2) M. Stanley Whittingham is a professor at Binghamton University in the US. 
3) Akira Yoshino is currently a professor at Meijo University in Japan.

Nobel Prize:
The Nobel Prize was established by the will of Alfred Nobel, a businessman, chemist, engineer, inventor, and philanthropist. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It is one of the 5 Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry award has been awarded 110 times to 180 individuals between 1901 and 2018.
