December 2 is observed as National Pollution Control Day

02 December 2020 Current Affairs:December 2 is designated as "National Pollution Control Day" annually in the view of commemorating the people those their lives in the unfortunate Bhopal gas tragedy that occurred on this day in 1984.

Highlights:
♦ The three main goals of National Pollution Control Day:
-    Raise people’s awareness of increasing air pollution and educate people on how to control and manage industrial disasters.
-    Make everyone aware of the importance of pollution control behaviours and methods, and reduce pollution levels
-    Control/prevent industrial pollution caused by human negligence.
♦ This day shows how serious air pollution is. According to the National Health Portal (NHPI) of India, about 7 million people die from air pollution every year worldwide. 
♦ NHPI also pointed out that the situation is so bad that 9 out of 10 people in the world cannot get safe air. Air pollution is the cause of the destruction of the ozone layer. 
♦ Pollutants in the air may pass through protective barriers in the body and may damage your lungs, brain and heart.

Bhopal Gas Tragedy:
Last year (2019) marks the 35th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy, at midnight on December 2, 1984, which claimed thousands of lives. The Bhopal gas tragedy occurred after the highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas entered and approached the area near the alliance, Bhopal's Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant was considered the world's worst industrial disaster. According to official data, the incident claimed the lives of 2,259 people immediately after the incident, but the Madhya Pradesh government has confirmed that a total of 3787 people died from the gas release. The National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) is the national governing body responsible for administering industry conduct inspections to understand whether they comply with environmental regulations.
