21 March 2019 Current Affairs:
A colourful cyclothon was organised in Berhampur on the occasion of World Sparrow Day, March 20th, to mark the progress of making Ganjam the first sparrow-friendly district of Odisha. The event aimed at spreading awareness about the rising number of vehicles causing air pollution, which, in turn, affects the avian population.
A large number of cyclists donning sparrow masks along with a sparrow mascot took part in this cycle rally organised by youth environmental organisation Anchalika Vikash Parishad (AVP) and the Forest Department.
A project to spread out sparrow conservation through artificial nests and feeders was launched in Ganjam district on September 6, 2018, by AVP with the Forest Department’s support. The first phase was completed in February with sparrow conservation through artificial nests taken up in at least one village in each of the 22 blocks of Ganjam district. It now targets to take sparrow conservation to each of 503 panchayats of Ganjam.
