27 February 2017 Current Affairs: The Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Raghubar Das announced on 26 February 2017 that his government would soon ban the use of polythene bags in the State.
The announcement was made by the Chief Minister after laying the foundation of Navjeevan Kust Ashram (Lepers colony) at Deonagar and the Chakulia Urban Water project. The final decision on the imposition of the ban would be taken during the state’s next cabinet meeting.
The main objective behind the ban is to develop Jharkhand as “Clean Jharkhand, Green Jharkhand and Swach Jharkhand“.
Polythene bags have been found responsible for the death of cows in many cases in the state.
The bags have also lead to the choking of drains in many areas.
After the imposition of the ban, those found holding or using polythene bags would face a jail term. Further, the government plans to provide clothes to Mahila Sakhis Mandals to make bags.
Besides this, the state government of Jharkhand has also signed a MoU worth over ₹63 crore with Jamshedpur Utility Services Company (Jusco), a subsidiary of Tata Steel, for Deonagar and Chakulia Urban Water project as well as for the maintenance and renovation for the Birsanagar Bagunhatu Water Project in East Jamshedpur.
According to the Jharkhand Urban Development Minister, C P Singh, the work for implementing the water projects in all municipal areas of the state has either taken off or is about to get started.
