08 October 2018 Current Affairs:
In the International Border with Pakistan in Jammu, nearly 350 watchtowers which were made of tin and mud and with thatched roofs have been replaced with concrete structures. Apart from this, 450 more such structures are in the pipeline.
The 740-km Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir is under the operational control of the Army and the 192-km International Border in Jammu is manned by the BSF. The snipers in Pakistan can hit the BSF personnel in observation towers as the tin structures are not robust enough to protect the soldiers. In 2018, 13 BSF soldiers, which is the highest casualty in the past five years, had been killed along the border.
The BSF recently operationalised the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) along a 11-km stretch on the border to detect and stop infiltration from Pakistan. Through advanced sensors and radars, the CIBMS has the capability to detect any type of movement on the ground, water or below the ground.
