Bhutanese cargo was flagged off from Dhubri in Assam to Narayanganj in Bangladesh
17 July 2019 Current Affairs: Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) ship, in its first movement, that carried Bhutanese cargo was flagged off from Dhubri in Assam to Narayanganj in Bangladesh. It will sail over Brahmaputra River and the Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route.
For the first time ever, an Indian waterway is being used for transport of cargo between two countries, using India for transit.

Waterways between Bhutan and Bangladesh:
Bhutan has been exporting significant quantity of stone to Bangladesh via land route by trucks from Phuentsholing in Bhutan which is 160 Kms from IWAI’s Dhubri jetty in Assam. The introduction of waterways will decrease the cost of transportation by at least 30%. It will also cutdown the tavel time by 8 to 10 days.
This new sea route development is under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting cargo transportation via inland waterways.
The IWAI ship carries 1000 MT of stones aggregates. In return Bangladesh will send jute and rice to Bhutan in same vessel.

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI):
Formed on: 27 October 1986
Headquarters: Uttar Pradesh
Chairman: Jalaj Shrivastava
It functions under Ministry of Shipping. The Statutory authority regulates the Inland waterways for shipping and navigation. IWAI undertakes projects for development and maintenance of Inland Waterway Terminal infrastructure on National Waterways.
