The event was developed in 2010 by the UN Department of Public Information to "celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity and promote equal use of all six official languages within the Organization."
Because it marks the anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's death in Spain and the birth and death of William Shakespeare in England, the date was chosen.
