10 December 2018 Current Affairs: Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party elected Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel as its new leader.

She likely will lead the CDU into the 2021 federal elections and could become the country's next Chancellor.

She narrowly won the party contest over corporate lawyer Friedrich Merz with 51.75% of the vote.

Merkel announced in October that she would step down as CDU leader but will serve as the Chancellor for the remaining three years of her term.
