Amul all set to invest Rs 200 Cr in Bengal
23 December 2016 Current Affairs: Amul, the popular Indian dairy cooperative is planning to invest Rs 200 Cr in a Centralised Milk Processing Plant in West Bengal.

The plant is located at Kandua Food Park in Howrah district’s Sankrail town. The work on the plant is expected to start in 2017 and be completed by the end of 2018. The proposed plant will process milk and other products such as UHT milk, ghee and yoghurt.

Kandua Food Park : It has been developed by WBIDC to cater to the needs of producers and manufacturers of food and agricultural products.

Built on the concept of an industrial cluster, the park is an attempt to bring together different agricultural processing units and their support facilities to one single location so that they all benefit from the shared infrastructure.

It comprises 25 plots with all facilities, including a fire station. The sizes of the plots vary from 0.5 acres to 4.45 acres.

Amul : Formed in 1946, the brand is owned by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers (KDCMPUL), the first Cooperative Milk Producers Union in Gujarat.

It is managed today by the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which was created by KDCMPUL in 1973.

The brand initiated the White Revolution, which made India the world’s largest producer of milk and its products.  It is currently known as the country’s largest food brand.

The brand recently ventured into the overseas online market through a partnership with one of the world’s largest e-commerce companies-Amazon.

The brand’s success is largely credited to Verghese Kurien, who is the founder and chairman of the GCMMF.
