AEG12 Inhibits Family Of Viruses

Research results may lead to treatments for viruses that affect millions of people around the world.

29 March 2021 Current Affairs:According to scientists from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and their collaborators, a mosquito protein called AEG12 can strongly inhibit the virus family that causes yellow fever, dengue fever, West Nile and Zika virus, and can also weaken Suppress the coronavirus,

Highlights:
♦ Researchers have discovered that AEG12 works by destroying the virus envelope and destroying its protective layer.
♦ This protein will not affect viruses without envelopes.
♦ At the molecular level, AEG12 can remove lipids
♦ Research results may lead to treatments for viruses that affect millions of people around the world.
♦ Although the researchers proved that AEG12 is the most effective against flavivirus (Zika, the virus family to which West Nile and other viruses belong), they believe that AEG12 may be effective against SARS-CoV-2.
♦ However, it will take years of bioengineering technology to make AEG12 a viable treatment for Covid-19.
