  • Prime Minister inaugurates International Basava Convention

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled translated volumes of Vachana in 23 Indian languages on the occasion of Basava Jayanti. This is the first ever celebration of Basava Jayanti at the national level in New Delhi. The translated volumes of Vachana was commissioned by the Basava Samithi at a cost of 2.5 crore rupees of which the Karnataka government has contributed 1 crore rupees. The celebrations also coincide with golden jubilee of Basava Samiti that was set up by former Vice President B D Jatti 1964 to spread in Basavannas message.

    Jehan Daruvala becomes 1st Indian to take pole in FIA F3 European Championship

    Jehan Daruvala, 18-year-old product of Force India Academy,(FIA)  became the first Indian to take pole in the F3 (Formula - 3) European series, securing the top spot on the starting grid for Race 1 of the second round of the championship in Monza, Italy. Jehan Daruvala topped the British racer Callum Illot (Prema Powerteam)

    Apple stops paying royalties to Qualcomm

    Apple and Qualcomm have been fighting relentlessly for a few months over royalty payments.  Apple confirmed that Qualcomm that it would stop pay the disputed licensing fees. Qualcomm confirmed the aggressive move and the revenue and profits would be lower than expected.

    Indian Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik wins gold medal in Moscow competition

    Internationally renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik from Odisha won the jury prize gold medal at the 10th Moscow Sand art Championship. The competition was held between 22nd and 28th April at Kolomenskoye, Moscow in Russia. The theme for the competition was "The world around us".  Pattnaik was the Indian representative in the competition, where twenty-five sculptors from different countries participated.

    Oorja-CAPFs Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament-2017

    The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) will conduct ‘Oorja’ – CAPFs Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament – 2017, throughout the country from May 1-15, 2017. The tournament will be jointly organized by CAPF under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will conduct the tournament in Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and the Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. Bruno Coutinho, an Arjuna Awardee, has been made as the brand ambassador for Oorja -2017 in Goa.

    4th National Standards Conclave meet to be held in New Delhi

    Department of Commerce, Government of India in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry, Bureau of Indian Standards and the National accrediation Board for Certification bodies and other knowledge partners is organising the 4th National Standards Conclave. It will be organized in New Delhi from May 1-2 The objective of the conclave is to bring awareness and prepare Industries.

    Kerala hosts country’s first ever transgender athletic meet

    Kerala has conducted the country’s first-ever transgender one-day athletic meet in Thiruvananthapuram. The event saw the participation of 132 participants belonging to 12 districts of the state. The event was jointly organised by Kerala sports council and Sexual Gender Minority Federation of Kerala. In the competition, six events were conducted, namely, 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres running; 100x 4 relay race, high jump and shot put.

    India's 1st book village to come up in Maharashtra

    From May 4, Bhilar village in Maharastra will become India’s first ‘book village’ where tourists and locals can come and read books, magazines, newspapers stacked at 25 premises. Bhilar already attracts a large number of tourists, who come to taste the locally produced strawberries. Bhilar, which has a population of about 10,000, and nearby areas produce around 100 tons of strawberry every year, earning them Rs 50 crore. And 90% of the village’s population is involved in strawberry farming.

    Uma Bharti launches Water Conservation Programme for Bundelkhand

    Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Sushri Uma Bharti today launched Bundelkhand water conservation programme at Bandri in Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh(MP). Sushri Bharti's Ministry has taken up new initiatives under National Ground Water Management Improvement Schemes (NGMIS) with an objective to effectively improve ground water conditions in stressed blocks, ensure sustainability of resource both quantitatively and qualitatively. Implementation of water conservation schemes 75 new water bodies with estimated cost of about Rs. 50 crores with tentative potential creation of 2500 dams would be taken up.

    Google CEO Pichai was paid 1,285 cr as compensation in 2016

    Google CEO Sundar Pichai received a compensation package of $200 million (1,285 crore) from parent firm Alphabet in his first year at the helm of the company. Pichai received a salary of $650,000 in 2016 besides a $198.7 million stock award, roughly double of his stock in 2015.

    Paytm to invest 10,000 crore in banking, financial services

    Paytm will invest Rs10,000 crore in its banking and financial services in the next three years and hopes to get the final approval for its payments bank operations . Paytm operates a mobile wallet and e-commerce marketplace over 1.5 billion transactions on its platform, the company now aims to cross the 4.5 billion mark this year.

    NABARD to speed up digitisation under E- Shakthi initiative

    The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) under its E- Shakthi initiative has so far digitised around 1.29 lakh self - help groups covering 14.86 lakh individuals in the country. The aim of the initiative is to digitise all  Self Help Group (SHG) under its Micro Credit and Innovations Department and reduce the drudgery of book keeping and cut the dependence on cash transactions. The pilot project at Ramgarh, Jharkhand & Dhule, Maharashtra in 2015.

    Government launches Test & Treat policy for HIV patients

    Union Health Minister JP Nadda has launched the Test and Treat policy for providing treatment to patients suffering from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The government will provide Anti- Retroviral Therapy (ART) treatment to the patients free of cost. HIV destroys the CD4 T cells in the body that strengthen immunity. People with HIV, who have a CD4 cell count below 200, are at significant risk of developing serious illnesses, and the government currently provides free treatment to people with a count of 400 and below.

    North Korea once again test-fires ballistic missile

    North Korea has test-fired a ballistic missile defying global pressure and warnings from the United States and its mainly, China. The test was conducted from the Pukchang region present in the north of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. The missile launched is expected to be a medium-range weapon known as a KN-17 and appears to have disintegrated within minutes of taking off.

    101-year-old Mann Kaur becomes World's oldest person to complete Auckland Skywalk

    101-year-old athlete Mann Kaur has become the oldest person to skywalk around Auckland’s famous landmark Sky Tower. Having set a new world record on the field, Kaur stepped out 192 metres above Auckland city to achieve the feat. Kaur broke Guinness World record for javelin with the throw of 5 metres and 12 centimetre in her final competition at the Trusts stadium in Waitakere, West Auckland.

    Researchers have created a fluid - filled transparent container called the biobag to simulate how foetuses float in amniotic fluid inside the uterus of their mothers. So far the device has only been tested on fetal lambs.

    The Day of remembrance of all victims of chemical Warfare was observed on April 29 by the United Nations (UN) . This commemoration will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare, as well as to reaffirm the commitment of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to the elimination of the threat of chemical weapons, thereby promoting the goals of peace, security, and multilateralism.

    India's first smart and green Highway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway for decongesting Delhi will be ready by August this year It has been built at a cost of Rs.11000 crore. At least 2.5 lakh trees will be on the both sides of the roads with solar panels.

    India wins 6 medals in 2nd leg of Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet

    India won six medals in the second leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet in Jiaxing, China. World junior record holder javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra took the silver. Neeraj also qualified for the IAAF World Championships to be held in London in August, 2017. India had won seven medals, including a gold and 4 silver in the first leg.

    Lavasa’s Committee on Allowance submits its report to Finance Minister

    The 'Committee on Allowance' headed by Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa submitted its final report to Finance Minister (FM) Arun Jaitley.  This report recommends for  'Higher Allowances' to central government employees as mentioned in the 7th pay commission. The Pay Commission had recommended hiking the HRA in the range of 8-24% Full implementation of panel recommendations will cost govt Rs 29,300 crore.

    ISRO to launch five satellites by 2017- end to boost communication capability

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch five communication satellites by the year-end . The satellites launched by the ISRO and their purposes in the areas of weather forecasting, disaster management, space exploration, geo-spatial applications, education and agriculture . ISRO and the Government has made GPS - aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GASAN) mandatory for all aircraft by 2019 to ensure safety and precision landing.

    India’s first E-Taxi trial run to begin in Nagpur from May

    India's first electric taxi (e- taxi) trial in the country would be launched in Nagpur from May 24. Mahindra and Mahindra is set to provide 200 taxis for the initiative. Electric car taxi is one of the ambitious projects and forms as a part of its United Nations Development Program (UNDP) millennium goals to tackle pollution. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway project:- The Rs 5,763-crore Eastern Peripheral Expressway project to decongest Delhi is on fast-track and will become India’s first 135 km green road to be lit entirely by solar panels and have advanced traffic system.

    IOC to build new oil terminal in Bihar to supply fuel to Nepal

    The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has planned to build a new oil terminal at Motihari in Bihar to supply fuel to Nepal via the planned pipeline up to Amlekganj in Nepal. The 69-km Motihari-Amlekganj pipeline will be built at a cost of Rs.325 crore. In August 2015, India and Nepal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a product pipeline.

  • Kazakhstan opens consulate in Chennai

    Kazakhstan has opened its honorary consulate in Chennai. The consulate will cover the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. It will be headed by well-known businessman Suraj Shantakumar.  This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Kazakhstan. Chennai is a major industrial center of India, and is considered the automotive capital of the country.

    India and Cyprus signed four agreements

    Indian PM Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades signed 4 Agreements, which are:-(i) Executive programme on culture, education and scientific cooperation for the years 2017 to 2020. (ii) Work plan under a programme of cooperation in agriculture for the period 2017-2018. (iii) Cooperation in the area of merchant shipping. (iv) To Boost air services between the two countries. Cyprus is the eighth largest foreign investor in India.

    Indian cultural center in Egypt holds seminar to deepen ties

    Indian cultural center in Egypt, serving as India's window to reach out to Egyptians, has organized a seminar aimed at maintaining and strengthening bilateral relations.  The function is organized by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC). The seminar titled as 'Cultural Festivals - Bridge between India and Egypt'. It was a part of MACIC's monthly seminar series involving youth, academicians, culture lovers, civil society to discuss the issue of bilateral interest.

    UNESCO to screen Indian short film as part of World Press Freedom Day celebrations

    The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation (UNESCO) to screen Rahul V. Chittella’s short film “Azaad” as a part of World Press Freedom Day event that is scheduled to be held from May 1-4 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The theme for the 2017 World Press Freedom Day is “Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies“. May 3 is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day every year to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom as well as to evaluate the freedom of press around the world.

    Haryana Government appoints BS Sandhu as State DGP

    The Haryana Government appointed senior IPS officer Baljit Singh Sandhu as the new Director General of Haryana Police (DGP). The 1984 batch IPS officer replacing K P Singh, who has been appointed as the Director General of Prisons. He was previously serving as the Chairman and MD of Haryana Police Housing Corporation.

    President conferred Jnanpith Award to poet Sankha Ghosh

    Sankha Ghosh bengal poet and literacy critic was honoured with 52nd Jnanpith Award which was awarded by President Pranab Mukherjee. The poet is a recipient of Sahitya Akademi and Padma Bhushan . Some of his famous works include Adim Lata- Gulmomay, Murkho Baro, Samajik Noy.

    El Salvador - First country to ban metals mining

    El Salvador is the first country to ban metals mining.  The law bans "prospection exploration, exploitation, extraction or processing of metallic minerals in El Salvador". The law enterted into force after being signed by President Salvador Sanchez Ceren.

    Paytm launches Digital gold

    Payments app Paytm launched Digital gold on its platform to allow customers to buy and sell gold through electronic platform. The first wealth management product was launched in partnership with gold refiner MMTC - PAMP. It offers a real time international pricing mechanism for the customers. Paytm claims users will be able to purchase 24 K 999.9 purity gold starting from 1 gram.

    FIFA confirmed that Video Assistant Referees will be used at 2018 World Cup

     International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the video Assistant Referees will be used in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The technology will be used only in decisions involving goals, penalty kicks and mistake identity. Video assistance was introduced for the first time in a FIFA in Japan last December.

    All-woman IRB (India Reserved Battalion) to be raised in Jammu and Kashmir

    The Home Ministry has planned to raise an all-woman India Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Jammu and Kashmir. The all-woman battalion will be one among the five IRBs that has been sanctioned by the Central government for the State last year. The cost of raising battalions would be Rs. 61 crore and 75% of the expenditure will be borne by the union government.

    Haryana’s town Ballabhgarh renamed as Balramgarh

    Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the renaming of Ballabgarh town in Faridabad as Balramgarh. “Ballabgarh is a town and a sub-division in Haryana, was founded by Balram Singh in 1739. Ballabgarh means ‘the fort of Balram’ In 2016, Manohar Lal Khattar renamed Gurgaon as Gurugram based on the history connection with Guru Dronacharya.

    R K Pachnanda appointed as new Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police

    The Central government appointed  R K Pachnanda as Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police. He is 1983 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) of West Bengal Cadre and had earlier served as the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force.(NDRF) He will be taking over from Krishna Chaudhary, who is set to retire in June this year.

    Bhubaneswar - First Indian city to win Pierre L’enfant Awards-2017

    Bhubaneswar has become the first Indian city to win Pierre L’enfant International Planning excellence award-2017 instituted by the American Planning Association (APA). Bhubaneswar has been chosen for the award for its good and advanced town planning and engaging its residents in the planning process.  The APA Awards jury has selected Five Excellence Award recipients in total who will be honoured at the Awards Luncheon at APA’s National Planning Conference in New York on May 8.  

    Union Government launched MSEFC portal and My MSME mobile app

    Union Minister for Urban development and housing M. Venkaiah Naidu launched Micro and small Enterprises Facilitation Council(MSEFC) Portal and My MSME app. They were launched as a part of digital India initiative from the perspective of the MSME sector in the country. With the access to the platform, micro and small enterprises will be able to file their delayed payment related grievances online. The grievances filed will be communicated through the email and sms instantly.

    Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan became the first Indian actor to deliver Technology ,Entertainment, Design(TED) at Vancouver, Canada. He spoke on various issues beginning from his startdom to the changes world has experienced with the introduction of internet. Shah Rukh Khan also partnered with TED to host the hindi version of the famous talk show.

    South Korea’s Hyundai subsidiary Kia Motors has signed an MoU with Andhra Pradesh govt to set up its first car manufacturing plant in Anantanagar. •    Invested Amount -  $1.1 billion •    It will bring a compact sedan and a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) to the market in 2019. •    India is the world's fifth biggest auto market.

    SAP launches solution to help SME's

    Enterprise application software maker Systems Applications Products (SAP) launched a solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).  SME's to help them to become compliant with the Goods and Service Tax (GST). SAP has launched 'GST in a box ', an all inclusive solution portfolio designed to help SME's. SAP has committed to provide businesses with necessary consultation and technology to efficiently adopt the GST regime through various initiatives.

    Donald Trump introduces biggest reform plan in US

    US president Donald Trump has introduced biggest tax reform plan in the history of United States . The income tax rates have been slashed from 39.6% to 35%.He proposed tax relief for families with child and dependent care expenses. The new plan proposes for a 15% corporate tax rate which is a sharp drop from the existing 35%. However, under the US law ,only the congress is empowered to make major changes to tax laws.

  • Srishti Kaur crowned as Miss Teen Universe 2017

    Srishti Kaur was crowned as Miss Teen Universe 2017 after beating 25 contestants from around the world at the annual beauty pageant. The event was held in Managua, the capital of Central American country Nicaragua. She also won the prize for best national costume. Samantha Pierre from Canada and Ary Trava from Mexico were the runners-up in the event. The event started six years ago, is organized by the Miss Universe organization for teens aged 15 to 19.

    Goverment launches UDAN for low cost regional flights

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched  "Ude desh ka aam naagrik" (UDAN), a scheme to help people to fly cheap to small towns. India's first national aviation (UDAN) policy launched in June last year. The lowest airfare is Rs. 2,500.

    Reserve Bank of India to issue new 5 and 10 coins

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon put into circulation new 5 coins to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Allahabad High Court.  New 10 coins have also been minted to commemorate the 125th year of National Archives of India. On the design of new Rs 5 coin, the coin’s face will bear an image depicting centre facade of Allahabad High Court Building emerging from the book. On the design of new Rs 10 coin, on the reverse of the coin, there will be an image of National Archives Building in the centre with inscription ‘125 YEARS’ below the image.

    Government sanctions 1 lakh houses worth 4,200 cr for urban poor

    The Central Government has sanctioned construction of over one lakh more houses for the urban poor with an investment of Rs 4,200 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana(PMAY). The government has now approved construction of over 18.75 lakh houses for Economically Weaker Sections in 2,151 cities and towns across the country. Madhya Pradesh tops the overall list of states in getting approvals with over 2.66 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY (Urban) with a total investment of Rs 18,283 crore. Tamil Nadu is second with over 2.52 lakh houses with a total project cost of Rs 9,112 crore.

    Cental Government announced 10 New Iconic places under the Swachh Bharat Mission Phase II

    The Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation Shri Narendra Singh Tomar announced 10 new Iconic places to be taken under the Phase II of Swachh Bharat. These ten new iconic places which are to be brought to a higher standard of swachhta and visitors’ amenities are 1. Gangotri 2. Yamunotri 3. Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain 4. Char Minar, Hyderabad 5. Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assissi, Goa 6. Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam 7. Gomateshwar in Shravanbelgola 8. Baijnath Dham, Devghar 9. Gaya Tirth in Bihar and 10. Somnath temple in Gujarat.

    NASA launches super balloon from New Zealand

    National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully launched its football-stadium-sized, heavy-lift Super Pressure Balloon (SPB) from Wanaka, New Zealand. The mission is designed to run 100 or more days floating at 110,000 feet (33.5 km) about the globe in the southern hemisphere's mid-latitude band. The balloon is designed by NASA to detect ultra-high energy cosmic particles from beyond the galaxy as they penetrate the earth's atmosphere.
