Sadbhavana Diwas or Harmony Day is celebrated on August 20 each year all over India to commemorate the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister of India named Rajiv Gandhi. Sadbhavana meaning - having good feelings for others. On this day, Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award is presented to commemorate the contribution made by Rajiv Gandhi for promoting the communal hormony, peace and national integration. Gopalkrishna Gandhi was declared as the winner of Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award for the year 2018. He is a retired IAS officer and was 22nd Governer of West Bengal served from 2004 to 2009. This is the 24th edition of Rajiv Gandhi National Sadhavana Award.

He struggled with a back injury while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL). He claimed 239 wickets in 153 one-day internationals, and 38 wickets in 30 T20 internationals for Australia.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be visiting Pakistan on 5th September 2018. He would be the first foreign dignitary to meet Mr.Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan.  After Donald Trump’s accusation of Islamabad’s terrorism, the relationship between Pakistan and the US nose-dived. The US Congress also passed a bill to cut its aid to Pakistan’s defence to USD 150 million, significantly below the historic level of more than USD one billion per year.  Mike Pompeo will hold talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on two major issues: (i) efforts to close ties between the two countries (ii) Pakistan’s support for a US-led move towards the Afghan peace process. After the meeting, Pompeo would leave for New Delhi to attend the 2+2 dialogue on September 6. Pompeo is expected to be accompanied by Alice Wells, Head of the Bureau for South Asian affairs at the State Department.

All India Financial Inclusion Survey (NAFIS), conducted by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in 2016 in 245 districts of 29 states covering 40,327 households, revealed that ♦ More than 88 per cent of rural households have bank accounts, ♦ Only about 24 per cent of the 88% of rural households use ATM services at least once in three months, ♦ The annual income of farmers increased 37.4 per cent to Rs 1,07,172 between 2012-13 and 2015-16, ♦ Among states, Punjab, Haryana and Kerala are the top three having average monthly income of Rs 23,133, Rs 18,496 and Rs 16,927, respectively.

Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar won bronze in 10m Air Rifle mixed Team Shooting event in Asian Games 2018, Indonesia. The team scored 429.9. It was a maiden Asian Games medal for Apurvi.  Chinese Taipei’s Yingshin Lin and Shaochuan Lu won the gold by scoring 494.1. The silver was won by Chinese pair Ruozhu Zhao and Haoran Yang who scored 492.5. Korea and Mongolia finished fourth and fifth respectively in the event held for the first time at the Games.

Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has opened his official residence, Raj Bhavan, for public viewing from August 16 to August 31. For the first time, citizens will get to explore the Raj Bhavan between 4 pm and 6.30 pm. Raj Bhavan, formerly known during British India as the Bangalore Residency, was built by Sir Mark Cubbon, who was the commissioner of Mysuru territory of the British empire between 1840 and 1842. The 19 bedrooms in the Bhavan were named after famous Indian rivers and mountains.

Bajrang Punia won gold in the final of the 65kg freestyle wrestling competition at the Asian Games 2018. He defeated Japan’s Daichi Takatani with a scoreline of 11-8. He became the winner of India’s 140th Asiad gold. Punia is the sole torch-bearer of Indian wrestling.  Punia said that he has fixed his eyes on bigger targets, the first of which would be the World Championships in October, with an Olympic quota at stake. He also said he dedicates his win to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

To reduce attacks on cash vaults and ATM frauds, the Home Ministry has issued a directive stating that no ATM will be refilled with cash after 9 pm in cities, 6 pm in rural areas and 4 pm in Naxal-affected areas from February 8, 2019. Every cash van will carry not more than ₹5 crore per trip. This move comes just a week after an estimated amount of Rs 94 crores was siphoned off from Cosmos bank in Pune.

Twenty-year-old Rishabh Pant took five catches on his debut Test match at Trent Bridge where India are playing England in five-match Test series. He is also the first Asian wicket-keeper and third in the world to take five catches in an innings on Test debut. Pant became the first Indian batsman to open his Test account with a six. Pant, who replaced an injured Dinesh Karthik, is the 291st Test player for India. Punjab police organized the first-ever workshop in collaboration with National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre New Delhi (NCIIPC) with an aim to prevent cybercrime threats on a real-time basis. It was organized by IT&T wing to sensitize the senior police officers about vulnerable issues of cybercrime, hacking, cyber threats and auditing.

Kerala government has arranged to deploy six health officers in each panchayat to prevent any outbreak of communicable diseases as the flood water has started to recede. The government has also announced that it will provide 36 lakhs textbooks free of cost to school children who had lost their books in the floods.  Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said that the Health Department has opened a control room in the office of the Director of Health Services which would act as a nodal point for addressing issues related to medical supply and deployment of personnel. It will also coordinate the functioning of the deployed medical camps and prepare for the possible outbreak of contagious diseases. Temporary primary health centres are to be opened in Thiruvalla and Pathanamthitta.

Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), India's only fifth-generation fighter aircraft, will make its first flight in 2032. The AMCA will fly with two GE-414 engines. It is being designed in a way that it can deflect away maximum radar waves and thus minimize its radar cross-section. It can also absorb the radio waves thereby reducing the radar footprint.  The Indian Air Force (IAF) has given land and provisions to the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to set up facilities for this project. IAF plans to produce a medium fifth-generation fighter aircraft based on the capabilities and expertise developed during the development of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). This aircraft programme is after the decision by IAF not to go ahead with the fifth-generation project with Russia.

IIT Delhi Director V. Ramgopal Rao said that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) must hire regular foreign faculty to break into top global rankings.  According to the QS World University Ranking 2017, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has ranked 162 and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) ranked 172. Based on 5 parameters the QS World University Ranking is evaluated. IITs lack in three parameters, namely foreign faculty, foreign students and faculty-student ratio. If the regular foreign faculties are permitted, the lacking faculty shortage can be met. As there are more PhD scholars in IIT than the Undergraduate students. Once the necessities are met the IITs will rank among the top 50 rankings.
