Anna Burns won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for fiction for Milkman, a vibrant, violent story about men, women, conflict and power set during Northern Ireland’s years of Catholic-Protestant violence.  She is the first writer from Northern Ireland to win the £50,000 (Rs.48 lakh) prize, which is open to English-language authors from around the world. She said her books took a long time to complete, and she has often struggled financially since her first novel, No Bones, was released in 2001.

Experts from cultural heritage organisation Europa Nostra have urged the Bulgarian authorities to rescue Buzludzha, a vast flying saucer-like monument, on a central Bulgarian mountainside. The monument is a brutalist concrete monument that was built to glorify communism nearly 40 years ago.  The 230-foot-high structure, made of 70,000 tonnes of concrete, 3,000 tonnes of reinforced steel and 40 tonnes of glass, looks like it is hovering at around 1,400 metres above sea level. It has a 40-metre-wide ceremonial hall and was covered from floor to ceiling in mosaics depicting the history of Bulgaria’s communist party. Europa Nostra listed it as one of the most endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2018.

U.S.-headquartered VMware, a subsidiary of Dell Technologies, announced plans to invest $2 billion in India over the next five years. The investment would enable VMware to expand to new offices in Bengaluru and Pune. The investment will increase headcount, invest in R&D and support growing sales operations in India.  India is a key cornerstone of our overall global investment strategy, providing outstanding engineering talent for our global R&D operations that are helping to drive innovation across our entire product portfolio.  VMware has also partnered with Women Who Code, India, to train 15,000 women over the next two years in diverse technology areas.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on released guidelines to facilitate payments among different mobile wallets, a move aimed at promoting digital transactions. The interoperability would be achieved in a phased manner such as interoperability of PPIs issued in the form of wallets through UPI, between wallets and bank accounts through UPI, and interoperability for PPIs issued in the form of cards through card networks. UPI is a payments system launched by the National Payments Corporation of India in August 2016. It facilitates instant fund transfer between two bank accounts on the mobile platform, without having to provide any detail of the beneficiary’s bank account.

Arundhati Bhattacharya, former chairman of State Bank of India (SBI), is appointed as additional director, designated as independent director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). RIL stated that Arundhati Bhattacharya is appointed for five years commencing October 17, 2018, subject to the approval of the shareholders. It also said wholly-owned arm Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings has bought 12.7% in SkyTran Inc., which develops technology in the field of Personal Rapid Transit Systems.

The Navy’s submarine rescue capabilities were boosted with the successful maiden trials of its newly inducted Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV). The DSRV is operated by a crew of three members. It can rescue 14 personnel from a disabled submarine at one time.  The Western Naval Command conducted the trials of the DSRV in Mumbai. It also set a record for "deepest submergence by a manned vessel" in the Indian waters.

According to the report, India has jumped five spots to become the 58th most competitive economy on the Global Competitiveness Index 2018 (GCI 4.0). India witnessed the largest gain among the G20 nations. The index covers 140 nations and it measures national competitiveness.  The United States ranked number one again with a score of 85.6. Federation, India, South Africa and Brazil respectively.  The Top 5 countries on the Index are: 1. US,  2. Singapore,  3. Germany,  4. Switzerland, and  5. Japan.

The MoUs were signed following India-Tanzania 9th Session of Joint Commission on Economic, Technical and Scientific Cooperation in New Delhi. They were signed in the presence of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Dr. Augustine Mahiga. The MoUs are signed between Foreign Service Institute of India and Centre for Foreign Relation, Tanzania and National Research Development Corporation and Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Corporation.

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D.Kumaraswamy announced the formation of the Kodagu Development Authority. The authority is to enable speedy reconstruction of the district, parts of which were ravaged by floods and landslips.  So far, the State government funded Rs.127 crore for the rehabilitation works in the district.  The objective of the interaction programme was to infuse confidence among the victims and elicit their views and expectations from the authorities. Mr.Kumaraswamy will visit the district again to review the rehabilitation.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is set for the proposed 510-km third and fourth rail line from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod to improve connectivity and operate more trains to the Kerala State. Kerala Railway Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) gave its approval for appointing Systra as the general consultant.  Systra, the Paris-based engineering and consulting group, has been appointed as general consultant for preparing the DPR, which includes the traffic study, initial design, and financial model. It also includes the internal rate of return for laying the line on a cost-sharing basis between Railways and the State through KRDCL.
